Please let me know which video you like better. :)
Despite the subpar performance and editing of the two videos from 2023 (this video and • Vivaldi: Four Seasons ... ) They serve as a testament to my initial discovery of these instruments and my undying passion. These videos mark the starting point for my self-taught exploration of my favorite instruments: the accordion and harpsichord. As the channel evolves, we will continue to uncover and learn from fellow musicians, mentors, and professionals.

“Primera vez que escucho ese potente concierto solo en clavicordio, es magnífico, buenísimo Maestro Paul!!! Me gusta mucho que le hayas puesto notas, emociona más escuchar la música clásica con los comentarios del mismo solista, buenazo!! Saludos desde Lima” - เพลง
1052 is one of Bach's compositions that I adore for its dynamism, its verve, its relentless forward propulsion. I imagine, listening to this music, that I want to reach my destination although there are plenty of obstacles and distractions along the way, but the desire is one: not to stop, not to give up, not to be pushed aside, not to lose the desire to reach my goal. The clarity of your interpretation is, for me, like opening the clumped sheets in the book of life. Thank you.
I completely agree!! There seems to be MANY obstacles along the way, but he never stops going forward. Thank you for your kind words. I will say though, the video shows me playing the harpsichord for the second time ever. Since then I have gotten better at harpsichord technique and will definitely film the video again (with more ornamentation). I really appreciate you watching and your opinion on the video!! Do you have any other baroque favorites? :)
@@broquemusician Dear Artist (I don't know your name), I am all the more impressed with your playing and look forward to the next version. I am curious about the ornamentation, as this will likely add even more individuality and your own vision of the piece. I don't think my choice of favourite pieces from the Baroque period is in any way original. Since asked, I would put the Chaconne (from BWV 1004) on the pedestal, and I completely agree with Brahms' words "On one stave [...] the man writes a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful feelings." Bach dominates my selections (forms large and small - Passions, Mass in B minor, Goldberg var., Passacaglia etc etc etc), but also Handel (harpsichord suites that have recently accompanied me whatever I do, Coronation and Chandos Anthems, Messiah, etc etc etc), Vivaldi (RV 580 to give just one example), D. Scarlatti who so incredibly ingenious with his tunes and rhythms (K. 463, K.466, K.11, K.141, K.9, K.54, K.19, K.87, haha mostly minor, supposedly for the sense of yearning and longing). Almost anything that is chaconne/passacaglia in style embroidered with variations thrills me instantly - cf. Xavier Díaz-Latorre's performances of works by Biber or Visée or L'Arpeggiata's performance of Bertali's Ciaccona! The list of favs. is endless. And what are yours? [As a complete aside, and please don't take offence, because I'm writing this frankly, for some reason your crew cut and black attire fits your performance perfectly. I don't know, maybe because your whole demeanour is, I'm looking for words - 'objective', without useless fidgeting and mimicry? Or maybe it's the boyish youthfulness you bring to the music].
I always think that it has a very masculine drive to it.
this just might be the best comment ive ever read
@@gpsgps307 Hey, I was wondering if you had a chance to see my new version. th-cam.com/video/XpNP0cYcJPE/w-d-xo.html I would love to know which video you prefer. I also updated my youtube bio.
Your comment has made a huge impact on me; the community also loves your comments. I will be posting more videos soon and regularly. Thank you for all of your support and inspiration!
I have heard this concerto many ties, but this is the first time I have heard the harpsichord part without the orchestra. The harpsichord really is pulling the full weight of the melody in most of this movement, starting at the beginning (in the next movement, it pulls a lot of weight but doesn't start at the beginning).
I appreciate your support! I’m shocked this is the first time a lot of viewer have seen this piece as a solo. Aren’t there other videos of BWV1052 solo on TH-cam? haha.
@@broquemusician Could be, but I hadn't thought to search for the harpsichord part by itself instead of the whole performance.
Wrong. The harpsichord plays at the beginning of all three movements. The harpsichord plays in ALL the tutti sections of ALL movements. Google "BWV 1052 IMSLP" to find the score.
That left hand passage always kills me just before that cadenza break in the middle
that is the hardest oart of the piece so I completely understand. 10th degree jumps at full speed HAHA
WTF WAS THAT !
It's like having an orchestra in one instrument .. GOOD JOB ! ❤️
That is a huge compliment to me! I can’t wait to hear what you think of my Vivaldi concerto arrangement (have not filmed yet). It sounds even more like a band/orchestra since it’s on the accordion. Polyphony (multiple melodies layered on top of each other) is the main reason baroque is my favorite type of music. If you have any songs suggestions please let me know.
The keyboard is a universal instrument. My first piano teacher always said a pianist can reproduce any piece for orchestra.
I like baroque music
Bach has such presence. This is the 2nd night in a row i find myself listening to this.
I hope to play harpsichord full time to post more music and a better version of this song. I’ve only played harpsichord 3 times at the time of this video and I was not able to express everything I imagine with this piece since I wasn’t use to the action. I extremely appreciate your support!
Playing Bach keyboard concerto as though it was a piano sonata (was there even such a concept during Bach's time) is crazily difficult; somehow he pulled it off. Great effort! But you do need the string instruments, or another harpsichord (kind of like 1060) to do it right.
Very good job! I've heard this piece before, but I think this is my favorite version. I think it's because the microphone is close, it just sounds so "real", and you can really hear not only what's being played but also the instrument as well, and your playing is very good too, bravo!
I'm a sucker for all things harpsichord and mandolin. This deserves to be played at auditorium. 👍
Haha, thank you for your support. A storage unit will have to do for now until I have my own harpsichord to refine my technique. Then maybe I’ll play in an auditorium one day. I wish I discovered harpsichord earlier, this was my second time seeing one.
This is arena rock, man. Im blasting it in the car and don’t care what people think 😂
Honestly I wish someone would record more harpsichord solo versions of these concerti. Hogwood and Rousset did 1061”a” but that’s the only other I know of. Yes it’s missing some Bach, but it’s so cool to hear just the harpsichord. Thank you!!
I’m working to do this full time. Do u have any song suggestions? I also arrange and compose. :) thanks for your support!!
@@broquemusician So great. I think the "angry" ones sound great solo like this... but there are swaths of the happier 1053 and 1055 where the orchestra stops, so those are natural choices, but the one that started my lifelong love of Bach is 1054. I've always thought that would be so beautiful totally solo. :)
Also...the part at 2:30 that I call the "Knight Rider section" is my favorite moment in all of Bach keyboard. It's a joy to watch you play it and I'm sure it must be a thrill to play!
Brilliant ! Very well done, you should be proud man :)
Thanks for watching! I made a new version of this piece. Please let me know what version you like more. :) th-cam.com/video/XpNP0cYcJPE/w-d-xo.html
those voices are clean!
The voicing of my playing or the instrument (carefully shaving each bird quill plectra to the correct shape)?
Thanks for watching! What is your favorite piece?
Exelente tecnica. 🎶🎶🎶💯 Felicidades 🎈
I love the performance, and I'm so grateful the camera mostly stays put and lets us just watch your mastery, instead of constantly jumping and moving around.
I completely agree, I was almost tempted to leave it at one angle the entire video but it was a longer piece so I thought a few would be okay. I will say though, I may have to experiment with different camera angles since my next videos feature 2 voices on right hand and the conventional angle doesn't show case my arrangement (and fingers for the 2 voices) as clearly. It's going to be a huge debate in my head as to what angles and edits I should use for each type of instrument and composition. I REALLY appreciate your feedback! Have a good day.
Great job, loved hearing this without strings.
I completely agree. Thank you so much for watching!
Wdym all I hear are strings. Jk but it’s confusing whether harpsichord is considered a string or percussion instrument
@@acute1475why would a harpsichord be considered perc if it plucks? Perc’s whole deal especially with piano is that entails hitting
neither, its a keyboard instrument @@acute1475
Well done! Thanks for highlighting the harpsichord in this piece!
Its got its own unique sound and its a beautiful instrument. Its amazing to hear actually what Bach would have sounded like.
Loved the performance my friend. I bet Bach could just hear the music in his head then just write it down.
I appreciate your support! I’m working really hard to get my own harpsichord so I can post more videos! I never thought I would love harpsichords more than piano.
@@broquemusician I just love the sound of the harpsichord and I prefer it to the piano.

