An important factor in how a 2 stroke engine runs is the pressure in the exhaust system. Injecting cool oil into the exhaust changes the exhaust's internal temp and pressure. The noticeable effect is the immediate change in RPMs (and of course, the awesome thick smoke). At higher RPMs, the pressure in the exhaust increases to the point where some of the exhaust gasses are pushed back into the engine, combined with the new fuel/air mixture coming in from the carb, and re-burned in the combustion chamber. So, not all of the baby oil is being flashed into white smoke by the high exhaust temp. Some is burning inside the engine. It's doubtful that this would be very harmful to the engine. 20 ounces in one minute is a lot of oil, but only a percentage of that makes it into the combustion chamber.
They could possibly find a "sweet spot" far enough from the wet band to prevent reversion of the oil into the cylinder, but still hot enough to smoke. It wouldn't prevent temperature induced pressure change, but may help with baby oil contamination in the cylinder. For those who want a basic visual here is a link upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/52/Arbeitsweise_Zweitakt.gif
Its also most likely causing a lean condition at partial throttle because of how he describes the raise in the RPM . 2 strokes are quite picky when it comes to exhaust modifications and as you know the expansion chamber is critical. The scavenging effect is tied directly to moving the air/fuel mix through the transfer ports. I hate to be the safety Nazi but this is definitely not something to just blindly go and do. It could easily lead to fouling a spark plug or something worse like a engine seizure in flight. Definitely not something you want to try for the first time in the air etc.
@@Two-StrokeLife I agree.. the temp at the end of the header pipe is probably just as hot as it is in the middle of the pipe..move the fitting towards the end of the exhaust..
I can hear your RPMs go down when you hit the smoke....never noticed it instill you talked about it in the video. Also very informative video Tucker....good job and safe flying!!!!
Tucker, when drilling exhaust pipes or thin sheet metal don't use normal drill bits use a Unibit stepped bit. They prevent break through grabbing, rough edges and possible pipe damage.
Over here in the uk you use to be able to get strawberry sented 2 stroke oil, if you just got the scent and added it to your baby oil, you could do scented smoke!!!
When you shoot oil before expansion chamber to your exhaust it changes characteristics because that chamber is where 2 stroke makes that little extra power, try to stick it after chamber in place where it comes to final diameter of your pipe, exhaust gases there are bit cooler and has much higher velocity. Also you should try diesel fuel, when you use oil it will eventually flood your silencer so it will be soaked with unburnt oil.
Tucker, try vegetable glycerin, its pure, clean and smokes like HELL!! Thats what vapers use to produce huge clouds. They also use it in night clubs and so on
Have you ever debated adding smoke/oil dye to the baby oil you are using? If it is a quirky color people won't think you are crashing, plus it looks amazing!!
was waiting to learn about your smoke system. I am almost complete with installing smoke system on my PPG. I'm using waste vegetable oil. sky smells like french fries. hahaha. I totally enjoy your videos Tucker!!
I'd add that 2 strokes are quite picky when it comes to exhaust modifications. The shape of the expansion chamber affects the engines tuning and spraying oil in it does a lot more on a 2 stroke than what it would to a 4 stroke engine.2 strokes use the scavenging effect of the exhaust so prolonged use could cause some serious issues. Especially if it makes it run lean. Chances are that's why Tucker's increased RPM at partial throttle. If he ran it too long at that load it could lead to a seizure or scored piston etc and that's why he uses it in bursts most of the time. I'd recommend testing it and checking to be sure it's not running too lean before going crazy with it. Luckily for Tucker it sounds like it causes it to run too rich at wide open throttle.
@@TuckerGott thanks for the reply and sorry to be the "safety freak" . But I wanted to put it out there. Also thanks for showing the nice side of Jersey and if you're ever down the southern end hit me up. I fly out of Cape May and have a big tire Maule M4. It's not the flying cowboys by any stretch but nonetheless there's some cool sandbars to play at during low tide.
Yep - piping is everything in a 2-stroke. You can make docile engines become fire breathing monsters that will just about dislocate your shoulders with acceleration, on snowmobiles, or multi-cylinder motorcycles, with the right pipes and jetting to match. 👍
Be sure your baby oil is "Paraffin Based". Plant based may build up in your exhaust. I looked at the data sheet for the smoke sold from aircraft spruce for OVER $50 per gallon and noted the base is paraffin oil.
