  • Wildlife and beneficial insects are key to creating a sustainable self-sufficient garden. They help form part of a balanced ecosystem and creating a small DIY wildlife pond in the garden is an incredible way to attract them.
    Join me to create my new pond from start to finish (well kind of...nothing is ever really "finished" in my garden)!
    By creating a wildlife pond, you are not only providing a habitat for a variety of natural life but also fostering diversity in your surroundings. These ponds act as sanctuaries for a wide array of wildlife, including frogs, lizards, birds, dragonflies, and beneficial insects such as bees and butterflies. These creatures play essential roles in pollination, pest control, and maintaining a balanced ecosystem.

    You are exceptional Holly. I absolutely love this. We have a backyard pond and it is my favourite place! And after 2 years we got frogs, which made me so so happy :) Those floating solar lights are gorgeous, getting some of those for sure! Thank you for sharing all of your wonderful backyard permaculture garden. I am such a big fan of your work and valuable information and tips xx

    This has been my favorite video of yours. I would enjoy additional videos on how the pond is doing today. What were your ponds challenges? What would you do differently and why?

    We had a pond made out of a stock tank at our old house and I loved it. We have been in our new house for 2 1/2 years and I miss it so much. We had goldfish in it and we never had a problem with mosquitos. It was at least 3 feet deep and we never had moving water but it mostly was lovely. Occasionally in the Spring it would turn a bit green but as the plants covered it, it would clear up and just be so peaceful. I'm still trying to convince my husband that it would be a good idea to have a pond here. Our ground is like concrete here so the digging would be quite hard. Maybe I'll have to find something smaller.

      Maybe you could do above ground I’ve seen some amazing ones. It’s so interesting to watch, I really hope I get lots more wildlife appearing as it continues to grow and fill out!

    What do you think of the new wildlife pond!? Should I go for Pond 2.0 on the other side of the garden?? Many projects are on the go atm before the Spring season starts and it's all about planting seeds. My lack of rainwater is becoming more apparent.... so that's also a project I have been thinking about a lot. A garden is constantly evolving and I love that!

      Hi Holly. I was so happy to see you have uploaded a new video. I hope I have not missed any livestreams, have I? Ugh, I hope not .. those are always so much fun. Anyway, Pond 2.0 sounds fabulous. The one you have created by your window is so beautiful. I was going to ask you if you had angled the ground a bit to prevent possible overflow from heavy rains from going to your window.. but then you mentioned lack of rain water. No worries for overflow at all?

    • @SustainableHolly
      @SustainableHolly  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No you haven’t missed any the lives will be back soon!! once I catch up on editing 😅 the front is cut so it would overflow more that direction. It is under the eaves so doesn’t get too much rain (also Perth ☀️😅)

    Love the use of ponds in gardens, great work. We use sugar cane mulch which we find is good to keep the ground moist and no problems with termites if we were to use wood bark or other woody substances. In far NQ here

    • @SustainableHolly
      @SustainableHolly  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes we also have trouble with termites so probably a good thing. I now have a mulcher to make my own too 😁

    I've never been to Australia, so I'm waiting in fear for carpet pythons, spiders as big as MiniCoopers, great whites and dingos to come out of your gardens 😵. Yes, I've been watching TH-cam....but I know better! I love make bee watering stations. They show up immediately, as if they've been waiting. I love your pond. So doable and natural-looking. Thanks for sharing.

    A few things…first, I love that the violets are shade tolerant 🙏 I have been searching for a shade tolerant solution to one section of my garden and I think they might be it…I also love that the flowers are edible. Second I love your pebble filled bee bath 😍 I have an empty shallow bowl/pot thing and I was wondering what to do with it and I was like…”oh, obviously” when I saw you making one. Love it! Third…where are you finding discounted plants in Perth??? I can never seem to find any on markdown…but I assume I’m just looking in the wrong place 🤷🏼‍♀️. Love your work and I love that you’re sharing local advice to all your perth followers. Thank you ☺️

    Can you please tell us where you got the pond bacteria and de-chlorinating things from? Also the plants for the people who live in Perth. Thanks

    If you are able to add a pump this will help with the mosquito larvae, I’ve just recently added a small fountain to my garden and I absolutely love it. Sadly no fish but lots of rocks and a couple of
    Plants in mine 😊❤. Fish names… pineapple, sage or Feijoa for one

    • @SustainableHolly
      @SustainableHolly  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I am keeping an eye out for a solar fountain! Love those names! The minnows are even pineapple colours!

    If you have an under water camera or phone camera in a waterproof case, I’d love to see under the water to see the fish in action!
