I've got 2 wildlife ponds in my London urban wildlife garden, one is a 7 foot diameter pond, the other one is a 2 foot by 3 foot egg shaped pond, I haven't got pumps in any of them, as I have stocked both ponds with plenty of native British oxygenating plants, the edges of both of my ponds are not made of stones, as amphibians need greenery to help them disperse safely from a pond, (stones and paving slabs get HOT in the sun so amphibians have got a reduced chance of successfully emerging from a pond surrounded by hot stones and/or paving slabs), I haven't sloped the edges of my ponds either, as a gentle slope from garden level to the pond water level means, PREDATORS, like Blackbirds, Magpies and Crows, can simply scoop out ANY creatures like tadpoles, froglets and newts, from the edge of a sloping pond with incredible ease, thus increasing their mortality rate, BOTH of my wildlife ponds, go straight from ground level, to 10 cm deep and have native British pond plants, planted around the edges of my ponds, in order to make it "virtually impossible" for predators to get anywhere near the edge of my ponds, to help themselves to the frogspawn, tadpoles, froglets and newts, (don't forget that Crows and Magpies are "incredibly intelligent", that means, they will keep turning up, at any place that they know they can obtain and easy meal), a wildlife pond is "pretty useless" unless you create a natural habitat for the emerging amphibians, so "forget it if you have got a nice neat and tidy garden", as your emerging amphibians will probably end up in your next door neighbours long grass, getting "wiped out" every time they mow their "uncouth" lawn, IF you are a bit "heavy handed" with the weed killer and slug pellets, THAT is about as "good??" for amphibians, as sitting in a deck chair in your garden, while SHOOTING frogs and newts with an air rifle, a TRULY SUCCESSFULL wildlife pond means, you end up with a PLAGUE OF FROGS of Biblical proportions, EVERY YEAR, in your garden, turning your wildlife pond into some sort of Glastonbury Festival for amphibians.
@@ThePondAdvisorHANKS for your reply, keep up your good work putting wildlife ponds into peoples gardens,' I forgot to mention, that I put some sort of "tree stump stepping stones" around my main 7 foot diameter wildlife pond, so I can walk around it, without squashing any amphibians or damaging any emerging wildflower plants too, I also used a light beige pond liner too, so I can actually SEE the critters in my urban wildlife ponds, I haven't added pebbles to my wildlife pond and have just kept the shelves straight, so I can simply clean algae from them with ease using a small sweeping brush, (all of the stuff I remove from my wildlife pond, goes into a large bucket, where I carefully sift out the little critters there, relocating them into the wildlife pond), I have about 40 species of native British pond/waterside plants growing in and around my main 7 foot diameter wildlife pond, and "harvest" the seeds from these plants and plant some of them, on a local riverbank that has virtually zero (native British waterside plant) bio diversity, last Autumn, me and a friend of mine, distributed about 15 different species of native British waterside plant seeds, along that riverbank, thus proving that JUST ONE wildlife pond, can make a HUGE POSITIVE IMPACT on the local natural environment and bio diversity, (I also get, 25 species of birds visiting my London Urban Wildlife Garden too).
Organic Kevin keep the algae Bio film on that liner all surface areas will be helpful, love that you are put time back into nature, it’s so hard for beginners to do this as transferring weeds, but it sounds like you are experienced, creating ponds have been a hot topic again on TV which is good.
Thinking about putting one of these in my yard to propagate dragonflies and damselflies. I’ve been studying a lot of builds and yours, by far, is the most complete, well thought out, planned and executed. Great job to you and your team. I’m building my first REAL pond as soon as the ground dries out a bit, say, 2-3 months? (I’m in a rainforest west of Seattle, it rains A LOT.) And I am so bloody excited I can barely stand it! I have been watching pond building videos for ten years, since we bought our own home, and the time has finally come (got pond building stuff for birthday) and I cannot wait!!! It will be small, like this one, but with a bit of a waterfall, no fish, just a giant, fancy birdbath that will hopefully get a few frogs in it too. Lovely pond!!! thank you it means a lot, yes we have to keep our job sites clean and tidy, its the last 10%. I hate it when I come home to a messing contractor working on my home. Some make my life easier some make it harder.

