- TUDOR released 5 new watches in 2023 Watches & Wonders. I got my hands-on the latest BB36 in the blue dial (reference M79640-0002) and wanted to share my honest review with you all!

Funny that no one talks about the all new 39mm size in this line-up. This is it's first appearance! Before it was the 32mm, 36mm, and 41mm. Now it's 31, 36, 39, and 41mm. This means that for guys who wanted an alternative to the Explorer, but 36mm is too small, they can go up to this 39mm size. Of course they can go for the new Ranger as well but this is just another great option.

36 is good for smaller men but doesn't fit a lot of men.
Tudor improved on basically every single complaint I had about the old Black Bay 36 range. No bracelet micro adjustment, power reserve too low, case too thick. At that price, the new Black Bays seriously offer a close to unbeatable value. I agree with you that these new Black Bays are more akin to the Datejust than the Explorer. Maybe one small personal preference I have, is the lower dial text used to be rounded, and I preferred the rounded text as it had more character.
Sadly the smily face is gone, let's say thanks to the in house movement 😂

I wouldn't be surprised if Tudor eventually brings the smiley text back, I expect it to take a few years after their entire line has in-house movements. There needs to be ample time for them to dissociate from ETA movements. For now, I would have preferred the bottom text to be a touch higher to reduce the negative space..
The bracelet did have micro adjustment, just not tool-less. The case is thicker on the new ones. I like the new Black Bays but the jubilee makes it look like a wannabe Datejust. If it had a oyster bracelet and was closer to $3k I’d be interested. But with the jubilee and being nearly $4k is too much for me.
Love the new Tudor watches this year! Every aspect has been improved and I was lucky to pick up the BB54 today! Video coming soon...

Great vid, awesome size comparison. They look pretty close in size. I think this new Black Bay’s sibling is the Oyster Perpetual. The North Flag’s sibling is the new 40mm Explorer. Leaving the 36mm Explorer in its own.

I’m a huge fan of this, I have a 124270, so likely the 36 would appeal most, in blue. If they bring a green dial out then it’s definitely game over for me.
I am somehow not too sure how I would feel about a green sunburst dial on the BB, it would be an interesting look 👀
@@KCTimeShare time will tell, but the new black bay on jubilee is very close to the look of a DJ, and the green dial is great in my opinion, but so is the blue 😁
Petrol green which Nomos released together with polar blue on their Club Sport Neomatik a few months ago would be cool. No doubt they had an inkling brands would be releasing some version of these colors at this year's WaW. Ingenieur and Skydweller are a couple models that immediately come to mind.
I am wondering if with the update to the BB36 if they are moving it towards being more dressy because they will do a smaller Ranger to fill that 36mm-37mm sporty role. With the introduction of the BB54 at 37mm they have a new case that would work great for a Ranger in my mind. Similar to how they released the BB58 at 39mm and then released the 39mm Ranger later using the same case.
A very interesting observation. Maybe a Ranger comeback is incoming next year 😎
I got this in 41 and absolutely love it. The blue seems to look different in various forms of light it’s really awesome

Tudor bb36 new is the best 💙
The Black Bay 36 M79500-0007 is the only true frugal alternative to the Rolex Explorer 1 (m124270-0001) 36mm hands down! But now Tudor and Rolex decided a different route for it. The new BB36 and the other size variants are now more of the OP alternative. I am keeping my M79500-0007 But the BB34 is a good value proposition.

interesting to note that the new bb36 has 100m of water resistance as supposed to 150m of the previous model

Thanks for doing this comparison. The old BB36 was considered a bit of an Explorer alternative, and had that great lacquered/glossy dial. I had hoped for a 39mm variant with the same lacquered dial and Oyster with T-fit, but my hopes were dashed. This seems like a great watch on its own (I would wear the blue one in 39mm), but more dressy and like a Datejust alternative (without the date, which seems like an odd omission). It's such a shame, but I think the old model will become even more of a cult classic than it sort of was already.
I agree with you here Sean! Perhaps Tudor didn’t include a date on purpose here to make it less of a direct alternative to the DJ 🫣
The original BB36 (Blue) is more of a tool watch.
Brushed surfaces, matte dial, big utilitarian crown.
A solid little tank.

