The problem with Kontoglou’s “Ekphrasis” is that it is only available in Greek. I’ve seen some unofficial English translations but they are simply focused on the technical aspect such as what colors to use. While that is helpful for English speakers, the whole book in English would really help so many iconographers. Your video is wonderful, as always, Antonios.
Thank you for that precious information. I would love to buy that book. Do you know where can I get it in English? Unfortunately I cannot find it online. Many greetings, very informative video🙏
I really like the Cretan style of iconography very much! There's something almost modern about it, like cubism or abstract realism. I know that many people ask you about the colors you use- I'd like to know also. Many of us are completely new to the materials used in iconography, and finding the right colors seems difficult. If you forget to mention them, maybe you could post them on screen like captions? Sorry, I'm not familiar with the technical terms! Really beautiful work though, thank you!
Thank you, sir, for these wonderful videos. I watch them and implement them... But I have a problem with the red dress that you are now coloring... My question is what color do you use to highlight the folds of the dress? I mean the color of lightening over the red.. Is it orange or yellow... Or combine the two colors... I have a big problem with this. Please help me, Mr. Antunes... Thank you
Antonia thank you for your beautiful and prayerful iconography demonstrations. You humbly make it look so simple and logical . Thank you. Perhaps you have already done a video on this subject, but I would like to see how you mix your egg tempera, add pigment and water, etc.
In the future, can you share what colours you are using - for example, the darker lines in the red proplasmos , are they the same as the proplasmos with black added? And the first highlights, are they the typical yellow with white or are they the reddish proplasmos with some white added? Maybe you mentioned and I missed it. Thank you.
Could you explain these Greek terms for what I’m assuming are the different shades of the paint? Or link to a video if you’ve already explained them somewhere? Also, I’d love to know how , say, Russian iconography differed from what I assume is this Greek/Byzantine style. Thank you!
Hi Antonis - thank you again for a helpful video. I have a couple of questions. You mentioned copying the masters. What are your thoughts on tracing vs. drawing? I see the value is learning how to draw so that I understand the underlying anatomy; on the other hand, with so many skills to develop (and mistakes to be made!) in learning iconography, the tracing allows the basic shapes and proportions to remain true so that painting skill can grow. A second question has to do with the highlighting. With secular art, we have a sense of where/how to highlight because we consider the direction of the light source. Iconography doesn't follow that principle generally so - is there a principle guiding where one places the lights (e.g. over or under or around lines, etc.). Of course, one can follow the reference, but it would be helpful to understand what these decisions are based on so as to avoid glaring errors. I apologize if you have answered these questions elsewhere - I have not watched all of your tutorials.
Mary thank you so much for the amazing questions. I will try to be consise.. I believe that drawing is essential... Especially if you are young, aspiring to be of pro level, are deep into the painting process. If your goals do not go that deep Traci g is really great. For me the important is to stay busy, creative, calm, and faithful to what we do no matter what. And of course to not do it principally for the money. Fot your. Next question I would say that there is a specific place for the highlights in Iconography. Follow your references as much as possible and soon you will have the experience to highlight anything you want correctly.
@@PaintingtheLight Thank you so much. Alas, I am not young. And my only aspiration is to give glory to God. Can you recommend a good source for reference icons? When I search the internet, I do not always have the experience and discernment to differentiate the good from the not-so-good and do not want to build bad habits by only choosing what appeals to my senses.
I wonder how you do this first red layer so smooth. I have problems with it because I have brightenes in it or if I put some amount of paint on recently putted layer, I make kind of holes. Because this first layer is stirred by my brush when i put the next layer. I dont know how to deal with it :(.
You have to A) use a kolinsky brush (check links on description text of my last video) B) Make correct recipe of egg tempera : 1 part yolk 1 part water, few drops vinegar C) Do not paint at the same point a lot.. Move on to the next and let wet pigment rest. Let dry properly before applying next layer. Hopefully this helps... 😊
Thank you from France, it's help me a lot !!!! .
Πολυ ωραια εργασια ! Χαιρομαι να σας βλεπω .Ευχαριστω !

Again, very grateful to see you work - it’s such a pleasure . Are you working in egg tempera or acrylic? Greetings from Canada. :)

That's a good idea....I will try to remember to share the colors I use more often ... :)

Very nice!
First of all it’s really blessing when I watch and learn

what color is the line drawn on top of the dark red?
How is the book you mentioned called? I didn't understood (in the 7 minute)

I think that the problem might be in the egg tempera. Thanks a lot!
@@PaintingtheLight i changed the recipe of egg yolk as you told me and problem is gone. Thank you 🌻
Why do new iconographers use modern icons to follow? Because that is what shows up on Google in high enough resolution images to print out 😅
Very right!!!!!
Πολύ ωραίο ρουχο, ποιος υμνος είναι στο λεπτό 19 με 20;
Ευχαριστώ ..την επόμενη φορά θα βάλω σύνδεσμο για τον υμνο