It looks like it’s teeming with mosquito larvae!! 😱 Need some tiny minnows in there or dragonfly larvae to eat them. Otherwise, yes, it’s a nicely done little pond.
I've just completed my very first wildlife pond. Took several days! Only because my partner chose a location where she wanted the pond. Once I put it in the ground she wasn't happy so had to take back out fill the hole and start again new location in the garden. 😂 I'm just happy its done now. Love your video too!
Tracey Pye yes no new weed, but we are on the hunt as one plantlet will multiply 5 new ones in a week, so if you take one of today your removing 125 in three weeks time!
Wow! Outstanding! Perfect steps shown. Not too fast or too slow. Every step for a beginner needs for a new wildlife pond I can afford and handle on my own. The rain water use is priceless and helps prepare well ahead of time for my pond. Once I build it, I’m sure it’ll take a few seasons to attract pond life since I’m in a suburban area, but not too far from some land preserved for wildlife that will hopefully make it by way. I do have some spring peepers that have lived in y neighbors backyard for years and they just sold their house. Sonic afraid the new owners will take down the naturally grown area and it’s the last remaining place for the peepers anywhere in the immediate area. Thank you!
It’s crazy how quick flying insects come! We have not even finished in the summer when dragonflies come and lay eggs or “over deposit”. Some times we are like I don’t want to wash down the pond before filling.

ha ha, yes they are, its funny how quickly they find a body of water without predators, now the same pond doesn't have any, crazy to think I guess its like anything the food has to be in place first then the rest of the food chain begins

Hi, really enjoy your videos! We are in the process ourselves of building a wildlife pond, the first one, and wondered if it would attract more wildlife if we added a small pump to keep the water moving. Just thinking of keeping the water oxygenated. Any advice is much appreciated.
In the winter if it start to freeze I put some plastic sheeting over the top with space underneath be careful if the sun comes out u may need to remove it..and switch the pump of and loosen the lid on the filter

i have made many succesful wildlife ponds but now i am disabled. the only room i have in my concrete back yard is in a raised bed. i can get a small pond put in but wonder if it's worth it as the edges/walls will be at least 10 inches tall. of course i will put in a sloping pebble beach side and no pump xxx thanks xxx
I would say 10” is to shallow, I would go 12” minimum and that’s for frogs and damselflies. If you can stretch to 18” that is better even still for the amount of wildlife and plants you can keep.

HH HH no you don’t always have to put the rocks on over lay, but it’s a good habit, the foam will stick to anything, but on the over lay it’s much better, and you don’t have any problems or worries
Hi great video, I noted there was no filter installed on this build.. could you explain why.. thinking of doing something very similar but would like a a small amount of fish in it.. secondly what’s your view on hoselock bioforce filters? Would a bioforce filter with adapted plumbing to create a mystery low flow water fall be ok... I don’t yet fully understand the concept of the pond scimmers and on initial review the bioforce filter systems seem a bit more efficient over a waterfall filtration system... apologies for the lengthy enquiry... no filter? plants are natural filters, these with micro organisms keep the water sweet. I cant comment on the hoselock filters, the last time i used them was 15 years ago, now i see too many ponds that are not working for the pond owners. The eco system style of pond is way better from a maintenance point of view, not looked back, the two systems are polar opposite
Marc, I’ve built my koi pond successful. I have a preformed loner that I want for wildlife. My son dug the hole and put it in for me. I have not filled it yet because I want to landscape around it. My dilemma is that it is in a shady area underneath a tree. What can I do to prevent leaves from entering into the pond. I can’t run electricity to it so I have a solar fountain along with some oxygenating plants to go in the pond. I don’t want to put a net because the wildlife can’t get in. Should I put a low patio umbrella over it? Help. Anything to help the wildlife.
KELLY PENA I would put a net over only as the leaves are falling, most of the aquatic wildlife will be out of the pond that time of the year, I have a couple of clients that open it up during the day and covering it at night!

