This was a fun comparison! Never really looked too closely at the BB36, but compared to the Explorer it looks like a heck of a value. Seems like fro the Explorer you're paying a lot extra to get that in house movement, which is a pretty big upgrade, but beyond that I'm assuming you're mostly paying for heritage and branding. Both are stunning, but oddly I think I like the look of the Tudor a bit better, despite normally not being a fan of the snow flake hour hand.

JUST THE WATCH IS IN THE HOUSE! I can’t believe you watch my videos! 😱❤️ you nailed it. “You’re paying for heritage and branding” YUP! 👏🏻 and with the explorer muddy heritage, it feels mostly like branding. 😜

It's mostly the accuracy difference or quality of the movement. Rolex is +/- 2 Sec, Tudor with SW200-1 or ETA2824 more like +/- 20 Sec - who knows exactly as they don't specify the grade of either movement. The Tudor current in-house base movement is much better now but dearer of course.

The Tudor. I went with the Tudor. I thought I’d love the Explorer based on Bark and Jack videos, but in person it just left me cold. I think there is too much text, and I don’t like Mercedes hands. Snowflake hands all day for me, perfect legibility. Mine keeps perfect time as well, several days after setting, it’s bang on the dot. Crazy accuracy. Only downside is the lack of easy adjustability on the Tudor clasp. BB36 for the win.
The 116000 silver dial with arabics, on the other hand, that watch is 🔥

I have the outgoing 39mm Exp 1, and while I have many more niche pieces, the Exp 1 is truly a masterpiece. And to be honest is worth the price. Also, the fact that everyone clamors over the subs and gmts and everything just make it so much more appealing to me. It’s a best kept secret. But I love the heritage of a piece and the history. So Rolex Exp 1 for me. (But I do love that Tudor tho lol)

    Here's my advice.
The Black Bay 36 (Blue Dial) is the way to go. And I'd say it's a better purchase than the Explorer.
    Here's why:
    1. It wears better on the wrist. The new (2021) 36mm Explorer is actually 35mm, and is quite dainty on the wrist. The Black Bay 36 has a better proportioned case and bracelet size.
    2. The Black Bay 26 has better lume. Yep, the luminescence on the Tudor is CRAZY. The legibility is perfect.
    3. If you get the blue dial, it will look black in most lighting, but wen the light hits it (especially sunlight), the blue pops. I call it a "Hamptons Blue", and it brings a whole new aesthetic dimension to the watch that the Explorer can't.
    4. The Black Bay 36 is thinner yet rated for a better water resistance, being 150m. The Explorer is only 100m.
    5. The Black Bay 36 movement is easier and cheaper to service,, and still runs on average +/- 2 seconds a day.
    6. The crown is set in an hardened aluminium tube, which provides it with extra protection. There are no crown guards here, but the crown is well protected.
    7. It's better value for money.

The Rolex is certainly not TWICE the watch the Tudor is, but it's still a far better, more sophisticated watch with perhaps the most perfect dial and case design ever conceived. So I would save up for the Rolex.
But what I want to know is why is it so difficult for people to find 17mm, 19mm, 21mm or 23mm straps, NATO or otherwise? You can instantly find DOZENS of them on eBay with just a simple search. The only problem I see is that people don't generally keep these sizes around at home, and are therefore forced to buy them. So it might be inconvenient, but they are NOT hard to find.

The choice for the word Explorer in the lower half of the 214270 mk2 is much better, I’d say. In the new 36 version it is far too busy in the upper half of the dial, also because of the font size: big letters Rolex, then small letters oyster perpetual followed by something in between for the word explorer. Looks like a sheet the eye doctor shows you when your eyesight is being checked. Strangely enough, the same text on the same place in all older 36mm-versions of the Explorer looks just fine to me. Also, the 39 mk2 fortunately has a matt black dial, rather than glossy. Apart from the mediocre 48h power reserve (and maybe the lack of AR-coating, but the absence of it also gives the dial a charming glance in certain lighting conditions), in my opinion the 214270 mk 2 is just perfect if your wrist is not too small.

explorer hands down. especially the new 36mm 2021 version featured in this video. every aspect of the watch has been refined from the previous 36mm explorer from ar coating, bracelet, movement and overall finish and quality. fantastic 1-watch watch.
Problem is how to get one at list.
Lets be brutally honest, everyone would choose the explorer of the two, but you would settle for the other due to lack of availability and higher cost.
If you choose the bb36, you'll never truly be satisfied as a 1-watch collection as long as you know the 124270 exists.

Although I've not tried on the new Explorer, even the bigger wearing BB36 was too small on my wrist. I can't see liking the even smaller Explorer. I did try on a pre-owned BB41 black and Explorer 39mm at the same shop a couple weeks ago, and while I didn't dislike the BB41, it did wear a bit thicker than the Explorer. Maybe it's the slab sides on the Tudor, but the 39mm Explorer was SO perfect on the wrist. It almost melted away. I'm still so upset that Rolex discontinued that size. I do wish Tudor would come out with a BB38 or 39. That 5mm gap is quite big when it comes to a watch. I totally get why the choice between them was so tough. If the Explorer wasn't quite so expensive, it might have been an easier choice, but they both are great in their own way. For fans of blue, that BB36/41 in blue doesn't is SO choice. Sadly, there isn't a blue Explorer. There was that smaller blue OP with 3/6/9 at one point, but that's gone now. Such a shame, as that was a hidden gem within the Rolex lineup. Nice comparison video, Gringa.