I have no idea if it would work but could you add food coloring to the oil to make colored smoke ? could be a fun little experiment if it doesn't mess up the pump
FIRST: PRAISE: Great cinematography Tucker! SECOND: QUESTION? Would it be possible to add color to the smoke? Maybe by adding a bottle of food coloring dye? Just curious. THIRD: REQUEST: How about some sky writing in smoke? Can you write "Jaclyn" without crashing?
air shows are always full of mosquitoes or they are when I'm there so I would suggest a little citronella oil mixed in there. so if you're going to make smoke you really should use either a stainless exhaust or titanium because of the corrosive effects that soot has on steel
I would def like to watch u in jersey sometime. I’m saving up for one and I would like to come check it out firsthand sometime. I’m not far away. In fact I might have seen u or someone else while I was on 95 south the other day
I wonder if you could mix the baby oil with some dye to create coloured smoke? I know the Red Arrows use some dye with diesel but the exhaust temps are probably 10x higher.
I'm pretty sure the reason it messes with engine performance is that some of the baby oil sneaks into the cylinder right before the power-stroke and becomes part of the fuel mixture. Not sure if it has any other implications. I mean, two-strokes like some oil in their fuel anyways... But maybe not lavender and aloe :P
tucker would vegetable glycerine work the same stuff they use in vape liquid or even vape liquid might work get a flavoured one that would smell real nice too then
Your videos are super motivational! I really want to try this now. I am at the "It's so cool!" stage. I'm retired military with very fixed income. I have worked fighters, attack planes and helicopters as a mechanic since I was 17. There are aircraft that are far easier to repair, maintain than others and are more reliable. The A-10, for instance, was super easy to fix and very reliable if you didn't baby it or ignore it. Can you recommend a paramotor that falls into that description? I would be more interested in cross country flying once I get comfortable with gear and ability. Any advice would be awesome! Thanks!
It may not be legal. But just for shits and grins. Try using automatic transmission fluid. Back in the seventies, we used it in our hot rods the same way you use mineral oil. It makes tons of smoke.
Have you done any research for yourself independently? You do understand that chem trails is a well documented thing that has been applied to our skies for many decades now. It Is Not A Theory, it is fact that chemicals and metals are sprayed into our atmosphere sometimes creating "contrails", again this is admitted science. Look up how many tons of Silver Iodide has been intentionally sprayed into the atmosphere to manipulate clouds/weather? Isn't it like 10's of thousands of tons? This weather manipulation is under the guise of many names and hidden from us in plain sight (only recently have grade school textbooks added con-trails to the cloud sections of books, it is insane).
There a back stroke in the pipe so it injects a air/fuel mixture that goes into the header then back up through the exhaust port and combusting. So in theory your sucking baby oil back into the cylinder even a small amount would definitely effect performance.
hey Tucker just gott my shirts in the mail...I'm wearing my Vitruvian " Paramotor" Man shirt right now! Very comfortable...Just had a thought...you could get a job where you spray for Mosquito's with the smoke system if the TH-cam thing dries up!!! LOL
Tucker buddy, that pipe looks awfully close to the exhaust. What type of pipe are you using? I'm trying to put together a smoke system but I'm worried the heat from the exhaust will melt a rubber pipe
Please excuse my ignorance, but I'm curious. Instead of drilling a hole in the wall of your exhaust, why not spray a thin mist into the tip? Similar to what jet based aerobatic teams often do. Obviously, that's a jet exhaust versus a little 2 or 4 stroke, but is it hot enough to smoke baby oil or commercial smoke oils used in theatrical hazers etc?
So what's the flow rate of that pump? That's gotta be like a 400 gph to move 20oz that fast, I'm sure the Venturi effect from the exhaust gasses probably pull it in faster as well.
Your exhaust a shaped that way being bigger in the middle and smaller on the ends because it acts as somewhat of a turbocharger. So when you add oil it will get in your combination chamber. These also alternative smoke machines that are less invasive
@@TheTropicalViking they have ones that don't go into your exhaust. Think of them like a vape with a fan. They have an atomizer and ignite own fluid. it's all pretty self-contained. If you've ever seen a thermal fogger it's pretty much that but smaller
