I released close to 45 songs, a few of which I’ve deleted along the way. I can see a tiny growth in my fanbase with each release. But I also have to admit that my music was not as good when I started lol
I think my biggest problem is that I haven’t promoted enough. I release a song and I forget about it and move on to the next one because I want to improve each time.
But watching this made me want to give my old songs a proper chance. Thank you!

  • @worksofein6449

I've got 45 songs out and 4 listeners on Spotify, one of which is me. My music is a niche within a niche, and I don't really promote it. I've no objective way to tell if it's any good, but I enjoy making and listening to it so I guess it doesn't matter in the end.

I think your first reason applies to 90% of artists, advertising in the music industry is a huge advantage that most labels use to their fullest whilst independent artists for some reason have the notion that gaining listeners through advertising is inorganic which is totally false. Remember that your target audience may not even have the time to find your music so why not make it more visible. :)

Personally reason number 1.) "Not promoting it enough" is my downfall. I'm assuming a good amount of indie artists feel like they are annoying people with the number of times they push a track and I fall underneath that category. This is something I will be working on and hopefully finding a strategy to execute. Thank you Burstimo!

  • @Bthelick

yup, reason 4 comes down to people not understanding what a brand really is. people think its a dirty corporate marketing word, but it just means identity. I speak to so many bands that are trying to write the perfect song, but they don't have a story, or even a message, the music means nothing without a brand. You should pick an identity first, then make the art to go with that identity, it's far easier for an audience to get what you do then.
And what you said about emulating successful acts when you yourself are not successful is spot on: You shouldn't try to look/sound/write like coldplay when you don't have their (current) budget / team. if you're just starting you're supposed to sound like your just starting, maybe even lean into that. people feel much better about supporting something that has potential, than some act pretending to be something else it clearly isn't.

The problem is no more good music from famous artists are being produced, if you are unknown nobody cares about your music no matter how good they are. It has been like this for decades, beautiful music from 60,70,80 will never come back and that is what we hear on the radio most the time. Why hear your music if there are thousands of masterpieces.

  • @DeepFriedHallelujah

Most of these videos focus on media presence, yet rarely if ever touch on creating a following in their own town. Any halfway successful artists I personally know established themselves locally, then regionally, at which point media had some effect. You said it, word of mouth is big. But let’s be honest (and you touched on it) the reason I don’t click on every artist ad I see online is 1. There’s too many it’s saturated and 2. Most of it is simply not that good. It’s easy to fall in love with our own babies, but pictures of our babies rarely impress strangers. Unless we are truly remarkable, it’s a lost cause. It can be hard to know. I for example know I’m just not good enough so I do it for a hobby. We all have those few friends that insist we’re good and should chase the dream. I find those people mean well but do more harm than good. It’s when strangers fall in love and obsess over it that you know you’re onto something. People who already know and care about you are biased.

I used to have a lot of music but I just scrapped it all and planning to start from scratch (or as some say, starting from experience), Use to go by a different name like a stage name, but now just go by my name I was given when I was born. I done a photo shoot for individual singles artwork and for the album artwork. Nothing recorded yet but I'm planning to take my time on the recording process. I work with a bunch of lads where they do music too, but 2 of them are in charge of organising events, doing the photoshoots, music videos and the recording, mixing and mastering. I have an idea who my target audience is but as you said you can't always be 100% sure and it could be an audience that you didn't expect. I'm planning on taking my time with each release and focusing on promoting it properly and authentically, unfortunately when I use to go by my previous stage name I did fall into the ego trap of appearance and trying to look like I was successful when I really wasn't, so I'm making sure this time that's not going to happen, having no expectations of how well it goes, just planning on being grateful for whatever feedback I get and keep repeating the process of consistency with the promotion of each release, and for a lengthy enough time before the next one and so on. When it comes to the songs, they're real life experiences and taking a different approach with with them, but having no expectations on how well they do because it'll will bring some disheartening like it used to when I wanted instant gratification. I'm gonna have this video on loop to keep me in line and not to mess up in the future, great content as usual.

Il add a number 6. You can implement all the advice you want but don't forget the big picture. If you focus too much on promotion, you forget about the process of creating music itself (enjoy the journey not the destination type stuff).
Make sure you don't fixate on getting more views and attention otherwise you become disingenuous to yourself and what you truly enjoy making. If you can find it within yourself to detach from that, you will enjoy music production for what it is, and nothing will constrain you from creating your best work.

I just released my first song and mv a few days ago and I'm very happy with the views (3k might not sound like a lot but to me it's insane!!) But you just encouraged me to promote it more (I gave up on promoting because I can't afford it) but I will try the tips you gave on free promotion in other videos as much as I can. Thank you for this, I needed the encouragement!❤️

I spend weeks and weeks producing a great track that I’m proud of then even none of my close friends or girlfriend will listen to it let alone anyone else. It’s so pointless making music but I’m not stopping. Just gonna make it for myself.

I think the "32 songs" insight is super useful and confirms what a lot of us suspected already i.e. you need a solo foundation in place to gain more fans. Its a bit of a catch 22 in that the less followers and listeners you have, the harder it is to get new ones, but I guess thats why the first few years are such a grind! We've only 6 songs out since we started 2 years ago (thanks covid) so we really need to get our skates on!

As a statistician and a musician, it is ALWAYS about the targeting and finding the right audience. On a planet of over 7 billion people there is an audience for everything. Quality music? Very subjective. The so called "taste makers" that you refer to are historically the same middlemen folks who dismissed every major artists imaginable from the Beatles to Elvis. The problem with the music industry is that artists are not provided with the proper tools to find the right audience for every song. I spent a career developing algorithms to identify the right individuals for every promotion imaginable, the tools that are provided to artists today (Facebook, Instagram, TH-cam, etc.) are a callback to the early 1980's when marketers could only use "lists" of purchasers or subscribers to one thing or another. Btw, great reminder to folks about videos. I focus more on the videos myself, and encourage others to do the same.

You are absolutely right! Talk about quality in art is generally crap. I'm not saying this as a frustrated musician - have a terrific music education and worked very successfully as a professional musician for 25 years in my younger years, before working as an information technologist for 20 years. Then 2 years ago, retired, I picked up electronic music production from scratch, and am now heading for 1 million streams. At first I had no idea at all about pop music and mixing and mastering, but I had 2 ears and knew how it should sound to me. For the mainstream addicts it was absolute crap, but I found my audience. That's how it works! Otherwise there would never be any innovations in art. I appreciate burstimo very much, but with statements like that they have to take off their marketing glasses for once. Art doesn't need judges!
