Why do some Brits insist on incorrectly pronouncing the Porsche name? It's pronounced por-sha not porsh. As a Porsche enthusiast it makes me cringe everytime it's mispronounced. I doubt I'm alone in this as I've heard the same complaint from my club friends.

It's funny you say Porsche has never built electric cars before, but Ferdinand Porsche built the world's first electric car over 100 years ago and built hybrid diesel-electric tanks in WW2, he was fascinated by electric power so have the Taycan is just coming full circle and I think he would have loved what they have done and are continuing to do with electric vehicles.

What Robert so sensibly points out is... under normal circumstances. nobody buys any car based on a single feature. In this case, you buy a Porsche for it's road behaviour, not it's fuel consumption or range.
I see no criticism of Tesla in this, or a criticism of any other electric car. Those who talk of "Tesla killers" seem to miss this major fact of vehicle purchasing. The sooner discussion of electric cars gets away from people trying their hardest to tear down the whole idea of an electric car, and Tesla in particular, the sooner we might all be able to be able to allow them to be very much a small facet in the background of our lives.

I drove 700 miles in under 24 hours in that car, and it was completely effortless. The fast charging stations in NY and the Electrify America network made it so easy to do. The Taycan was spectacularly comfortable and competent. It also has the best "Guess O Meter" of any EV I have driven, which made the journey that much easier.

People who don't own EVs often focus on how long it takes to FULLY charge from empty to full which is a terrible way to look at charging on road trips.
You won't do it that way once you own one. It's a known fact that all EVs charge much faster from 0-50% than they do from 50-100%. The key is to stop more frequently for shorter durations approaching 0% charge rate. Most people factor to arrive at the next charger w/ around 10% left (those who are brave go below that) and then charging only enough to get to the next stop. If you do it this way, with the newer charge technology, you can expect stops less than 10-15 minutes which will get you another hour or two down the road. After a short period you find that this is a FAR better way to travel on long journeys. Far more enjoyable, relaxing and you get to enjoy more of our great country.
Also, everything I just described will make up less than 5% of your total time driving it. The other 95%+ will just be plugging in at night when you get home and always leaving on a "full tank" w/o ever having to worry about getting gas again. You'll quickly realize how stupid it is to HAVE to go out of your way once or twice a week to stand outside in the rain pumping gas. What a stupid way to go through life.
While it's not perfect it's FAR better than ICE for passenger vehicles for 99% of people out there. Sadly, most of them have no idea that EV would not only work fantastically for them but would improve their day-to-day life in noticeable way... environmental debates aside. They're just better cars in every imaginable way. I'm sure the transition is similar to that of going from horseback riding as a necessity to get from point A to point B to cars the first time around. It really is that much different and makes ICE cars seem so antiquated in power, noise, smell.... just like a horse.

I know it falls short of a Tesla Model S on the range and infrastructure point right now but honestly there is not a world where I choose a Tesla over a Taycan. It’s a delightful car that is super important at convincing die hard petrol heads that EVs can indeed be fun. Just think what the cheaper RWD models will be like or the even faster GT line! Also do you really want to bet against VW catching up on infrastructure. I’d bet they are on parity with Tesla sooner than you think

Wait a mo. As a pukka old-school petrol-head I've got a niggling negative observation to make about EVs in general and this Porsche Trashcan in particular.
I drove rally cars in the Group-B era - only as an amateur, but I prepared cars, twice drove support vehicles for privateers in the Safari (and finished both times) and did a lot of club rallying in England.
So I know whereof I speak when I ask, "Whither Colin Chapman and his philosophy of 'Simplify and add lightness'?"
This car weighs 2,880 kilos. Say it slowly. Savour those syllables. It's insane. It's a Porsche, not a brick-built porch. Robert says it costs more than he paid for his house, but I bet it weighs almost as much, too.
This car is telling people that being packed with lardy extras is somehow necessary and desirable. Plenty of power, yep, but it sets a bad example of what performance [sic] EVs could and should be about.
Discarding an old, heavy, noisy, messy, complicated, inefficient, high-maintenance internal combustion engine and transmission in favour of battery power should be a good thing, but look at the cost in terms of renewables and energy efficiency. It's absurd. It's replacing the Merkin dream of chrome, an iron chassis built out of RSJs, a big block V8 and 'automatic everything' with a mountain of high tech bloatware. And automatic everything.
    So much for progress.
This car - like all EVs - would be a great deal more impressive if it weighed 50% less. Imagine the mileage. I don't mean build it flimsy to give it artificially cool range figures (mentioning no names, hem hem), I mean don't load your cars with a ton of smart tech and energy-hungry goodies. That should be seen as a BAD thing.
I'm reminded of US manufacturers falling over themselves to produce bigger and bigger cars with gigantic engines and stupid kerbweights because consuming less and taking up less space on the road and in the world was seen as un-Constitutional and Communist and evil and cowardly and wrong. Well, conspicuous consumption is back, and it's lithium powered. Viva Canyonero.
Making it electric doesn't make it good.
Are EVs destined to become tomorrow's moronic muscle cars? Colin Chapman might be impressed by the technology, but I think he'd be appalled by its application.

Great work, such a well put together episode. Love the futuristic music.
45 kWh/100 mi ~ 2.2 mi/kWh which is appalling for a city car, but irrelevant for a performance vehicle for the disgustingly rich. Also, another great car producing no toxic fumes or ear blowing exhaust sound to cause nuisance in cities 🥳.

