Nik Nocturnal \m/ A video explaining the difference between modes and scales would be hugely appreciated. I was suprised to discover, through your examples, that I lean towards different modes while jamming than I first thought. Leads me to think that my idea of modes being a way to compartmentalize scales might be inaccurate.

Mozart's Symphony no.25 starts out in harmonic minor. Vivaldi's Winter allegro non molto is entirely or almost entirely in harmonic minor iirc. Any baroque or classical era piece in minor you find is going to be, if not fully, partly in harmonic minor.

@@joaoneno4067 The major scale is also known as the Ionian mode. Starting on the second note of the major scale makes it into the Dorian mode, then on the third note of the scale would make it the Phrygian mode, on the 4th note, Lydian mode and so on. It's basically the major scale, just starting on different degrees.

Synyster gates has a huge background in blues and jazz, and he is very vocally open about the influence it has on his music, so yeah that is exactly how his guitar style is haha.

Phrygian Dominant - Arabian/Egyphian vibe
Aeolian - Emotionally dark
Mixolydian - Groovy
Lydian - Dreamy
Ultralocrian - Unstable and diminished
Ionian - Happy

That was The Scnitzel my man! I’ve been looking for ways that Locrian is used since most people disrespect it who don’t understand metal. Solos with a flat fifth are just diabolical AF when played over power chords (non-stop perfect fifths). Yours was fantastic! Anyway the song The Evil has Landed by Testament, how much of that is played with Locrian? Certainly the verses right?
Double Harmonic Major is my favorite. It's just major (Ionian) but with two augmented seconds, (like the one in harmonic minor, hence the name harmonic). It sounds like Phrygian dominant but better in my opinion. It's like a dissonance that never truly resolves but is pleasant enough that it isn't unusable like Locrian usually is.

Modes are simple enough that you don't need a metaphor to learn what they are at a basic level.
Your major scale is
WWHWWWH
Where W is a whole interval and H is a half interval. Major scale is the ionian mode, or the first mode if you aren't a dumb nerd. If you "shift" sequence, you get a mode.
WHWWWHW
For example is another mode, Dorian. Notice it's just the major scale "shifted" to the left.
You can figure out the rest.

@@drumilo8814 there are 12 notes in the western chromatic scale. A thru G with a sharp/flat between every note besides B and C, along with E And F. So it goes: A, A sharp/B flat, B, C, C sharp/D flat, E, F, F sharp/G flat etc etc
A whole step would be from A to B and a Half step would be C to C sharp.
For the lydian one you could have just played any Angel Vivaldi song ever

Basic idea as I know it is this,
Mode = Pattern of steps,
Scales = pattern of notes.
They can blend together, but they're different.

I think Aeolian is the best if you have to stay in one mode. If you can mix, in metal I think minor pentatonic, mixolydian, and locrian then transitioning into aeolian for some emotion is my favorite. Phrygian is cool too but it gets overused imo.
You're right Phrygian is starting to be very overdone. It will end up like the minor blues scale during the 90s.

I would love an explanation on how to change root modes ( forgive me if that’s nonsense) in a solo and switch the chord progression appropriately. I find if I just noodle away in aeolian it gets dull after a bit.

After I fully understood Modes (2 years ago) I realized I wrote just about all my riffs in Lydian and Dorian. How I learned and understood Modes was the chords for each. I had known all the scales for years but didn't know how to use them.

I've always been curious what modes the guitarists of BTBAM tend to harp on... It's obviously a mixture of a couple at least but I feel like their overall feel, at least on their earlier albums was very similar.
