Fun fact: The book series this movie is based on actually predates Divergent as well as The Hunger Games! It is looked at as one of the early YA dystopian books that helped stir up interest in the genre that lead to the huge number of them in the late 2000s/early 2010s (along with books like The Giver and Feed that came even earlier than Uglies). I honestly never thought this series would get adapted just because it has been so long and films based on YA dystopian books have kind of fallen out of fashion, but it will be so cool to see it finally adapted to the screen almost 20 years after the book was published!
@@ogurasyn2354from my memory, this series was definitely not better than the hunger games, but was better than divergent. it has been well over a decade since I re-read them though
@@ogurasyn2354 It isn't better or worse, the books just laid the groundwork for what came after. I'm excited to see the ways the creators may change the source material from the book to the film based around how later YA books (and the film adaptions of those books) approached ideas they have in common. I personally find it interesting that the books came before but now the film adaption will have to be built with content that was created after in mind since most viewers will naturally compare the Uglies film to popular dystopian YA content like Divergent and Hunger Games.
It's the fact that they talked about making this a movie back in 2007-2008 when I was a freshman in high school and here it is 15 years later on Netflix. It's definitely found it's platform, way to go Scott Westerfield.
I literally just stumbled on my old copies of these books yesterday... was not expecting to see a live-action trailer today 😅 Uglies is one of the first YA dystopian series I ever read, and I definitely recommend it to any curious newcomers!
Netflix currently has this available in New Zealand as a New Release, and I LOVE IT!! Hopefully they make the part 2 movie to find out what happens to Tally since she's now perfect and if the smoke gang can change things. I rate the movie 10/10, Excellent.
That's how it started, before they could surgery, models and celebs were prettiest of normal ppl then their cultures science evolved, sure they could surpass models and more ppl could look pretty for a price. But more do surgery more abnormal body was with all the medical gunk
yeah but from my vague memory of the books when they turn in to pretties dont they have their brains altered? so their perception of appearances is most likely due to the brainwashing they go through during the surgery. The ones who should have the most drastic and uncanny appearance is the specials
@@tete-rh5xoyes, the whole point of the surgery is weaponizing people’s need to be “pretty” so their brains can be altered and render them docile and useless until they are old enough for whatever purpose they are assigned to the society. They receive another surgery then as adults to change them again, however they need to, to best benefit their assigned role in society.
A lot of you, even though you have read the books have missed the meaning completely. The message in the beginning of the movie explained it all. Go back and watch the very beginning. It's about how society determines our worth through various different means, including cultures and labels.
ok.. doesn't make it a bad movie, horrible CGI where it times looks like a bad video game cut scene. I'm guessing in this planet gravity doesn't exist. Movie jumped the shark
Y’all need to READ THE BOOKS FIRST BEFORE Y’all “JUDGE a book BY it’s COVER” literally this book series was out before Divergent and Hunger Games books. And this is what’s happening now as we speak. Just with the Uglies book series by Scott Westerfeld itself the Actual Certified Classic✨🤧

I literally just screamed when I heard "Tally, time to wake up".... Cause ain't no way I thought this would have been adapted. I read all the books in this series and I'm so excited right now
The Twlight Zone episode "Number 12 Looks Just Like You" from 1964 has a lot of resemblance to this one and the novel it's based on. If you have the chance, check it out, or maybe you already did.

Yeah, it looks very okay, like competent, but not exactly inspiring. I'm afraid when it drops it's going to be immediately dismissed as another generic sci fi dystopia, which is a shame as the book was really interesting.

In the book, everyone was considered "ugly" until they had the super-secret operation that turned them "pretty." So people who just looked normal were considered "ugly."

Love how people point out something from a novel about 15 years ago but miss the fact there was a twilight zone episode from 60 years ago with the same general concept that once you reached a certain age you got to be "pretty" and look like everyone else.
Its a great series.. read all the books if I didn't tbh I wouldn't be interested by this trailer and would have a bunch of questions but seriously check it out if you haven't read the books hopefully it lives up to the novels
my first thought is why isn't something like this in theatres I'm so stoked to have a film along the lines of divergent, back. i miss getting excited to see movies like this on the big screen... regardless of how well it does.
Everyone is mad about Joey King being casted as Tally but as someone who read the books, I think she’s the perfect cast. She looks just like I imagined Tally
Maybe it's because she's actually too pretty because the books overexagerate but certain features on tally stand out like her asymmetry with her face but do you know in reality normal ppl don't have perfect ratio faces but it's so slight ppl miss it and still compare who's prettier? But Hollywood makes ppl appear too pretty. If they make the cast pretty as a base rule, what do pretties look like. It's all about perspective from story teller. Like hunger games, maybe Lawrence is a good actress but.... In book catnis wasn't pretty
My Girls by Animal Collective teleports me back to such a specific Tumblr-era time, that was a good call for the trailer to pull on the nostalgia heart-strings
well is netflix they can adapt anything because they don't need movie theaters. The teen era is done because many start to flop in box office. Ugly will be safe if have enough views

