This doc fails to mention the referees would call fouls on my man Darryl that they would not call on Shag years later. The NBA had a vendetta against Darryl and that was enough to make him do things the way he did.Maybe he lived up to his potential maybe he didn't,but l venture to say he had fun without being mean to anyone and in that respect he lived up to GOD's expectations and to me and GOD that is living up to his potential. When it is all said and done basketball is a game and my guy Darryl played the game quite well,if you know what I mean.rip my Brother you are loved and appreciated.

Met Darryl in Spring 1984 at the Burger King in Lugano, Switzerland when I was a 17 year-old high school student there, his hands enveloped mine like mittens. He was exceptionally kind to me as a minute skinny Swiss basketball kid - him and the rest of the NJ Nets team who were there (Jeff Turner, Micheal Ray Richardson, Otis Birdsong and coach) signed my "the Prince" book by Macchiavelli I was reading at the time. Will never forget his kindness, I didn't speak a word of English back then - I was in awe, at the time the largest human I had ever seen in person... They had crossed the border from an exhibition game they were playing in nearby Milano. We exchanged addresses and he replied to my letter, he lived in Secaucus NJ at the time - will never forget. Been in the US for 35 years now and I wish we could have cultivated our friendship! Hope he would be proud of me now as I was of him.

Probably not as thick as Shaq, but yeah. Thick. Shaq could run the court, but not for long. Dawkins was non-stop. He was thick, but he was agile and light on his feet. Closer comparison might be a bigger Carl Malone, before Carl Malone. All the advantages of being big, and none of the disadvantages.

    • @sirrjazz734
      @sirrjazz734 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@garycollier6950 It wasn't that Darryl made stupid mistakes, it was that the NBA was very much ANTI-YOUTH in those days.
Darryl was much smarter & more skilled than the youth of today.
Darryl was playing for a 76ers team that was LOADED with talented & skilled players & he had to find a way to co-exist with them.
Had he been a rookie in the mid/late 80's or the early 90's he'd fit right in.
If he'd ran with Allen Iverson, they'd won championships with the 76ers.
The NBA was very conservative until the ABA players came in.
Darryl was just ahead of his time.

He was a talented player, but he should have gone to college for at least two years. He had a lot going for him and certainly had the raw talent for the NBA, but he lacked the essential skills to play at the pro level, which was why he never made all-pro during his entire career. Had he went to college and developed his skills, he would have had a far more prolific NBA career.

Out of Orlando Evans High School, Big Dawk played at the local playground there, Lorna Doone park. Played with & against him and his brothers, Chico, Mitch & Troy. All good ballers. Once he got a rebound on the left side of the goal, down low. The ball was right in my face and put my hand on it. Big Dawk went up with no ball, as I blocked it out of his hands. He called "foul" and when he came down, he looked me in my eyes and said , "That wasn't a foul, that was rape!". He was with the 76's at the time and at 5'10", eventhough it was a clean block, I wasn't gonna argue with the home town hero. "OK, your ball, Big Dawk". LOL

Chocolate Thunder made hoops fun… he totally lived up to HIS potential. He was feared on the court… but when you have Dr. J and one other guy wanting to be “the one” there is no room for Chocolate Thunder to be… but he was anyway.

Didn't get the head cold/shaved head joke. His leaps must not have come with an IQ........if you look up the stats, he doesn't seem too interested in anything but scoring, although his shooting percentage is so high that he'd be worth it to have on the floor.

DD one of them dudes you just gotta let be himself and give him the freedom to develop. If he woulda went somewhere with a more solid system in his early days he couldve been on shaqs level of dominance. RIP.

He was on Shaqs level. The 70's were much different for a black man with the media, than they were in the 90's when Shaq came in.

He had some handles, he would do well in today's game, like DeMarcus Cousins. Players then had to fit into certain rolls, they wasn't allowed to freelance like today's players.

@@ronsapp4780 Oh okay,, thanks I was a kid during those times and my memory escapes me. This series introduced me to televised NBA games. Before that, I had never even seen basketball on television. Fell in love with Dr. J after this series. It's funny because before I even watched a game on television, I remember that Dr. J was a superstar because he was always on television commercials for his Converse shoes (which I have to admit that as a child I did own a pair). I can still see him on those commercials flying through the air and the song playing, "hey Dr. J. where you get those moves". I vaguely remember Dunleavy even playing on th 6ers during that time. I know right after this series, I started collecting basketball cards. I am trying to remember if I had the Dunleavy 6ers card. I know I had Bibby, Collins, Mix, Dr. J, Caldwell Jones. I'm not sure if I got Dr. Dunkenstein card. I really remember Dunleavy from his Rockets days with Sampson and Malone and them but I vaguely remember him with the 6ers. That is why I was asking if he started. Thanks again!

    • @huehnerfickers

College has nothing to do with it. Work ethic is simply in your nature. e.g. workhorses such as Moses and KG never went to college yet lazy bastards such as Benoit Benjamin and Joe Barry Carrol did...
