    I've been flying Paragliders for a while and always wondered what it would be like to build and fly an RC full-size full-scale drone paraglider thing, so this was the time to do it!
    It's a pretty simple construction but after a few techniques were ironed out it worked surprisingly well!

      The possibilities of using paragliding for science and research are amazing. ie. My personal wing weighs 3.4kg and carries 105kg.. no aircraft in the world can do that payload ratio, and it fits in a backpack.. I did this autonomous paraglider to demonstrate that a pendulum stable aircraft is a perfect thing to drop from high altitudes. wide riser to naturally untwist.... when a paraglider over-speeds... it just collapses, it doesnt rip the wing off. We did controlled spirals.. fly stright then more spirals to show FAA we could descend through airspace if needed.

    Great man, just great!
    I've flown paragliders for 30 years now, and always had this "dream" of RC-controlling a full size PG, but never even attempting to pull it off (always realising it would take much more than just quickly moving a couple servos over to a harness...)
    Thanks for satisfying my RC-PG dream, so that I didn't have to make a fool of myself or injure somebody!

  • @cs9260
    @cs9260 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    I have a similar unit I made 15 years ago (before TH-cam was popular). I used a sitting mannequin torso, so the unit could be strapped into any paraglider harness(adds weight). Heavy duty Futaba r/c sailboat winch servos with individual battery packs were used. They attached to two retractable dog leashes mounted at the shoulders. This made the control lines super tidy. The servos are capable of 6 revolutions and are powerful enough for full stalls and acro at max load. It's much easier to fly when the servo returns to a zero point when the sticks are released (hands up). The speed bar required quite a powerful servo made from a modified cordless drill. FPV was later added as well as a r/c vario. It was cool flying it through Fatshark googles. Eventually a r/c brushless motor and folding prop were added for launch and sustained flight (it also added weight). It worked best with XXS gliders.
    Can't wait to see your next version! Hope this helps!

    I see this is an older project now, but there's a another improvement it needs, apart from the ones you mentioned. The servos need a measurement loopback so they produce pull length proportional to the joystick input. That's typically done with multi-turn potentiometers, but there might be ready-made multi-turn servos. Anyway, great job, keeping costs down on POC projects is art!

    Love it !! :) . Couple of thoughts (that you've probably already considered :) )
    Winch servos for RC sail boats seem ideal for this and use "eyelet" holes to guide the lines to the pulley wheel to avoid the lines slipping of the sides, also setting the pulley wheels much lower down or take the brake handles off for extended travel, great work though :)

    Now with AI and other modules, perhaps taking one from a drone, you might be able to get it to "Auto-hover" or "Auto-Navigate," pre-program destinations, etc.
    Also I would add in an emergency feature that if it detects a battery or servo failure, it will go into a slow downward spiral mode, ensuring it wont accidentally fly away on you.
    Was referred to you via Sam Holmes Sailing 6/25/23.