We love the idea of the basket - where do you source it (is it a pond-specific product, or do we have to just have to hunt out two baskets?) and what kind of pump do you recommend? And what power does a pond this size need? Is it a pump that filters too or is that not necessary - slightly overwhelmed by the choices! Thank you.
depends on what you want this was a little feature pump to simply add a little movement and oxygen, you can add a filter if you wish, the wildlife ponds don't need much. i have other videos on what filter or pump

Diane D the little pump is only for sound, drop the pump to the bottom of the pond in the winter, here in the UK we are zone 8 so we just switch it off

Cloverleaf actually does the job - pretty sure it's based on diatomaceous earth. The algae will melt in days. Then you might have to do some sludge clearing. Whether green or string, algae is a sign of nutrients in the pond. The more other plants, the less algae.
I'm in Canada and wondering what would occur in the winter? Not uncommon to have weeks of -20 or so. How deep would you have to go for anything to survive the freeze?

I'd like to make one of these but the only thing concerning me would be the mosquito's because I live in Florida and they just love the water. Yes, build it and they will come, you need to built the pond for the food of other aquatic life. It’s just like trying to set up an African plain and expecting to only see the top 5 predators. In a balanced ecosystem you need to attract and provide for the food and shelter for everything.
We have an existing wildlife pond which we now need to relocate but also realise we bought a prefab fish pond so we're digging a new pond in the new location. We're going to transfer over the water from the old pond to preserve the wildlife. Is this possible? What is the grey coloured sealant type product you use in the video please?
Hi pond enthusiasts I need a bit of advice please (sorry this might be a bit long winded). 2 years ago I had to move my pond and due to time constraints I had to basically make a concrete bucket in the ground roughy 1m cubed. It is a terrible pond with nowhere to put plants. Because frogs and newts breed in there I haven’t been turning the filter on (as it eats the tadpoles) and the algae gets really bad. Anyways, last year the algae was that bad in the pond it killed pretty much all the tadpoles so I’ve decided to rebuild my pond properly. My issue is I am finally able to afford the materials and also the time to do it but there is loads of spawn in my pond. I was thinking of moving this spawn into a temp pool while while I carry out the work as quickly as possible. I have been collecting rainwater which has now filled the temp pool and this will have plants in (which will be put in the new pond). So yeah that my issue :) any thoughts or tips? Im scared if I don’t do it now, all the tadpoles will die again. I’m so scared I’m going to scare all the frogs and newts off and they’ll never come back. Any advice would be really appreciated! Thank you
Move the spawn before it’s to later. Keep as much pond water as possible (higher than the new pond). Improve the pond and bucket the tadpole’s or syphon the lot via a large pipe (we use 50mm or above flexible pipe).

If you can build the temporary pond/pool higher than the current or new pond water level you will not have to pump the water back into the pond, so if you have tadpoles you can simply bucket them back in. I guess it depends how much spawn you currently have!

Look for the fish save logo. Or ask the rock supplier have they been used in ponds. Not all rock are suitable for fish or hard enough (some are very hard and then break down quickly in water).

Do you have any good resources on puddling clay? I'm working on a small wildlife pond in my front yard here in the states and I'm using clay(as I have basically unlimited access to clay haha) instead of using a liner and for the life of me, I can't find anything on puddling clay for a small pond. I could also be searching totally wrong haha. I figured you might have some resources or info! Thanks!
No we work a long side some estate maintenance company’s that will do it. I would recommend digging a test hole. Fill the hole with water and test or put some water in to make a big mess lol. We build everything using rubber as it’s less maintenance and moving clay around is not easy.
Is it best not to add any soil to the pond? I saw that you did put some soil in the two corners where you planted some marginal plants. Will soil in the pond make the pond start to stink?
marianne froholdt this version or pond style is for aquatic wildlife, so in this type of pond I would not recommend any fish, but a fish pond of this size would be ok to keep a few goldfish or goldfish size fish. But this all depends on we’re you live and the climate zone, do you want to keep native fish or ornamental species.

I'm making a wildlife pond at the minute. Just dug down into 2 to 3 levels (some kind of joining in places) The bottom part is 60cm deep and the first level is about 8-9inches deep. Is this too deep for a first level?

I've just completed my very first wildlife pond. Took several days! Only because my partner chose a location where she wanted the pond. Once I put it in the ground she wasn't happy so had to take back out fill the hole and start again new location in the garden. 😂 I'm just happy its done now. Love your video too!

