The mother of the suspected Apalachee High School gunman told family members that she called the school on the morning of the shooting and warned a counselor about an “extreme emergency” involving her 14-year-old son, according to text messages obtained by The Washington Post and an interview with a family member.
That account is supported by a call log from the family’s shared phone plan, which shows a 10-minute call from the mother’s phone to the school starting at 9:50 a.m. - about a half-hour before witnesses have said the gunman opened fire.
“I was the one that notified the school counselor at the high school,” Marcee Gray texted her sister following the shooting on Sept. 4, according to a screenshot of the exchange. “I told them it was an extreme emergency and for them to go immediately and find [my son] to check on him.”

The Sheriff and the GBI were SO fast to pay their backs during their press conference about how super fast the response was!!!! They did not want this out. In 2024 you best believe its going to get out. And it should! EVERY threat should be acted on immediately!!!

Exactly, and the Sheriff called a mother of a classmate a liar at the press conference (on national television) when she asked why they looked for the wrong kid first. Sounds like the mother was absolutely right, and the Sheriff was the one being deceptive.

The grandmother also went in person and spoke to the counselor all the kids hated the counselor. They said she did the bare minimum . The counselor should go straight to prison because she could’ve probably prevented this. Thank you.

    This is so heartbreaking. :(
His Mom should have called the police maybe instead of the school? Of course all they had to do was pull the alarm & put the school on lockdown. If nothing happened & it was a false alarm then they just had a practice drill. No harm. My heart breaks for these families knowing this could have been prevented. 💔

I said it before and I’ll say it again. The system failed from the start. Our wonderful governor has allowed this to happen. You can get a gun here with no type of background checks, waiting time or anything. His campaign was of him with a big gun, and even blew a car up in the campaign commercials. This was preventable. My daughter goes to school 15 minutes from there and has a close friend in the school. This has affected so many communities and so many families.
They say see something, say something, well we see how that works. Those children should’ve been taken by children services a long time ago. Those children were in the house with drugs and DV. But nothing was done. It even played out on FB prior to this and the investigation last year. I pray for the victims and their families and the communities.

Here is another problem, if a child has a service plan (or if there was a list) the substitute teachers aren’t allowed to know that information. It’s against policy here in Johnston County, NC so the child’s accommodations aren’t met. If there was a list of names, substitute teachers wouldn’t be privy to that list. There are so many blind spots in these policies.

"We focus on healing right now", better not talk about taking accountability for your wrong doing, that's what you learn your students?! Kids were the heros here, kids reacting faster than trained adults, kids understanding the situation and the danger better than trained adults and making the right decisions, kids saved lifes and tried to save more, while every adult failed, from parents to law enforcement to school administration. And then they make stupid press conference were they praise themselves, disgusting. Take responsibility for your inactions and be at least now sb the kids can look up to and have respect for. 😤

I think the school that he left from because of his behavior should have put in an attention letter as to spelling out what they had seen in his behavior as a heads up. I'll also say that depending on what the grandmother said it could have just been yeah we've been having troubles with him at home and he's skipping school a lot so maybe they just thought that they were worried about his attendance and weren't really thinking this worst case scenario but I definitely hope this is a Learning lesson and a way to come to more mandatory counseling for these kids.

It is illegal to transfer discipline records. If the parents or grandparents didn't disclose, the school would have not know about his issues. I'm pretty sure they didn't say he was homicidal. They probably said he was depressed and suffered from being bullied.

See, now this is why I never felt unsafe in my high school: 1) Columbine went down just before I began @ the h.s., &, bc of that, 2) my school enlisted a strict "all entry doors to remain locked except for from 8:05-8:15a; 3) metal detectors were put in place @ the entrances; 4) a sheriff's deputy would remain stationed in an office next to the guidance counselors while another would remain on foot patrol throughout the school day & they were required to stay on campus for their lunches; 5) no student could be admitted thru the doors after 8:15a lockdown unless they call ahead, they must have a written excuse AND submit to search & patdown; 6) no students were allowed to leave for lunches or for dr appts unless a parent came to sign them out; 7) we had to wear a photo ID on our lanyards the entire school day, coming w/o it 1x = internal suspension, 3x w/o = external suspension, 5x or more w/o = expellation; 8) each class, hall, & stairwell had a trigger button that would sound an alarm similar to the fire buzzer, it would initiate classroom door locks, in case the teacher forgot to lock the door as class began, & we weren't allowed to open those doors for students NOR teachers until the alarm is shut off & 1 of the resource officers cleared the area; 9) We spent the 1st few days @ the beginning of each semester drilling for active shooters wherein, in the event we heard gunshots, we were to all go to the corner of the room farthest from windows, & the desks around, which were bullet resistant, & we were to quickly stack them to make a shield wall, like Vikings.
The scariest I ever saw in school was a fist fight between a student & a teacher that the male gym teacher started by knocking all the kids books & lunch off the cafeteria table & smacking him across the head & the kid, whom had always had temper issues & who's parents already narced on the teacher 1x for pushing the kid 1.5' shorter around, but that teacher got his butt beat & the kid got expelled, the teacher didn't even get a reprimand. Also, during a student v. student fight, 1 kid was power-driven into a plate glass window on the 3rd floor, & his head smashed thru the glass, but no 1 ever head weapons.. even suspicion of such ideas would mean automatic expelling, no questions asked

It would seem to me that Colt SHOULD have been on a WATCH LIST or were both boys on a watch list, they were already aware that Colt was a troubled teen according to the father's statement of being in close contact with people at the schools about his struggles, which makes me believe the other boy should have been less of a possible threat. All of the troubled teens need to be on a picture board and every school employee should be watching their every move and what’s on their person, sad but if you're troubled you should be watched for the threat you are to the public

First of all an email isn't going to say anything about potential violence due to FERPA laws. An administrator or security or school officer will probably get the kid. What did the mother specifically say? If she did not specifically mention a threat of violence, that is not the immediate thought coming from the school. As a school counselor I would assume that the student is suicidal, not homicidal. Immediate assistance is needed, but not police for a suicidal student. You can't keep a kid on radar to all staff due to FERPA LAWS., only staff who have an educational interest.

You cant accuse him of something he hasn’t done. There are laws to protect the child. But a private list should have been sent to all staff and there should have been a meeting letting staff know to monitor this child at all times

I don't think the mom told the school that he had the gun.
    Nor the grandmother.
Why didn't the mom call the grandparents or father to go up to the school immediately?
They don't live that far away.
The school should've lock down right away.
Kids around here are still scared to go back to school.

If she knew what her son was about to do it’s not the school she needed to inform… ITS LAW ENFORCEMENT!!!
You don’t call the school to be blown off then do nothing…
You call LE and say they need to go to the school and why… then call the school and tell LE is on the way and why… she’s just as guilty as he is…

I don't know if you have children but, for most parent's calling the police on your own child is difficult.. I called them on my son when he was 12 n it was so hard but many people won't even entertain the idea and this mother probably hates police being put in jail as many time's as she has.. 🤨

Mom and her dad (his grandfather) are trying to play babyface now but the first call she should have made was to the police.

Yes. 12 minutes in and just about subscribing and advertising himself. Another 12 minutes up still only said what it said in the title. Off to look for someone who doesn’t prattle on in between facts.
