Unseld showed up for work every night and did 3 things as well as anyone who ever played the game: rebound, set picks and throw the outlet pass. He could be called Mr. Intangible.
Rest in Peace Wes Unseld, I always had respect for him as a Basketball Player. He was 6ft 7 guarding guys that were 7ft 2 , he had the tenacity to guard a guy like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and do a good job at keeping him off the boards.
Indeed. I went to his high school, still remember passing his photo & the 2 state 'ships he won every morning freshman year. He looked like a super hero.
LazlosPlane He was 6”7 with shoes. That is considered undersized today. Much more so in the era that he played. Offense was run through bigs in the post back then.
@@LazlosPlane During the course of Unseld's career, he was about 3.5" shorter than the average NBA center. So it's fair to say that he was undersized in that respect despite his being somewhat heavier than the average center during that time. Height difference was (and to some extent still is) most impactful at the position he played, as rebounding and shot-blocking were primary components of success at center.
I'll never forget the outlet passes to the spinning, juking Earl 'the Pearl' Monroe. Fun to watch. If someone on the other team wasn't backpedaling on a missed shot, they gave up an easy crip shot to Baltimore. Thanks for the memories Wes.
Who either came from Wilson sy or this this video just popped in your recommendation at the right moment? Btw rip wes unseld probably a underappreciated legend 🙏🙏
Robert Parrish used to talk about playing 'the man's game.' No fluff, nothing fancy, just guys beating the hell out of each other in the paint for 48 minutes. Wes Unseld epitomized 'the man's game.' So sad to hear one my childhood basketball heroes left us today, June 2, 2020. This comes from a Celtics fan, but I still say thanks for the great memories, Wes. You could play on my team any day.
That's crazy, did you see Love at the desk with Shaq and Chuck after Game 3 yesterday? CWebb made a dig at Chuck for admiring Love's outlet passing by imitating Chuck with the line: "only Wes Unseld passes like that" It's actually the reason I came to this video. Mind blown.
Wes Unseld did a lot of things well and was one of the best rebounders and outlet passers in history. He did set a jarring, solid pick and he also had a soft touch so he could hit a mid range jumper if the defense doubled the ball handler. Kevin Love modeled his rebounding and outlet passing skills off of Wes and Love has been one of the best outlet passers in the NBA for years. Wes may not have been a great shot blocker but the played solid defense and nobody was backing Wes down into the paint. RIP
Barkley had more versatility: Better j, more ups! But he was not a 5! He was a 4! Wes was a straight 5 position, and as solid of a dude in the middle as there ever was! NO ONE sealed the paint with a big ass like Wes! And NO ONE threw that outlet pass like him!
@@glenroyburnside6241 YOU'RE AN IDIOT, if you think Wes's era wasn't as good as Barkelyes which began a very watered -down, no defense, three-point shooting, one-on-one bullshit basketball.
You're right, he had a big growth spurt, I think between his soph and junior years - I think it was bobby knight who described him as 'some fat kid who ran like the wind.' Barkley was amazing...
Only 7 players in NBA history to average 1000 or more rebounds a year throughout their careers--Wilt, Russell, Elvin Hayes, Wes Unseld, Bob Pettit, Nate Thurmond and Walt Bellamy.
@AceroySangre Nah, Barkley was 6'4" Barkley carried a lot of his weight in his legs, and butt. When he was younger, he use to jump the fence over, and over again to build his legs.
Unseld has already stated he was a little over 6'5 - he shrunk throughout his career, first listed at 6'8 (not even close) than 6'7 (the smallest he was ever listed at). Wes was a beast, one of the greatest centers of all time.. Barkley probably as good as Unseld (or better, because he was a natural scorer, which Unseld was not) however Barlley only played center in college, not against guys 6 inches taller than him.. Unseld, Greatness.
Big ups to Wes Unseld! A man from Newburg here in louisville that became one of the 50 greatest Nba players! Now it's looking like Rajon Rondo could be the next great Ville player!
He was my great uncle, I have proof for people who don’t believe. He has two kids but on Google it says he has one, his brother was his best friend and is my grandpa. They had a pet monkey and parrot as children. This man WAS my great uncle
@SamuelMoralesJr hey, I agree, all around Charles was superior - I give Unseld some extra props because he had to go head to head with guys like Chamberlain, Russel, Kareem, Reed and other guys who were at least 6 inches taller every night - Barkley prob pound for pound best rebounder in NBA history, however too many people forget how a guy like Unseld sacrificed his body and his game for the team - both all time greats, but Unseld deserves to be remembered ")
@juvserr probably? Barkley is way better than Wes Unseld. Wes Unseld provided an anchor for his team. Barkley has much more skill than Wes Unseld. Nobody seen a player like Barkley in the NBA the. Wes Unseld offered toughness. Sometimes toughness is needed in a team. He was a very good rebounder though, but Barkley was a very good rebounder, and much more than that.
Wes Unseld had the greatest outlet passes in the transition game!!!
RIP Wes -- Still have vivid memories of watching those late 70's Bullet teams on TV with my Father. The '78 Chip was magical.
RIP Wes Unseld. before my time (1982) but always a name i heard growin up. just payin my respects to the legend!

