Porsche Taycan: InnoDrive Adaptive Cruise Control System Tested in Heavy Rain

  • In this video test out the Adaptive Cruise Control system, in combination with InnoDrive (intelligent speed control), across a variety of roads in heavy British rain.
The combination of camera and radar works extremely reliably, and while it's far from the "smartness" of the Tesla Autopilot system, the adaptive cruise component is very reliable with silky smooth control inputs.

It was finicky for me as well but finally after some hours, Active Lane Keeping did activate after purchase.
In short, it’s a must have for me. But it isn’t nearly as good as Tesla’s (we have also a Model 3). It feels like ping pong between 2 virtual borders within the lane, which is unsettling if you let go of the steering wheel even for a few seconds.
In other words, I’d still buy it as it helps massively for long distance driving. But I really wish it were as reassuring as the Tesla’s. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the information! Pinned your comment so people comparing with Teslas will be able to spot it.

The "ping pong" effect you experienced may have been caused by Lane Keep Assist instead of Active Lane Keeping. When using Lane Keep Assist without Active Lane Keeping enabled, the driver is mainly responsible for keeping the vehicle in the lane. Active Lane Keeping steers the vehicle in its lane without driver input except for the driver having to touch the steering wheel every 5 seconds or so to prevent warnings. According to my 2022 Cayenne owners manual, Active Lane Keeping has a learning feature. If the driver wants to use Active Lane Keeping most effectively, he should manually position the vehicle as closely as possible in the center of a lane for several seconds so that the relative position in the lane will be learned. Active Lane Keeping in my Cayenne works extremely well to keep it centered in its lane. While I prefer to keep both hands on the steering wheel, I could probably drive for many miles with only a finger touching the steering wheel.

Nice review, I also have PID and would agree that the only time it slows down is for pretty noticeable curves. It will generally take curves at what the car is able to maintain grip on. And with 285 mm tires it’s able to maintain grip on a lot of things. With 47k miles on the car and over 30k on Innodrive I Really enjoy it.
I noticed you were criticizing, the passing in the slow lane, in the United States you can pass in any lane and some pass on the shoulder. But I guess that’s why we broke with the Empire. 😂

    Hi.
It's fully correct, our model S from 2019 is since deactivated radar nervous and have more phantom breaking issues as with the radar.
It's annoying to drive with AP on roads outside of the city's. In city's its unusable!
Also the automatic acceleration after slowing down is not smooth and stepping every 5 to 6 km/h so you're not following the fleet and all back traffic is getting nervous about your driving.
So Porsches InnoDrive don't make all the things a Tesla can do but working more smooth and understandable.
    Thanks for your brilliant video.
I think Porsche is working very hard to get it better in this year for the 2024 models at august/september 2023.
BTW, I ordered a Taycan Cross Turismo 4S with a lot of options now including InnoDrive and all the stuff you can get for the drive train. 👍

Porsche has two totally different lane assists. One is LKA, which is a wothless system that pingpongs you left and right, really probably mor intended to warn a driver AND actually move vehicle from lane msrker toward but will NOT stop the vehicle fom going all the way to other side.
ALK s Active Lane KEEP is amazing. It will keep your Taycan in the middle of your lane, almost as good as Tesla. You can just lightly rest your hand on wheel, and the car will drive you in highway traffic jam or highway driving. I believe it ALWAYS comes with Innidrive.

I have a Tesla and use the basic autopilot sometimes, along with it's occasional phantom braking. I like tech and am all for progress but perhaps these systems aren't that different to auto-targeting on a shotgun, and I doubt that will get designed and approved any time soon.

so if i want to purchase these services after factory , does it make sense to just get the innodrive or should i be purchasing the LKA along with it?

I’ve purchased active lane keeping over a month ago and it’s still not on my car - Porsche are aware but are in no hurry to try and resolve the issue. Any issues with downloads are handled in Germany, not the UK.

Definitely seems like quite a common issue if you read through the forums. Hope you got there in the end!

Buying new car without any automation is not an option nowadays. My 992 delivered in August 20 and innodrive was getting launched for MY21 cars so I have only adaptive cruise control that I use daily. Takes the stress out of maintaining speed especially with average speed cameras on M3 and M4