Still regret selling my og ETA BB36. Such a great watch. These look lovely but not fan of the sunburst dial.
I’m thinking about a DateJust but now I’m wondering why spend almost $6k more than this Tudor Black Bay on jubilee bracelet. I would like to possibly use as a dress watch. Same 5 yr warranty, in house movement. Seems like the only thing I’m paying for is the Rolex name at this point.

@@KCTimeShare agree, wait is way too long. Had the old bb36 in blue and loved it except for movement with low power reserve. This new superior movement fixes that. Need to check it out first on my wrist. See if it justifies the higher price.
Do you know if lug width is still 19mm before the taper?

The new BB36 has a very different style to the previous BB36. The new one is a lot less sporty. I like both but would get the new one if I can only choose one 😆

Hi KC, i agree with what you said about the new BB36. (disclaimer, I haven't seen the real thing yet)
But, I think I'm more disappointed with the new release. Perhaps I had too much expectations for the new release? I had been looking forward to the movement upgrade and T-fit clasp in the old BB36. But keeping that smooth dial. Although the new sunburst dial (especially the blue, man) does compliment greatly with the jubilee bracelet, additionally we can now experience the Jubilee at a lower price (no need to wait for that Datejust). But I already have a great Datejust alternative at hand, with the SPB259 Seiko Ginza Alpinist. And I feel like the new BB36 blue sunburst dial can never surpast the beauty of the SPB259 unfortunately. 🤔
And its seems weird that a "Datejust" alternative, doesn't have the date function. Therefore, although the new BB36 has all the features of a Datejust 36. In the end, it isn't a true alternative in my opinion.
With this change with Tudor's BB36. I feel like Tudor doesn't want it to clash with the Rolex OP 36. And points to all who want such alternatives (Explorer 1/OP alike) to just save up and wait for the OP 36. 😮💨

Hey, no stress man. Many are also comparing the new BB36 to the Datejust. I think is just us trying to justifying how much we still love it (and wanna buy it 😂).

i know a negative point: the lume is green, it just doesnt suit the more elegant bb36 anymore, they should have made it blue!

It's not the same dial silver wise, it's a tad more yellow. I would be interested to see it because I felt the previous version (the silver version you had) was too close to the colour of the steel case etc, that there wasn't enough contrast between the two. Hopefully the new version shows a bit better in that respect.
I think you might be right, Tudor official website does say 'Champagne' dial, though it looks very similar to the 'Silver' dial from before to my eyes. Granted I didn't have them side by side so I was recalling from my memory.

If I had to come up with one negative about the new BB36, it would be that Tudor changed the snowflake second hand to a lollipop.

Great video, and the blue is nice. I wish however the black dial did not was not gold gilt--looks too similar to the BB58. wish it were just classic black with white markers & hands.
I tend to agree with you here, Jim! Unfortunately, I couldn't check out the Black dial in person, hopefully I can see how it looks in real life soon and see if I can fully agree with you haha
Completely agree, wish the 54 was the same. Don't want every watch they release to be 'vintage' because of gilt on the markers or bezel. I very much doubt they'll ever do it though as it's too close to Rolex territory.

I like the new sunray dial but wish the blue was richer, like the heritage model. Needs more punch and a bigger contrast in the sunray effect.
That is actually something I've noticed too, the blue on my Rolex DJ is much richer than the blue used in the BB36!

It is very nice indeed!
Tudor will win much more ground if they make their cases thinner. My GMT 16710 3185 Z fits just perfect for me. Diameter, cases height, lug to lug wrist comfort. The Tudor GMT also caught me by its vintage appearance if not the thick case would disrupt the overall feeling. The new black bay burgundy "jubilee" moves towards a hot selling.
I think the new BB Red would be the hottest Tudor release out of everything we have seen so far this year!

