The first song... "Office of Hearts" BEFORE office of Hearts existed! Which is what's great about Bob's songs... Same great melodies, sometimes ENTIRELY different songs lyrically.... AND RELEASED. 👏🏻
Agreed. I absolutely love his jumps and over all guitar / bass stage swagger all the while with a Marlboro 100 dart on board for the entire show. MM is an indie honey badger & doesn’t give a sh*t!
I love when song ideas appear many years apart from when they were written. Bob simultaneously revisits old and creates new material. A truly gifted melody writer.
Had the privilege of Payton Earick ("Peyton Eric") screening this show for me a couple years before it was considered for DVD release. The beginning of the VHS tape was damaged, resulting in the first two songs of their set being dropped from the DVD. I'd seen this version of the band at Canal Street Tavern the same year as this show, but seeing that tape completely refreshed my fuzzy memory! For the record, this vid was shot by the local cable access company, not a home video, as mentioned in the post description. Also, you can catch a fair number of live mid-'90s GbV clips on my channel.
Hey, thank you for the corrections! You'll have to forgive my 'home video' line, I wrote this description after about three pilsner's. It's so cool that you got to see this iteration of the band in thee flesch. I relish my opportunity to enjoy a facsimile of it at home. It's a document on-par with Games For May-era Floyd for me. Yes, your channel's clips have overseen many-an apartment gathering of mine!
It's so awesome to see Bob at this early stage. The passion and drive were there from the beginning, although he hadn't found his signature sound yet. Even watching this early footage, you can tell he was destined for greatness.
Wish I had known about them at this time!! I was 16 and just bought my first car a week before this show. lolol I certainly would have made that road trip with my friends.
Two things I love eternally about GBV 1) The songs 2) The fact that a band who have their roots as a Midwestern dad-rock hobby band (see the vid above) also went on to become one of the most important indie groups of their generation AND the next one.
wonderful to see this finally! what really strikes me is, even though this is so early, it's a GBV show like many after, the great songs (and there are many classic early GBV songs played here), Bob's sense of humour and banter.... Ruby Tuesday sung by Bob is really something too....
Hell yeah, but I’m sure we all agree as far a stage presence goes, he’s more bananas when he’s on guitar with his faded yellow Gibson hollow body. Physics: bass = larger + more rhythm section based. He’s right in there with Townsend, Prince, Slash. However, my #1 and #2 picks is a dogfight between Jimi and Jimmy Page.
@@gowiththeflow1476 Well you can't go wrong with any of those guitarists that you named but of course for Guided By Voices I prefer Mitch Mitchell on guitar, it doesn’t get any better than 'Propeller' through 'Under The Bushes Under The Stars' era Mitch Mitchell.
@@EdFredHernandez you’re right about Propeller & UTBUTS albums and that era. Under the Bushes was my first intro to GBV. I was blown away! Every single song on it was incredible. I do love Mitch’s whole persona and guitar chops. From the stage energy, gnarly hair and chain smoking while rocking is tough to beat. My first show was 2001 Knoxville, TN. I-Drills tour (also a great release and good songs). 30+ shows later I got to hang backstage during sound checks or whatever. Drinking from their cooler with my friend Brad Brock (He’s friends with Bob and the most dedicated GBV fan I’ve ever known). Brad, even got me a copy of Isolation Drills a month before it was released! Anyway, I always enjoyed seeing and hanging out with DG. If Bob is El Capitan, then I’d say DG definitely would be 4 star general. That said, I say for me that it is almost too close to call. I am going to give DG an extra .5 point because of his prowess and pulling great background vocals. Take care man & thx for the comment. “Long live Rock-a-thon… for the dreams of the weed king, we all sing!” I am going to pull up and listen to “Jellyfish Detector”now.
@@gowiththeflow1476 "Freedom cake! Quick to bake!"... Wow Man sounds like you've had some amazing experiences seeing shows and getting to go backstage with your friend. My only GBV show was a great show it was 2012 on their "classic lineup" reunion tour in San Francisco at the Warfield. Mitch Mitchell was in fine form, there was a roadie who would come and put a new cigarette in his mouth every once in a while. Everybody sounded great, Toby, Greg Demos on bass, Kevin Fennell on drums. It's funny 'Under the Bushes' was the first GBV album I ever heard, I went out and bought it after seeing the video for The Official Ironmen Rally Song on 120 Minutes on MTV ... I was fascinated by the song and the video I was like who are these guys, they look kinda blue collar and the music is gritty rock but also weird and heady... still love that album I agree with you every song is good and it flows... then I went backwards and found Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes and Vampire on Titus which are still some of my favorite albums of all time from anybody.... Jellyfish Reflector ... I remember buying that back when I used to make pilgrimages to Amoeba music in Berkeley CA and I'd snatch up anything by GBV I hadn't heard.... In honor of your commemt I will go listen to Jellyfish tonight AND Fast Japanese Spin Cycle! Thanks for the jolt of artistic inspiration.... G-b-v G-b-v G-b-v!
Kevin Fennel - he’s awesome. Struggled with the disease of addiction but eventually kicked it’s butt and sober. I hope he is well, healthy and happy. He’s got such a simple kit but beats the h*ll out of it and always in time. My personal fav drummers would be #1 Stewart Copeland, Buddy Rich, John “Bonzo” Bonham, Neil Peart and the unforgettable Keith Moon.
Haha, ordered the DVD when it came out. Cost me a pretty penny, 'cus I live in the Baltics, Latvia to be precise, so the shipping costs from the States were way more than the DVD itself. :D Thanks for the upload bud! :>
Thank you - thank you - thank you for posting. I wish I would have heard this when I was 22 (in 1986) - would have changed the trajectory of my life. I don't know anyone who melds incredible melodic turns and hooks with sheer rock power like brother Bob, and he had the formula way back then. Our visit to the band shell on Sept. 2 2023 finally has visual and auditory context. Amazing document. Thanks again for posting! Mike C. and Aggie D.
Goosebumps!!This is magic, pure gold!! Can't find 60 Boats anywhere else, keep coming here for it again and again. Thx for the upload! Never heard about this band before btw, any clues where I could start exploring their music? Any specific warm-up/g.o.a.t. album maybe?
@@kirillkado hey, glad you dug! Welcome to a forever-winding rabbit hole of a discography! This early GbV has a different sound than they'd become famous for some 8-years later. For more of this jangly, funky sound, check out their excellent debut EP Forever Since Breakfast, as well as their LP Devil Between My Toes. Their 1989 record Self-Inflicted Aural Nostalgia is also quite good. Starting in 1992 with Propeller, their sound shifted to a lower-fi Proggy britpop-meets-70s-americana sound and it's FANTASTIC. Their three best albums are Propeller, Vampire on Titus, and Bee Thousand, released back-to-back. Those albums are just amazing no matter what. Hope this helps! I was born less than a month before this show... So glad to have GBV and Bob's music in my life.
All the right ingredients are available here for the tastiest cake in popular band music history 👌
He asked for more bass and got it! Mitch totally rocks it.
Mitch is EXCELLENT in this, shame he didn't stick around on Bass (although I love me some Greg Demos)
Mitch is a great bassist (those fingers are like pistons) and one of my favorite rhythm guitarists.