Wow! Outstanding! Perfect steps shown. Not too fast or too slow. Every step for a beginner needs for a new wildlife pond I can afford and handle on my own. The rain water use is priceless and helps prepare well ahead of time for my pond. Once I build it, I’m sure it’ll take a few seasons to attract pond life since I’m in a suburban area, but not too far from some land preserved for wildlife that will hopefully make it by way. I do have some spring peepers that have lived in y neighbors backyard for years and they just sold their house. Sonic afraid the new owners will take down the naturally grown area and it’s the last remaining place for the peepers anywhere in the immediate area. Thank you!

Actually the wildlife comes to a new wildlife pond quickly, ours had damselfly within days and we live in suburbia too 👍
It’s crazy how quick flying insects come! We have not even finished in the summer when dragonflies come and lay eggs or “over deposit”. Some times we are like I don’t want to wash down the pond before filling.

In the winter if it start to freeze I put some plastic sheeting over the top with space underneath be careful if the sun comes out u may need to remove it..and switch the pump of and loosen the lid on the filter

Yes bricks are ok engineering bricks are best. 1/2 and 1/2 is best as the 100% rain is lacking in minerals, calcium

A pump will move the water around helping feed the plants, but from a wildlife point of view they prefer no pumps. It’s all about balance.
If u have shade u won’t get the algae try planting Xmas cactus in a pot really need shade for a wildlife pond..u don’t need a pump
i have made many succesful wildlife ponds but now i am disabled. the only room i have in my concrete back yard is in a raised bed. i can get a small pond put in but wonder if it's worth it as the edges/walls will be at least 10 inches tall. of course i will put in a sloping pebble beach side and no pump xxx thanks xxx
I would say 10” is to shallow, I would go 12” minimum and that’s for frogs and damselflies. If you can stretch to 18” that is better even still for the amount of wildlife and plants you can keep.

Great videos Do you always have to put the larger rocks on to another layer of underlay? does the foam cement not stick to the liner? And would you advise which cement you use please.
HH HH no you don’t always have to put the rocks on over lay, but it’s a good habit, the foam will stick to anything, but on the over lay it’s much better, and you don’t have any problems or worries

Hi great video, I noted there was no filter installed on this build.. could you explain why.. thinking of doing something very similar but would like a a small amount of fish in it.. secondly what’s your view on hoselock bioforce filters? Would a bioforce filter with adapted plumbing to create a mystery low flow water fall be ok... I don’t yet fully understand the concept of the pond scimmers and on initial review the bioforce filter systems seem a bit more efficient over a waterfall filtration system... apologies for the lengthy enquiry... no filter? plants are natural filters, these with micro organisms keep the water sweet. I cant comment on the hoselock filters, the last time i used them was 15 years ago, now i see too many ponds that are not working for the pond owners. The eco system style of pond is way better from a maintenance point of view, not looked back, the two systems are polar opposite
Marc, I’ve built my koi pond successful. I have a preformed loner that I want for wildlife. My son dug the hole and put it in for me. I have not filled it yet because I want to landscape around it. My dilemma is that it is in a shady area underneath a tree. What can I do to prevent leaves from entering into the pond. I can’t run electricity to it so I have a solar fountain along with some oxygenating plants to go in the pond. I don’t want to put a net because the wildlife can’t get in. Should I put a low patio umbrella over it? Help. Anything to help the wildlife.
KELLY PENA I would put a net over only as the leaves are falling, most of the aquatic wildlife will be out of the pond that time of the year, I have a couple of clients that open it up during the day and covering it at night!

If your wanting wildlife (aquatic insects) yes lots of shallow water. The shallower the better as long as you have some water 18” deep.

