St. Pete couple raises parrot like a child

  • Apollo is only 2, but he’s growing up fast.
He knows the names of colors and how to ask questions to satisfying his growing curiosity. His parents nourish him with fresh chicken eggs, organic vegetables and the occasional bug. He loves looking out the window and crushing pistachios into his sharp, clawed feet.
“We always kiss after I give him a snack,” said his mother, Tori Lacey.
“He’s my son, my child,” she continued. “But also a project.”
Lacey, 24, and her fiance, Dalton Mason, 23, have been raising Apollo to be most intelligent bird possible. The African grey parrot can answer questions on command and clearly communicate what he’s thinking.

I like when Apollo asks 'whats this' and the trainer responded 'It's a flash light'
    Then Apollo asks 'What Color'?
    He reversed the roles...Such a smart bird....❤❤❤

Dr. Pepperberg's research and methods probably didn't teach Alex or Griffin to ask questions - they probably already knew how. They just gave the birds the ability and incentive to convey those questions in a way people could understand. Same goes for Apollo.

I have an African Grey, but mine is a Timneh. They are a little bit smaller than the Congo, which is what Apollo is, and they also have a light-colored beak and a maroon tail rather than the vibrant red that Apollo has. My Caesar is a rescue. He was 20 when I rescued him, although they lied and said he was 16, as I found his records. He was also primarily cage-bound and can’t fly and will never fly due to wing clipping and being kept in the cage. He never developed the wing strength needed at this point and I don’t think it is possible at this point, although we work on it and I certainly don’t clip his wings. He was terrified of toys when I got him and now he goes through one a day. He gives the sweetest nose boops in the world and he warms up to us more and more. He is learning new words every day, which makes me so happy, as I worried how well he’d learn so much later in life. They interacted with him so little that they didn’t even know what words he knew. They would only take him out of his cage to watch Wheel of Fortune and he does make that tone you hear with the letters or a new puzzle. So cute, but sad too. Please don’t adopt one of these birds just because it seems cool. They are a full-time commitment and require your constant attention or you aren’t giving them the life they deserve and you’re actively harming them. Like this couple says, they are parents and they’re raising him like a child, because he does have the mind of a child - like even up to around age 7, and has the exact same needs as a child and that includes constant attention and protection, love, affection, and intellectual stimulation.
We rescued Caesar last summer. I will occasionally put up videos and have on other social media.
Oh and forgot to mention there is a girl on TH-cam with a Cockatoo that she has been teaching to read and use a tablet.

He's so smart and articulate that the first few times I watched a video with Apollo in it, I was looking so closely trying to find the ventriloquist certain that a bird could not sound that good, his 'parents' have cleverly taught him to realise his full potential blowing the myth that parrots only repeat right out of the water. I've always believed that animals are a lot more intelligent than they are given credit for, we add humans seem to think we are superior but I believe we could learn so much more from animals if only we allowed ourselves to be taught by them 🤩

  • @benjiebenjamin7810

I had a Quaker Parrot, (he died 😢💔 2000) & he was very responsive to objects, size, shapes, colors, etc.....I treated him like teaching a child. It helps I was the only person, no distractions of kids, others with opposing views, etc..
He potty trained himself, flew freely, watched the Animal Channel while I worked.
I believe if it has a brain it can learn.
My dogs usually are above average too as I teach them basic objects, actions, etc., then expand as they grow (yes, you can teach an old dog new tricks).
My Parrot, Guy, while he was dying was listless, stopped talking for 3 days. I kept him @ my neck nestled in a hankie 'til the last, May 7th, about midnite he said, "I love you" then exhaled his last breath.
Animals are a lot more intelligent, sensitive & loving that many hoomans give them credit for.
They're 'people' too, they just look different & have different needs 😉♥️.

I’m sure if you ask anyone who’s lived any length of time with a bird, they will corroborate this story. I’ve lived 35 years with up to 4 parrots. My first bird a wild caught untame cherry head conure. He was a willful bird, but he became my absolute most devoted bird. He just passed last year on Memorial Day. Then a hand fed baby severe macaw who my conure fell in love with. My big bird Brazilian purebred B&G macaw 🦜 I adopted a friends Congo African Grey. So decades with the same birds 🤷🏼‍♀️

I don't think Apollo made a mistake at 1:44, he was just looking at the shirt. Quite possible that even the next one was technically correct, orange and red are next to each other on the color wheel, so it may be hard to tell where one begins and the other ends, especially if your eyes and nervous system are so different from humans.

    • @JanusHoW
      @JanusHoW ปีที่แล้ว +2

I suspect parrots can see the same range, if not a wider range of colors than humans can. Wild Greys probably subsist heavily on fruits and nuts in their African jungle home, and need to be able to identify which are good to eat, and which are not. In fact, the fact that fruits are colorful at all is because of birds' ability to see color.

I hope he doesn't get too difficult when he reaches sexual maturity. It can be heartbreaking. My female amazon is so hormonal 24/7, 365 days of the year. It's really sad as they're always in pairs in the wild. I had two female amazons that were bonded which was awesome as I didn't have to worry about them breeding, but when you have just one it can get pretty upsetting for them and to watch on a daily basis. Nothing distracts her and she makes the mating sound from morning 'til night, walking around the house trying to find something to destroy so she can use it as a nest. She also tries to stay under the couch all day and that's really hard to keep her from doing.

There's an implant that can be inserted in their chest to stop the behavior, but it doesn't always work plus it needs to be done every six months which is expensive, plus they need to be put out which is dangerous. In 44 years of owning parrots, she's the only one with this problem that's over the top. It's heartbreaking and proves to me that parrots shouldn't be kept in captivity.

Rather than training them (or not to this degree), their owners treat and talk to them like intelligent members of the family. And the birds really respond in a way that shows comprehension, dialogue, and also they are hilarious jokesters. I would say Apollo is not the smartest bird. He could be though, I bet...if they upped the level of conversation from toddler to teenager.

A lot of problems with animal cognitive studies is actually demonstrating if they have understandings of the concepts, and the connection of the word to a specific thing. Like when Apollo says "what's this" does he actually understand that's something that asks a question, or is it a vocalization to generate a response (thus attention)? Differentiating the two is extremely difficult.
My Aunt used to have a parrot who could mimic the telephone ringing, and he would make the vocalization to get attention because if we acted like the phone was ringing we'd find him. That doesn't mean he understands what a phone ringing is.

There are others who weren't so much as trained as picked it up. Gizmo has actual conversations, Cosmo as well and she has shown empathy. Gizmo loves sarcasm. I'm sure there are dozens more out there. I've ALWAYS said that any animal is as smart as you let them be and I stand by that. Just like humans there are ranges. There are dogs and cats who now communicate very effectively with buttons so the HUMAN understands them, they were communicating the entire time, it's HUMANS that are stupid. Just the guidelines on what they base intelligence on shows how stupid our race is. We are the most incapable inter-species communicators out there. Merekats and bird understand each other, for example, to a degree that saves the other species lives. Humans are stupid, animals are smart.

For Super Bowl the side line entertainment on another network is "Puppy Bowl." You guys should be on another network next year with "Apollo Bowl" or don't forget the girls and call it "Bird Bowl." I think it'd be more entertaining. You don't even have to pre-prepare anything, just do a live feed. If you go with this idea I would appreciate honorable mention. OK, I'll just take a PISTASHH.
