    Chinese food labelling regulations requires the date of production (rather than the use-by date) to be marked, along with the shelf life. Therefore it is likely that this self-heated hotpot did not expire after all. Glad you loved it anyway.

    • @RT-qd8yl
      @RT-qd8yl ปีที่แล้ว +8

      They can still be within date and deadly contaminated though. The MRE that almost took Steve1989 out was only like 6 months old, if that.

    If I found the right version of that meal, the only sea-food in it is kelp. The rest is all vegetables - the noodles are made from konjac, a slimy kind of tuber.
    The heater is a different type from the usual MRE heaters. This type is (mostly?) calcium oxide, which is pretty energetic (~60 grams + 20 grams water could heat that meal by 50°C), but degrades with CO2 exposure over time, and makes a somewhat unpleasant alkaline solution/slurry that you don't want accidentally getting in your food.

    • @igrim4777
      @igrim4777 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheBackyardChemistHigh cross sensitivity in CO sensors is standard for many combustible gases like you said. Hydrogen is the worst with about a 20% cross sensitivity so 100 ppm H2 reads as about 20 ppm CO. You can get this down to around 5% using a special, ie expensive, catalyst that doesn't work so well at catalysing H2. More money and since most people's houses aren't used for generating or processing hydrogen this premium model isn't used.
      Or you can slash cross sensitivity to around 1% by packaging two sensors in one unit, one for CO, one for H2 then subtracting the H2 reading from the CO reading. Double the sensors for half the battery life and lot more cost. So again not used outside of hydrogen using of producing industries. Battery charging is one of the worst culprits. It's just a side effect but outgassing of hydrogen in a site that otherwise doesn't use hydrogen is common.

    crazy looking meal and all that steam it generated i was expecting it to be like a lipo battery and it would been like "jokes on you" as a fireball or something insane comes out the back. maybe they could do that with a flame bbq version.

    1:35 For manufacturing it would be easier and cheaper to just dump all the ingredients in the aluminum tray, but they separated it all.. So I wonder were you opposed to mixing it all before heating it all, or gradually adding it while heating?
    Or was it only to give you the feeling you actually prepare *something* yourself?
    edit: I read the description afterward. Chief giving you this meal, is that how you get paid, with out-of-date food?

      I would have chickened out the moment I read squid, no matter the date. Only (semi) Chinese meal I've ever tried was some instant "Asia Noodle Snack"… looked good in dry form, but once cooked those noodles smelled like wet sweaty feet. Cured me of food curiousness for years.

    You definitely have to stir it up a lot more than that! That black thing is the chili packet where the chili/oil/spices are. Flavour is primarily from that very important packet. STIR IT UP WELL!

  • @TroyHowarth
    @TroyHowarth ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's actually fairly interesting! Did you have a thermometer to see what temperature the heat pack reached? It really didn't look appetising though. Not sure I'd eat it.

  • @kitsunekaze93
    @kitsunekaze93 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    The self heating things are really nice! My father brought home boxes of MREs that were about to be thrown out due to them expiring before their next military exercise, so i suddenly had a lot of food just PERFECT for camping!
    And i can vouch that the expiry date is just a suggestion for most of the stuff, use common sense in the form of smells and doing a small taste test before eating it and you can eat most things even though its a year or two off, probably longer for some!
    the 4 years out of date beef jerky would probably have broken my teeth before actually making me sick

      To be fair, US beef jerky is vile stuff, you need to get proper biltong to find out just how bad it actually is. Bought a pack once from the local Wallyworld, and threw it away to the birds after just one piece. They also did not want to eat it, and flying rats eat anything.

  • @gabydewilde
    @gabydewilde ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Like with ramen, it helps if you've eaten it a few times and know which ratio you prefer. It's fine to put only half the oil in if you don't like it (many do!) and (while you should mix it in properly) you should make it as hot as you like it.
    Then again, maybe you shouldn't. hot plastic and cooking in aluminum foil is a pretty terrible idea. It seems hard to believe non of the chemicals in the heat pack makes it way to the food.
    Fun to see tho, thanks for showing it.

    everyone talkin bout how brave it is to eat this but i'm pretty sure there's enough salt there that we should be more concerned about how those things often contain enough salt that they'll pickle your insides. but for real it's all hella sterilized since large amounts of those bowls contain stuff that's already fermented and if you don't pasteurize them hard they'll bloat up in the packets which is less than ideal.

    For packets like the brown stuff and similar, you can cut the whole top off, or just a corner is smaller (like ketchup, mustard, etc.), then FOLD the packet in half or less, then squeezing from bottom is easy and works very well.