The explorer 1 hands down for me, the narrative & history of the explorer is a conversation starter (debatable). Have a 112470 in my collection and instinctively have the urge to wear it.
Yes, it does fly under the radar but the highly polished case/bezel and reflective sapphire glass draws attention.
Adrian from Bark & Jack is partly to blame for it.

The Tudor is a great watch at a decent price. (Though there are plenty of watches with much better specs at this price.) It looks great and if you love the design and size, you'll be plenty happy with it. It's also cheaper to service! With that said, to sum it up, the Rolex 124270 is superior in all these aspects:
    - made of 904L steel, more resistant to tarnishing and better polish
    - white gold hands and indices, resistant to corrosion basically forever
    - movement is highly superior in every way, anti-magnetic and anti-shock etc
    - excellent interior AR coating, Tudor lacks any AR coating...
    - on the fly micro-adjustment via easy link, generally more solid bracelet
    - more elegant case profile which mitigates the perceived thickness
    - better lume (appears white in more diverse lighting situations)
    - better crown appearance/positioning
Re: water resistance, let's be real. Neither are dive certified. Considering that, there's no difference between 100M and 150M WR. You can swim in either without worry, even more so with the Rolex due to 904L steel being resistant to saltwater corrosion. With all that in mind, I still think the Tudor is an excellent watch - it's just that the Rolex is also definitely worth the price increase! I'm tempted by the Tudor, but I think I'll just wait and save for the Explorer :)

Great vid as usual, but why would you make choose! Both are grails to me. Right now saving for the BB36. And maybe, just maybe after both my girls leave the nest, I’ll start saving for the Explorer. That said, to me these are two totally different watches, I mean, BB36 to me is sportier, while the Explorer is dressier, and both are good enough to be used casually. Anyway, maybe it’s just my fandom taking the best of me, but I love both watches, those are 2/3 of my ‘perfect 3 watch collection’. Keep up the great content. Nice to have Papi’s background participation, although missed the wrist check. Cheers to both of you guys.

Interesting question Gringa. Personally I would be happy with either watch subject to seeing the 36mm on my wrist that is. Both are similar size but they are quite different. The case of the Explorer is more sculpted but the Tudor more sporty as you mention. I think you summed it up perfectly with the Tudor being sporty with a smart edge and the Rolex being smart with a sporty edge. The Rolex being certified could be the deal maker though for those who demand mechanical accuracy.

The Black Bay 36 is more a statement of getting a GADA that is outside the box and a great value - esp. the older "Smile Dials". I think the Explorer is a watch you must really adore to pick up at the price point (AD, and esp. used) - otherwise picking it up seems more like a check the box or influencer induced buy.
    Great comparison video!!

I like both and I think the BB36 is awesomely priced (like pretty much every other Tudor). But the Explorer (in 36mm) is pretty much my favourite watch ever, because I feel you can do it everything with it. But I do think it is overpriced, even at retail. You say you would pay retail, and I would too (given the opportunity) because of the current Rolex situation. If we could look at it the same way we look at the Tudor, taking the watch and only the watch into consideration, we would consider it overpriced.
But If I was looking for a one-watch collection and was confortable with spending that kind of money to do it, the Explorer would be the one I'd get. But I'm not a one watch guy, I don't think I'll ever be and I am totally not confortable with spending that kid of money on a watch. I prefer to have various "budget" watches and keep changing between them (but "budget" is obviously subjective. I have around 10 watches and 500 is probably the most I'd spend in one, for now - and that is a lot of money for some people, not a lot to others). So..I'll just enjoy my various "budget" pieces and wear a Hamilton Khaki Field Auto 38mm the same way I would wear a BB36 or an Explorer.

At the time a 114270 was about 5K used ( cheap!) but I really felt that the 3K I paid for the brand new Tudor as opposed to a 15 year old Rolex just seemed a no brainer and I was lucky enough to have one that was so well regulated you'd have thought it was a Rolex. But.... in the end I sold it and was able to get a new 214270. So if I could snap my fingers and change the 39mm one I have into the new 36mm one...Yes I would, but that AD ain't havin' it

I’ll say Explorer cause I think it looks more refined and that dial from Tudor kinda looks awkward without the rotating bezel looks great on the 58 but the aesthetic looks a bit imbalance for me. Then again Adrian from Bark and Jack suggested to look at the two tone version and when he said “dirty”, the steel version became a bit dull in comparison. 😂

The thing is, in 5 years time my Explorer will still be worth £5k, if not more, but the Tudor will only be worth £1k, if not less. That is the equation ever person looking to buy one of these watches will have to solve. The clever thing to do is buy both watches. Best of both worlds.

  • @Milofchg

I own the Rolex Explorer 2021 36mm. I'll say get the Rolex ONLY at an AD because it's cheaper than a used 39mm and the old 36mm version from 1990-2010. It has a 70 hour power reserve. Although it's only 100 meters water resistance, it has white gold, and adjustable links. Plus it's a Rolex. I held back from buying the Tudor because I know for me it would be a compromise watch. I will always want the Rolex. I will end up buying the Tudor BB 36 because it looks amazing, it's affordable, I prefer 36mm watches, and you can find it at any AD. The other reason I held back on getting a used Explorer 36mm is the clasp and bracelet. It feels cheap and for a watch that was $4k last year, now selling at $7k for a 11-30 year old watch? C'mon.... Then with the Rolex shortage games I couldn't get the 39mm Explorer or a Sub for several years on a waitlist. I was blessed to get this one thanks to my AD rep who knew I wanted an Explorer for many years.