Hi, we have been inspired by your great video and are digging a pond for our small garden. We love the idea of the basket - where do you source it (is it a pond-specific product, or do we have to just have to hunt out two baskets?) and what kind of pump do you recommend? depends on what you want this was a little feature pump to simply add a little movement and oxygen, you can add a filter if you wish, the wildlife ponds don't need much. i have other videos on what filter or pump

Diane D the little pump is only for sound, drop the pump to the bottom of the pond in the winter, here in the UK we are zone 8 so we just switch it off

Moving the surface will help, but we we want dragonflies and damsel fly food. These ponds don’t tend to suffer from mosquitoes

It depends on the type of string algae I do have s could of video in my algae video playlist. We use a product call multi Clear to control algae.
Cloverleaf actually does the job - pretty sure it's based on diatomaceous earth. The algae will melt in days. Then you might have to do some sludge clearing. Whether green or string, algae is a sign of nutrients in the pond. The more other plants, the less algae.

Paul Tavener frogs love shallow water, temporary bodies of water are great for frogs in the UK as well. Toads like deeper water 18” or 45cm

Yes, build it and they will come, you need to built the pond for the food of other aquatic life. It’s just like trying to set up an African plain and expecting to only see the top 5 predators. In a balanced ecosystem you need to attract and provide for the food and shelter for everything.
We have an existing wildlife pond which we now need to relocate but also realise we bought a prefab fish pond so we're digging a new pond in the new location. How do you address the problem of mosquito larva/mosquito breeding in the pond, if you don't mind my asking?
In the U.K. we don’t have a massive problem like a lot of places. We encourage the other wildlife into our gardens that feast on the mozzies.
Hi pond enthusiasts I need a bit of advice please (sorry this might be a bit long winded).
2 years ago I had to move my pond and due to time constraints I had to basically make a concrete bucket in the ground roughy 1m cubed. It is a terrible pond with nowhere to put plants.
Because frogs and newts breed in there I haven’t been turning the filter on (as it eats the tadpoles) and the algae gets really bad. Anyways, last year the algae was that bad in the pond it killed pretty much all the tadpoles so I’ve decided to rebuild my pond properly.
My issue is I am finally able to afford the materials and also the time to do it but there is loads of spawn in my pond. I was thinking of moving this spawn into a temp pool while while I carry out the work as quickly as possible. I have been collecting rainwater which has now filled the temp pool and this will have plants in (which will be put in the new pond).
So yeah that my issue :) any thoughts or tips? Im scared if I don’t do it now, all the tadpoles will die again. I’m so scared I’m going to scare all the frogs and newts off and they’ll never come back. Any advice would be really appreciated! Thank you
Move the spawn before it’s to later. Keep as much pond water as possible (higher than the new pond). Improve the pond and bucket the tadpole’s or syphon the lot via a large pipe (we use 50mm or above flexible pipe).

If you can build the temporary pond/pool higher than the current or new pond water level you will not have to pump the water back into the pond, so if you have tadpoles you can simply bucket them back in. I guess it depends how much spawn you currently have!

Look for the fish save logo. Or ask the rock supplier have they been used in ponds. Not all rock are suitable for fish or hard enough (some are very hard and then break down quickly in water).

Cheapest is not the best, best cheap pond pump for a waterfall come be a number. I would buy the best you can afford!

I'm working on a small wildlife pond in my front yard here in the states and I'm using clay(as I have basically unlimited access to clay haha) instead of using a liner and for the life of me, I can't find anything on puddling clay for a small pond. No we work a long side some estate maintenance company’s that will do it. I would recommend digging a test hole. Fill the hole with water and test or put some water in to make a big mess lol. We build everything using rubber as it’s less maintenance and moving clay around is not easy.

marianne froholdt this version or pond style is for aquatic wildlife, so in this type of pond I would not recommend any fish, but a fish pond of this size would be ok to keep a few goldfish or goldfish size fish. But this all depends on we’re you live and the climate zone, do you want to keep native fish or ornamental species.

6' is 1.8m and 4' is 1.2m so the pond was 1.8m by 1.2m by 30cm or 45cm deep
I'm making a wildlife pond at the minute. Just dug down into 2 to 3 levels (some kind of joining in places) The bottom part is 60cm deep and the first level is about 8-9inches deep. Is this too deep for a first level?
Yes and No dig it out to that level then create planting pockets or shallower levels with the rock work.
Is there an upper limit to amount of flow that that 2 pot filter can take? Likely will be using a 1200LPH.
yes, you can use 1200 litre you will have to clean the pot out sooner, plus use the best quality ones