RIP Wes. Arguably the greatest undersized center to ever play.
Indeed. I went to his high school, still remember passing his photo & the 2 state 'ships he won every morning freshman year. He looked like a super hero.
UNDERSIZED? Are you on drugs? Just because he wasn't 7'0 feet does not make you automatically "undersized." What an ill-informed statement.

@@GornishtHelfen That is a very narrow (and inaccurate) description of Unseld. The man was HUGE. In SIZE. Below average in height, yes, but HUGE.
Great player - one that most people did not appreciate. Glad I got to see them play back in their heyday.
Tears falling down my face today👊🏾
Wes, you were and will always be, my Hero 😢.

This is the type of player coaches craved for their team..

i watched him played the most when the bullets came to new york in the 1970's. loved his style of play.****

Did you know Kevin loves middle name is Wes? Named after of course wes unseld. Kinda funny since Kevin love is popular for great long outlet passes
That's crazy, did you see Love at the desk with Shaq and Chuck after Game 3 yesterday? CWebb made a dig at Chuck for admiring Love's outlet passing by imitating Chuck with the line: "only Wes Unseld passes like that"

It's because his father, Bob, and Unseld were teammates and good friends.

That might cause of his father.
the best fro in the history of the NBA!
r.i.p Wes Unseld. Man among men and boys.
Old school NBA players said one of his under rated quality's was he had a ample rump that would box you out
I loved watching Wes in the 70s
The NBA of the 70.s🏀🏆
bullets legend
Farewell, Legend!! 🕊
I have Wes rated #19 on the all-time greatest players list. Averaged a double double for his entire career & tremendously undersized.
Outstanding player
Wes Unseld was what we like to call "country strong". Probably never lifted a weight in his life.

The Scatman you right but Wes’s era wasn’t as good Barkley’s but both are considered the greatest little big men
@@glenroyburnside6241 bob mcadoo, kareem, wilt, russel, hayes, walton, malone, sikma, etc. Unselds era was for sure just as good.

Richard Thaxton What about Rodman?
Leo Datur, Nope, Rodman had 11,000+ rebounds in 14 years. He would need 14,000 in 14 years to average 1,000 rebounds a year throughout his career
crazy to think of, a 6'5 center/power forward
TheMrMurcielago 6'7...
doubt it, wes was faster and more agile, while barkley was beast and strong bruiser

Nah, he's an early version of Barkley. He was listed at 6'7 but actually closer to 6'5. Barkley was listed at 6'6 but he was actually closer to 6'4.
Wes Unseld was a great player but i still cant understand how did he get NBA MVP award in 1969.

Barkley is 6'5'.i saw his standing with Pippen and he wasnt more then 2 inches shorter than Pippen. Pippen was 6'7'.

Chuck Hayes of the Houston Rockets, is the modern day Wes Unseld.