Alas, Bobby had to drive across the country to Essex because that's the only GridServe (so far) in the country. Definitely a positive sign, but I'd hold back on the celebrations until they've got a half-decent network of stations covering most of the UK, etc :D (I don't think Bobby went back to the point about the Superchargers at Membury, but iirc there's only a dismal pair of 50Kw chargers for non-Teslas there, as with most UK motorway stations, and a depressingly high chance they're not actually functioning)

@@logicalChimp you don't need to convince me I also ride a Zero SRF electric motorbike which is genius with everything cranked up 100%........oh 80 miles down to 5% and the public charger is Kaput...again! The Zero just needs the public chargers to be working basicly 90 miles range max, its great for a quick blast and back home. Im not up for the logistics of charging at 60 miles on plan A only to panic about plan B and panic panic plan C. I see GridServe as the answer and hopefully when they roll out a few more they will raise the bar, the only down side no more free leccy off Ecotricity pumps!

The way it gulped down fuel, not so much. The e-golf off the mark is just astonishing and into a roundabout at a tight lick is nifty. If there is an ID.R that comes out, now that would be something. The golf chassis is so good.

I have a 20 Bolt. The fastest I've see it charge is 53kw, but that is only below 35%, where the charge rate starts to reduce. I think by 55% of capacity the rate was about 45kw. The range estimates are nothing near accurate, and are mostly a shot in the dark. I just made a ~400 mile trip. The app showed 430 miles range before I started. It quickly dropped to 220 mile by time the car was started. I had to charge at about 150 miles. Even on the way back, after the 3rd change (not to full) the dash showed 126 of range and I had 83 miles to go. I arrived home with only 24 miles remaining. Somehow the range was off by nearly 20 miles in just 83, with hours of trip driving to calibrate on. I don't know what kind of engineer writes programs with so much inaccuracy. I can't imagine trusting autonomous driving from GM. The longer I have this car, the more I feel it is a POS.

Speed of charging will be a game changer. Important to us as we are in the 40% with no off road parking or charging, plus no charging at work. I still think the place for these fast chargers is at the out of town supermarket and shopping centres. Everyone has to buy food at some point! Go do your grocery shopping once a week, plug the car in at the car park, come back after doing your shopping and hey presto another weeks worth of fuel! It really is that simple isn't it?

Only 81.4KW/h. A long way short of 350! The first and last 20% do tend to charge at a slower rate, plus the battery would be hot from the long journey so the charge rate is reduced to protect the battery. Plus it is limited by local demand. Go back on a quiet day after a short journey and you might see closer to 350.
    At 14:49 you see he charged 1.221Kw in 54 seconds. (1.221/54)*3600 = 81.4KW/h

It feels like from the start Robert wants to showcase the charge rate and drives all this way only to find out it's not that great and decides not to say it as not to put the Porsche too much in a bad light. Though I do like the Porsche as it has a couple of things really going for it, but I think being open is important as some people might get a surprise if they purchase one and it is not to their expectations. I also understand that peak charge rate doesn't say much in how much time it takes to charge, so best would be to show the charge rate graph over SoC/time.

  • @tronderikbrekke8792
    @tronderikbrekke8792 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Great video. Just a couple of comments though
The battery pack in the Taycan has (like you also stated) a net capacity of about 83kWh, even if it has about 10 more full, you cannot charge it full. However Tesla doesn't do it like that, they allow you to utilize much more of it. And the pack you find in the P100DL (and the now Performance), and the Long range (Model S and X) for that matter, has about 98kWh net capacity. That is a lot more, that's 15kWh more capacity you can actually charge. So the big range difference is mostly due to that. And that's a big and important factor. Because the Porsche can be charged to 100% every singe day if you want to. While you can do that in the equivalent Teslas, it's not recommended, you will damage the battery pack doing so. And you're left with charging to something like 80% which gives you just about the same range as the Taycan. Now, when you're going on a long trip, you would of course charge the Tesla to 100%, and get the full range. And then it will obviously have an advantage over the Porsche.
The secondary reason the Porsche have a bit less range is those massive tires. The car you tested had 305mm rear tires, and 265mm front tires. Equivalent Model S would have 245mm front tires and 265mm rear tires. And that makes a big difference for an electric car. The Porsche is more aerodynamic but those tires bite it in the ass, in terms of range. And you get even more ass biting when you have to drive on a wet road like you did. I think you found the perfect day to show it's lowest range potential. On a warm summer day, you'll get 300 miles easily.
So for every day use, the range will not be a big difference. It's only when you have to go far you will get into a bigger difference. And then it's down to charging speed. And if you're going 300 miles, you need to charge both cars, and then you will use less time with the Porsche. Even if you're going to go twice that, you'll still use less time with the Porsche. Unless you get into a queue, or no chargers available and you need to do a detour. But more and more chargers will pop up in the future, and that should not be an issue.
The fastest range car will still be a Model 3 Long Range. With it's 250kWh charging potential, Tesla super charger network, and low consumption.
! And for reference I drive a Model S 100D at the moment, and I have a Taycan Turbo in delivery. I had a Model S P85+ before. And I have tested the Model S Performance (latest model) and the Model 3 Performance. That should be all the cars I've talked about !

Hi - excellent review and did consider this vehicle but ultimately purchased the 2021 RS6. My issue as the indicate is the charging network and applaud Tesla for its progressive decision to build a truly global charging network along side the sale of its vehicles. UK Government is of course promoting electric vehicles but do not understand the implications around charging availability. In large cities most housing is apartments, and will have no allocated parking or charging points so will have to use the rapid charging points and these will not be available for other users on extended journeys etc.
All new houses should be built with solar panels and 7kw or larger home charging points but will still not negate the apartment issue.
Will look again in 3 years and if charging is available at service stations etc will certainly buy an EV, but likely to be the Audi Etron GT when released.
Merry Christmas and keep safe in these uncertain times.
