    While transposing on sight (sight transposing) is not something you'll encounter in, say, big band music, it's a very valuable skill and often mandatory at the professional level.

    I always hear about playing stuff in all keys but for me, the ability that is making me improve a lot is trying to transcribe "as fast as i can". It makes me more and more concious about keys, grades... good video

    Your kids are growing up so fast! Thanks for “vlogging” them. LOL Hats off to you for sight transposing. It is a challenging skill. Although looking up a whole step or down a minor third is not too,too bad, but STILL. I wouldn’t mind a few local gig outside my classical stuff, but I’m not going total pro, so ONE LESS THING! 😂 I love watching your practice/learning process. Thank you for sharing how you think and work. Sooooooo helpful! Keep on being a great husband and father. So glad you plan time to spend with the family. That is the most important thing in life. ❤

    Transposing was something I really worked on a lot during my undergrad, a buddy of mine who was a graduate student at the time who had gone to Berklee got me working on it. As an alto player primarily , I’ve developed a pretty strong ability to transpose from C to Eb instruments, but I had a gig recently where I was asked to play tenor, and I was given concert pitch sheet music, and even though it’s probably considered by most to be an “easier” transposition, since I wasn’t as used to it, I had to think pretty hard on the gig haha!

    Hardest thing for me when it comes to sight transposition is dealing with complex key signatures or when there are lots of accidentals

    Bob, great video! Love your perspective and some of the challenges that happen along the way. It is encouraging and thought some of those struggles on the horn were unique to me. Were you playing a transcription at marker 5'30" or just improvising? Sounded good. Thanks! Tim

    You're right, it's confusing when there's a mix of charts in Bb and concert keys! It's hard to turn your "auto transpose" off on those gigs.

      @@bobreynolds True. I used the Selmer for years, mainly for louder gigs. But lately I’ve been working with my older Link lig (“T” model), and they are great if you like a really loose lig, and it encourages me to relax.

    Then transposing from Eb the transposing Bb charts to Eb and Eb charts to Bb then do it on a clarinet the work with singers who change keys all the time. Ugh 😩

  • @jorymil
    @jorymil หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Oh man. It happens all the time to trombone players. "Sorry, I thought you played the same part as the tenor sax." "Oh. We just have an alto part." "The singer wants to play this a minor 3rd up." As for concert-key stuff, gotta read both bass and treble clefs. Growing up, the fake books were often only in concert-key treble clef, so it was easiest just to learn to read it straight up. So... young Skywalker: get fake books in different parts, and practice all of them. But if you have to take them to the gig, only take one type: no sense in making your life hard intentionally. I'm not even a pro, but an adult amateur who played in college and still plays around town. So I'd call it a "real-life" skill, rather than a "pro-level" skill. Full-time pro trombonists are about as rare as pro ventriloquists.