There was also a revival of the series starting with _Imposters,_ all set in the same world but collectively it's the _Imposters_ Series. _Imposters, Shatter City, Mirror's Edge,_ and _Youngbloods._ Additionally there's an "Insider's Guide" companion book, and two graphic novels from Shay's point of view, _Shay's Story_ and _Cutters._

I can't believe they are finally adapting this series. I did my 8th grade book report on this series. LMFAO

middle school me never thought she’d see this day. it’s been YEARS! i’m excited for this adaptation. time to reread the books!!!!
The Divergent vibes are strong with this one
Fun fact: The book series this movie is based on actually predates Divergent as well as The Hunger Games! It is looked at as one of the early YA dystopian books that helped stir up interest in the genre that lead to the huge number of them in the late 2000s/early 2010s (along with books like The Giver and Feed that came even earlier than Uglies). I honestly never thought this series would get adapted just because it has been so long and films based on YA dystopian books have kind of fallen out of fashion, but it will be so cool to see it finally adapted to the screen almost 20 years after the book was published!
@@kathleencarroll5645So they did things first. Did they make them better? Series will tell
This is the series that inspired Divergent!
It's the fact that they talked about making this a movie back in 2007-2008 when I was a freshman in high school and here it is 15 years later on Netflix. It's definitely found it's platform, way to go Scott Westerfield.
Now we just need to convince them to make the Midnighters Trilogy into a series! All of Scott's work deserves screen time!
I bet the author was inspired by South Koreans and Kpop
My jaw dropped when I saw the trailer name. This book series was incredible and underrated ! It's finally going to get the adaptation it deserves

”Shatter me”
I literally just stumbled on my old copies of these books yesterday... was not expecting to see a live-action trailer today 😅 Uglies is one of the first YA dystopian series I ever read, and I definitely recommend it to any curious newcomers!
Netflix currently has this available in New Zealand as a New Release, and I LOVE IT!! Hopefully they make the part 2 movie to find out what happens to Tally since she's now perfect and if the smoke gang can change things. I rate the movie 10/10, Excellent.
I read this series over and over in middle school and when shays story came out I screamed cause she was so underrated, I’m so excited for this!!!!
tally lowkey did her dirty in the books, i hope we get to see shays character properly developed here
You screamed ? Sure
They should have made the pretties way more drastic, i remember reading the book and being shook at how she finds models and celebrities to be Uglies.
That's how it started, before they could surgery, models and celebs were prettiest of normal ppl then their cultures science evolved, sure they could surpass models and more ppl could look pretty for a price. But more do surgery more abnormal body was with all the medical gunk
Why would they do the 2rd one first that makes no sense
I agree !
yeah but from my vague memory of the books when they turn in to pretties dont they have their brains altered? so their perception of appearances is most likely due to the brainwashing they go through during the surgery.
Read this series in high-school. In the 2000's. It's been years. Can't wait for the movie adaptation

I like how the "Uglies" are all attractive. I'm going to assume ugly is extremely subjective here and pretty is basically AI Art-Ken/Barbie doll.
Yeah... to be Pretty in the first book you will be given surgery to achieve a certain height, body mass distribution, perfect skin, perfectly symmetrical face, perfect teeth, perfect eyesight, etc.

They won't, Scott westerfeld had brilliant ideas. Of course sidelined to social commentary on looks. But.... It's only going to focus on this one

While I'm not super surprised Uglies is getting an adaptation they have a hell of a job doing it well in live action (ngl the trailer doesn't give me all that much hope). Also hope they stick with it and do Pretties and Specials since the story gets really complex/nuanced in the later books
Yeah, it looks very okay, like competent, but not exactly inspiring. I'm afraid when it drops it's going to be immediately dismissed as another generic sci fi dystopia, which is a shame as the book was really interesting.
I just hope they actually get the point of the books across and not just gloss over the social commentary, and the FL character development
Yeah I wonder how they handle the other books to come… I hope it continues
I know, right? This trailer makes me think the movie is going to be a lot different from the books.

right!? I pictured her almost exactly like this, I did picture Shay a bit different but I like her still! I am soooooo excited for this!!!
In book catnis wasn't pretty
its not because of the way she looks its because she sucks at acting
no bc shes absolutely perfect.