With Tudor and Rolex you never should think about money. I give you an example. My first Rolex was an Oyster Perpetual. I bought it back in 1996 for 1400$ with a discount. Blue dial and the "oyster" bracelet. Imagine from this time on, you would have spend this amount of money buying either Rolex or Tudor each year!

Love this watch, especially with the blue dial. Comparison to Rolex datejust is strange, this one doesn't have a date! Tudor also seems to have just 1 MT caliber that is 3 hands with a date (MT5612). It only goes into their 41-42mm dive watches. I wonder if it can even fit into the BB 36mm.
Date aside, the whole vibe of the watch is very DateJust like don’t you think? I wonder if Tudor reserved the date function on certain models to protect the Rolex brother 🤔

The 2023 BB36 blue looks like a green-grey sort of blue rather than my preference which is a dark primary blue. That's my only criticism, but it's more of a preference than a criticism.

Me too, no date is ok for me. Price is a lot less not to mention getting hold of a DJ. Tudor has Rolex dna anyway being now made in a state of the art new factory in Switzerland.

Whats the difference in the tapering of the bracelet? Seens like the explorer / dj has a better tapering (15/16mm) instead of the new tudor (the old one tapers to 17/18)

It’s not an alternative to the DJ as it has no date and that’s a main reason somebody would buy the DJ. It’s more an alternative to an OP.

The 31 is a much better option to a lady Datejust.
Lady’s are more bothered about the branding than the watch though.
I want the BB41 Blue and it will be interesting to see how it compares to an OP41 Blue.
I do think it’s a shame Tudor have not done another Oyster Style for it, but maybe that will happen.
I also really wish Tudor would offer the Oyster bracelet option for this new BB line up, though the Jubilee style suits the sunburst dial more IMO~ Just my 2 cents!
Looking back, the Tudor Royal was a flop. The updated BB36 did not do anything to fix a sinking ship. The Black Bay Burgundy Bezel stopped the bleeding. The Black Bay 54 was a hit, a home run. It kept the brand alive, until 2024 when the BB56 GMT and BB Monocrome could arrive. Let’s see what happens in 2025…
The BB58 GMT and the Monochrome Metas BB are certainly a home run in my eyes!

Nope, the 2023 BB31/36/39/41 only comes in the Jubilee style bracelet. No official fabric/oyster option for this model I'm afraid.

Amazing watch, but why is no one talking about the price increases theses have been seeing? $2900 -> $3900 in 4 years! Not sure if they are worth it given that history.
Oh yes, the jump is huge. But the new model does have an in house movement with better power reserve, and the new bracelet and dial do look a bit more premium than the tool style from the old model. Price hike is expected but whether it is worth it or not is another matter.
Did you measure the actual thickness of the piece?

I think it is too similar to my OG BB58. But I still like the 58 more because the 54 is too monochromatic to my eyes 👀
Dials are what lets Tudors down. When they go for the faux vintage look many of the flaws are forgiven. But on a piece like this its easy to see Tudor is overpriced.

It is indeed high vs the older version, but I think it is still fairly priced all things considered. Yeh, the used market would offer great value in a couple of years I reckon.

New BB36 is just an OP/DJ mashup. Old BB36 character is gone, it’s no longer a sporty tool watch.

tried the BB 39 blue today at my Tudor AD ... almost perfect in every regard ... for me personally if it had a date it would've been perfect.. still the sun burst dial , change in case shape and Smaller Snowflake Hour hand made it much less "Diver Looking" compared to the Previous Version . this and the BB41 burgundy is definitely the highlights of this years tudor line-up . also tried the BB54 and found it too small.

