I love this medley simply because I love hearing McCartney sing! That has always been one of the major aspects of his music that I liked the most his singing.
@@garyarnett1220 Totally agree. However, I would not underestimate the band contribution, like, background vocals, instrumental arrangement, general production, which make these song absolutely amazing. Thanks!
Many things to say here! The keyboard instruments that takes the solo during Power Cut is a celeste, the same instrument used on The Beatles' Baby It's You ten years prior. Talking about 1963, it's noteworthy to say that Hold Me Tight is the only title used twice on officially releases by Paul (One with The Beatles and one with Wings ten years after). There's another title, Somedays, used twice by Paul: On his 1997 album Flaming Pie and on one of his first compositions, recorded with The Silver Beatles in his house in spring of 1960 (Found on the same tape of the officially released 1960 home recordings on The Beatles' Anthology 1), but this song was never officially released (Even though you can easily find it online and even on TH-cam). Talking about Hold Me Tight, I totally love its almost endless modulation during the choruses and its changes in beat. Another part of this medley that I love is Hands Of Love: I adore Paul's and Linda's harmonies. A very brisk acoustic rhythm. The icing of the cake is the big ending of Power Cut: After the coda of the song is set, the orchestra comes in and Paul starts to ad lib on top of the group vocals, at 10:38 the electric guitar starts to reintroduce snippets of melodies from the three previous parts of the medley: First Lazy Dinamite, then Hands Of Love and Hold Me Tight. After presenting the little nods to the previous sections singularly, the three guitar lines are played stacked of top of each other, while the "Baby I love you so" vocals of Power Cut reprise, giving us an incredible finale when parts of all four songs are played simultaneously. A very fitting way to end this medley! Talking of which: Yes, it was conceived from ideas of four different unfinished songs, the same way that Paul and John patched together their unfinished sketches on Abbey Road
Length of each song... "Hold Me Tight" 2:22 - "Lazy Dynamite" 2:50 - "Hands of Love" 2:14 - "Power Cut" 3:46 (11:12 total) A friend I grew up with, who now lives in New York , loved this medley. He picked the medley as his favorite part of this album. I don't think many agree with him. Paul wrote a song titled "Hold Me" tight for The Beatles in 1963... then ten years later wrote another one for this LP. I think the line that runs through all 4 songs is that they are all short (perhaps unfinished) little songs about love. They are sort of sweet little love ditties. Queen's first LP came out in July of 1973 - but their first hit record was in 1974. RRS came out in April of 1973. The backing vocals are all very nice in these tracks (Linda shines). When I first heard that little piano solo (you mention at 14:13) (played at 9:17 in the video) I thought Paul was playing a toy piano. QUESTION for anyone reading this... Which of these 4 songs is your favorite? I think mine is "Hands of Love". I like the instrumental part at the end of the medley where they intermix all of the songs (at 10:37 in the video).
I love love love that Beatles song “Hold Me Tight”. I’ve done it a few times with Beatle bands. Especially those shows where we play at a pub for 3-4 hours and start busting out the deep cuts. Songs like Kansas City, Mr postman and hold me tight start flying around 😂
I love "Power Cut", especially because at the end, if you keep singing the chorus all through the guitar lines intermixing the 4 songs, it all fits perfectly and you can see here the connection between all of them.
I always thought that Paul wrote “Hold Me Tight” for the purpose of teaching Linda the ‘circle of fifths’. It pretty much goes thru it, chord-wise. Even tho she didn’t play piano on it, she was going to be Paul’s touring keyboardist - and she had some work to do 😘
A few months before Red Rose Speedway, Paul released an excellent non-album single with two of my favorites from this period. "Hi, Hi, Hi" and "C Moon". I've heard "Hi Hi Hi" live from Wings Over America on your channel, but for me the studio version rocks harder. And "C Moon" with a reggae beat is a gas.
C Moon (ie a circle - think of the shapes) was PM's response to being carred a "square". Hi Hi Hi was banned by the BBC as it references drugs. This was after Give Ireland was similarly banned. PM responded by recording Mary Had A Little Lamb - effectively a raised middle finger - ban that, you b@st@rds! Gotta love PM's sense of humour!
Well, it's no With the Beatles, but the modulations in Hold Me Tight were interesting. This was much better than I'd been led to believe. I actually thought that the first three songs bled together reasonably well, but the transition to Power Cut was abrupt. Is Hands of Love about what I think it's about? Okay... hein. I think that was my favourite segment anyway.
After this very good album, if you move forward comes Wings 2 greatest albums. (Did you notice that at the end of the medley they reprised the tunes from all 4 sections?)
@@stevefreary7449 More chaos than creation. And even the chaos is boring. Looks like Linda was his muse and he lost his mojo after she had passed. Or maybe McCartney 3.0 is less talented than versions 1.0 and 2.0. Take care.
@@dalebonifant4855 Thanks. I agree with "to each his own". I am totally just expressing my opinion here. Not imposing it on anyone. Not quite sure what 1st Gen is. 1st Gen is "I was right in front of the TV for the Sullivan shows in 1964".
"Hands of Love" is eerily similar to "Turning Japanese" with a similar meaning. Ewwww.
