  • Thought i would spend my saturday tinkering with the power steering belts to see if i could get the squealing to stop and to figure out why i'm getting no power from it.
    Thanks for watching.

    As always, you're videos are my 'go to' channel for things like this. My power steering was chattering for a while, last night it started leaking fluid (running fluid really) now starts the job of troubleshooting and likely more to come... as always seems to be the case with our P30 motorhomes! Never a dull moment!! Be safe Nathan!

    Not sure about yours but that pump you were working on is the ac pump !
    Power steering is below that and much harder to get to !
    Looks to me like you tightened your ac pump belt. There are three separate belts . Alternator/fan that runs to your crank pulley. Then your power steering belt , next is your AC belt .
    The diesel sounds like timing with the hard start , but if you start it up for a few and don’t kick down the choke or high idle , it’s going to diesel

    Omg this just happened to me. It s making that noise when i turn it to the end ,left and right.
    NOW I CAN'T EVEN TURN IT. I WILL TRY TO TIGHTEN BELTS AND COME BACK to see what progress you made.

    The dieseling is a timing plus the idle speed adjustment on the carb. I had to replace my carb as the previous owner attempted to adjust the idle mixture setting. In doing so he ran the idle mixture jet screws in HARD to the point of cracking the base plate of the carb. This resulted in no matter the setting the idle could never be adjusted lower than 1800 rpm. and would diesel on shut down.
    As to the hard start after running that is "heat soaking" this is a common problem with ANY of the GM's or Chevy's with the Big Block V8 engines. What happens is because the starter is so close to the exhaust manifold, about 1 1/2" away, the copper windings in the starter increase in resistance when they get hot and must wait sometimes for 15 -30 minutes to cool enough for proper operation. Also the main power cable from the battery suffers "heat soaking" too.
    Correction is to add a starter shield, also the power cable to the starter should be 4 guage and heat shielded with in a 1" tube as the cable runs under the manifold to the starter. There is also a heat deflector shield for the right side of the engine that blows airs down the right side of the engine to assist in removing heat.
    Hope this helps.

      Because it was a problem with hot start I think you are right about starter getting heated. When it bogs on cold start I would check timing...could be too advanced.

      Or even a flat spot in cam, or a cracked valve, had similar issues, allowed manifold vapors to seep past the week cylinders on mine, messed with timing for a week before doing leak down and compression check...

    I have the same problem on my '86 Fleetwood PaceArrow it is on a P30 chassis with a 454 or 7.4L V8 engine. Along with the pump running the power steering it also runs the power assist for the power brake system. You will also notice soft or spongy brakes where you need to pump a time or two to get them to fully work.

      @@chrisbaker4475 I had the same problem. Mine would not turn at all. It ended up being a bad hydroboost. It was actually pretty easy to do. Once the shield is removed there is plenty of room to do the job.
      Remove the left wheel and the shield that is mounted to the frame. Once the shield was removed I removed the lines and hoses to both the hydroboost and master brake. Remove the master brake cylinder from the hydroboost. Remove the bolts that support the hydroboost and remove the hydroboost bracket, the hydroboost.

    Sounds like he's tiring box is gone . It's not a bad fix just make sure your wheels are seat along with your steering wheel. The hard start is defamatory a tuneup and timing issue but I would also save up and convert it to fuel injection wither one of the numerous kits online from holly and such company's. I did my rev and it started the first time every time and my gas Mileage went way up and payed for itself in 2 years

    MAY WANT TO GET SOME AIR IN THOSE TIRES AND MOVE THE COACH SO THOSE TIRES ARENT SITTING IN THE SAME SPOT. TIRES THAT ARE LOW ARE MUCH HARDER TO TURN. A GOOD TUNE UP PLUGS PLUG WIRES AIR FILTER AND SOME GOOD HIGH TEST GAS. DID YOU ADD ANY FUEL STABILIZER WHEN YOU PARKED IT?

    @michaelschmidt7014 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nathan, were you able to get the power steering / hydro-boost pump belt tightened? How did you do it? I was thinking from below by removing the bottom section of the fan shroud which gives access to the lower front of the engine. Any thoughts?

    My girlfriend and i fulltime RV, we just upgraded from a small 78 dodge minnie Winnie to a 33ft coronado (p30 chassis) ive only driven it once due to the power steering AND brakes not working properly. I believe its going to be the hydroboost in mine, the guy we got it from saod it jad a new power steering pump installed at one point but didnt fix the issue, any idea how hard it is to replace the hydroboost in a class a? I cant even see the thing from in the hood

    • @lisah6451
      @lisah6451 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just got done replacing my hydroboost. It was actually very easy. Remove the left wheel then remove the shield. Once you have the shield removed it is easy to get to the hydroboost. You have to remove the master brake cylinder off with the hydroboost.
      I actually found it easier to leave the hydroboost mounted to the bracket and remove the hydroboost, the bracket and the master brake all in one piece.

    I have an 87 Winn that looks exactly as your RV. Stupid question - Where do you put in the fluid for brakes and steering? Just bought RV and trying to do some maintenance. Any advice would be great. Thank you!!

    • @ClassALiving
      @ClassALiving  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The brake fluid goes in the brake reservoir which is located in the drivers wheel-well behind a shield that has a square hole cut in it so you can access it. I have also read some of these motorhomes come with a small hatch on the floor near the driver's seat so you can get to it easier, mine unfortunately does not making it a little difficult to get to but you can still do it.
      The power steering reservoir is under the hood, it is black and cylindrical and has a little cap on the top

    • @teresaklahn4127

      I thought I found for the steering but it only states to use proper fluids and not to over fill.Didn't want to risk putting in the wrong stuff.

    You have to check the fluid levels as well ( you probably already have) power steering uses fluid to assist in ease of turning(if you will). check your hoses too ,, a supply line or pressure hose is about 20 bucks. the return line is cheap as well, one could be split or leaking.

    Use a vacuum pump tester to check and apply vacuum to rid air pockets in pump via reservoir. Air in steering pump causes cavitation of centrifical force causing sharp whining sounds.

      @@ClassALiving The belt may need more tightening since it might be slipping silently at the new tension. Maybe see if it gets hot. It may be designed to be stiff when sitting still on dry pavement, which is the hardest condition, and an ageing pump might want a thick fluid additive, especially if it behaves better when cold. Lucas makes them.

  • @gideonram4607
    @gideonram4607 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Didn’t check power steering fluid. Why not? Cavitation in power steering pump is caused by air getting in. Replace seals at pitman arm if pump won’t hold steering fluid. Check pully for excess play if so replace pump. Hard start after warmed check ground connection. Make sure both battery connections are corrosion free.