The only one that wasn't was the one I went their for and that was the black black burgundy .. Ah well . Had more thought I think I'm going with the BB GMT . Just can't see myself being happy after a while with a watch with no date especially one that costs in the several thousands!

the loss of crown stem and snowflake seconds lume is such a loss of identity. between that and the jubilee, it just makes tudor seem even more like "rolex-at-home" :/

Completely agree. BB36 and the original Black Bay models have a lot of charm that is just simply missing from these new models, now it feels like they're just mostly riding with the snowflake hour hand. Going dressy with the BB36 line seems like a weird choice to me as well, IMO there's too much overlap with Royal now.
@@KCTimeShare it definitely has loads of good changes, it may be the "one watch" i'd recommend to someone at that price range for sure! and if it were present as a bb58 alternative when i purchased that, it would've been tempting. but unless it's at the upper end of one's budget as a grail, it feels harder to choose this watch as it's lost some of its niche "why"s.
i.e. "why" get this watch? "because i can't get a rolex." that's a totally respectable reason, it's just lame there aren't really aesthetic reasons on top of that anymore. i will say the light blue sunburst looks nice, especially with the milgauss's electric blue now out of the picture
@Bruce To your point, if I'm able to sell the Zed Bleu at a good price I might buy either the 36 or 39 to still have a blue watch with similar aesthetic in my collection and be happy with the extra cash.
I love the Milgauss but it wears top heavy due to the faraday cage and the green glass makes the dial less legible from some angles compared to other watches. Who knows, maybe it's because I'm partially colorblind.
@@marcheezy. i have the same issue with the milgauss, it's such a slab on the wrist that it ends up feeling very dated, which is not how something spiritually "sciency/techy" should feel. always felt its chunkiness was an unfortunate contrast to how smooth and sexy the curves on its case are.
it's definitely cool and unique, but the thing about novelties is they are eventually not so novel anymore.

I think polished + brushed suits the Jubilee style whereas fully brushed suits the oyster style. But that's just my personal preference 😬
I like the dot second hand, non smiley text on the new version but I hope they keep the old darker blue dial and offer an oyster bracelet option.
Interesting how you prefer the dot second hand. I thought the snowflake hands suits the hour hand better, but I do like the non-smiley text more! It would be great if Tudor can release an Oyster style bracelet option for users to chose from!

They should have kept it as an explorer competitor, they ruined it with the jubilee bracelet and lack of a solid black or white dial
The style has shifted, but whether it is for the better or not depends on people taste I guess?

It depends on stock level, some ADs which are still trying to shift the old stocks might still have them but for those who sold out the old stock, they will
no longer receive more.

also, why does the BB36 have a T fit clasp when the Explorer doesn't have that level of adjustment...
Oh yes, the BB36 does look more expenisve than the Explorer! But I guess the Explorer is not meant to look expensive? Regarding T-Fit, it is no excuse but I guess it is because the Explorer is an 'older' model.

Amazing how cheap the Tudor looks compared to the Explorer. Word of advice having owned both. Just go directly for the Explorer if you're considering a BB36/41. As soon as you own the BB you immediately start shopping for an Explorer.
That's interesting, after handling both in person, I don't think the Tudor feel cheap at all, but that's just my personal opinion.
@@KCTimeShare Yeah, I mean on it's own merit the black bay is an excellent piece. And it's very high quality.
But it's outclassed by the rolex in basically every way when you put them next to each other. As it should at the higher price. So as long as you never have them side by side you're good.
In my experience I’d probably skip the Explorer, keep the BB36 and cross my fingers that the new tfit clasp can be added to the old BB36 oyster. 😊
I owned a bb36 for3 years. Felt great on the wrist, quality bracelet with Rolex dna. Having owned OP and this one , for the money more than holds it own. OP has superior movement no doubt.
The Tudor just looks like a cheapened version of a Rolex. Oh yea, it’s is.

Tell me, why would Rolex make a Tudor with the same build quality as a Rolex and sell it for less than half the price.. They wouldn’t, and they don’t. The Tudor is a decent watch for the money. However, denying the fact that it is of lower build quality than Rolex is just ridiculous. Tudor was created for a reason.
