As a former SF Native + 6 years in NYC I've had similar experiences. For those unfamiliar, many parts of SF were modeled after NYC. Central & Golden Gate Parks for example. It also helps when 3/4 of the city burns down so u can start from scratch (1906 earthquake).
The Homeless problem stems back to Reagan Era as CA Gov. The problem has been exacerbated over 4 decades for multiple reasons. It isn't just 1 reason.
I would also say NYC volume+density allows for a more impromptu social life, whereas SF social life is more structured, however SF events are more diverse whereas a LARGE chunk of NYC social life surrounds the bar culture.
Also, I've found its not fair to compare just SF (1 city/county) to NYC (5 city size boroughs, 5 separate counties). Rather you need to include the Greater SF Bay as a comparison.

    • @chriscolumbia9579

And much of New York is modeled after San Francisco, like no smoking in bars. Where California goes, others follow.

I live in NYC and have visited SF quite a few times. I think SF is better overall quality of life wise but it certainly has plenty of well known problems that I hope can be resolved instead of getting worse. NYC is fun for a few years but expect you'll feel like many others at some point and feel like the negatives don't justify the positives anymore. Also, important for people to remember there is not really that great of a city in all ways in the US and what matters in a city will vary so much by your situation. Single and in a white collar non-tech job, NYC may be better. Single and in a tech job, SF may be better. Married and not in a white collar job (or independently or familial wealthy) or love hot weather all year, both are bad choices. Love broadway and theatre, obviously NYC is better. Prefer being outdoors more, hiking, etc, SF (the entire bay area and really CA as a whole) is better.

I wish there was a little bit more emphasis on living in SF (the city) & Silicon Valley (Bay Area).I do think the city is a great place to walk around, all the neighborhoods in the city are close together so it’s definitely a walking city versus Silicon Valley which is quite suburban . I think I mention this in the video that although I live in silicon valley I visit SF quite often (before corona virus) and I have lots of friends and co-workers who live in SF or work in SF so I think I have a good idea of the differences. Also NYC itself is a pretty broad term but I was focused more on Manhattan. Of course there are micro cultures with each neighborhood even in NYC so these are just more broad observations.

NYC skyline was breath taking and NYC was full of things to do. I would sit at the hotel bar in NYC and boom I’m headed to a bar/club with tons of new friends . Both had homeless but the homeless in nyc kinda just sat off to the side… the homeless in SF were super aggressive. SF stinks like really bad, I was in Union square and even inside the restaurant it just smells like shit
ironic enough the people in NYC were super friendly, in SF I was given terrible service, folks seemed super awkward idk maybe it’s the tech personality. I’m going to visit both cities again before I make my decision but overall was super disappointed with SF….. sidenote I had a great time in Oakland

Few reasons why SF will come on top:
    1) if you want to buy a property in an upcoming area today (2021) your ROI will be MUCH greater than in NYC
    2) weather in SF is all around even and good
    3) live the city life and settle and raise your kids in the peninsula
    4) life here is all about nature and as far as nature goes …. NYC doesn’t even come close to it. It’s incredibly beautiful
    NYC:
    1) there is just endless things to do… you will always have a new spots to go to.
    2) in SF you have two options and if they fail…. Your next destination is home
NYC is maxed out on what it can do to bring the city to a whole new level…. It’s at its peak…. SF has a lot of room and currently a lot of BIG and upcoming projects … so if you want to invest you’ll def win.

Way more homeless in NYC, and they are aggressive and violent. SF is chill.

Why the hell are you comparing a small city that’s declining and isn’t even famous and has like one land mark, to a world wide metropolis with a billion land marks and with a fast growing population. Should’ve been LA instead of SF

it's because these were two areas that I lived in so I had a better idea of comparing the two. plus, when I was in New York a lot of people said SF was similar, not LA, which is more de-centralized and spread out.

San Francisco is a world class city. It can keep up with the big boys. Not sure where you get your information from.

SF is bigger than many people seem to think but yes, it's not as population dense and high population as NYC but LA is even less dense. It just technically has more people in the metro area but that means very little as most people are not going to commute more than an hour for friends or date and it can take several hours to go from one end of the LA metro area to the other. Realistically, you can more easily meet up with more people living in SF than in LA. The cities closest to NYC in density and appearance are Chicago and Philly and they make better comparison than LA. LA does rival NYC in pop cultural influence, SF doesn't really have much influence in that regard unless you include tech stuff and games.

Disagree. San Diego is worse than sf, unless you prefer warmer weather and less rain.