I’ve never heard this solo. What a robust composition
So much raw emotion from Bach in this concerto. Stormy and tempestuous. Great solo performance. Thank you.
Thank you so much! I will make sure to post more solo performances. What is your favorite Bach piece?
@@broquemusician It’s so hard to choose! I’m partial to the Well Tempered Clavier because of my background in piano. Or else I wouldn’t mind another harpsichord concerto! I’m sure whatever you upload will be great! Thanks for playing. 👍

Bella esecuzione. Bravo.
Excellent rendition. I really enjoyed your interpretation. I found myself whistling the string section @4:50.
What an accomplishment. That was fantastic!
I found myself riveted, transfixed, hardly able to blink,, because of the depth to which your musicianship.brings this work of J. S. Bach's to life. I have clicked the bell and selected to be notified if you are so kind as to upload another performance of such high quality. Many thanks. PS I believe that you could well add some period-correct ornaments.
Thank you for such kind words and encouragement. I quit music for 6 years and just got back into it last year. I hope to make videos full time. I specialize in composing and arranging music on many instruments, but I do prefer solo or duets.
Thank you for subscribing! I never imagined having so much support before I have even started (only two videos out). I am working on many other pieces however I will definitely redo this video since I have gotten better at harpsichord now and I agree that there should be more ornamentation.
I am mainly waiting on purchasing instruments right now since the other instruments were lend to me. I also am working on building a Hubbard French Double from scratch but this will take a while to complete. A kind lady in PA donated this kit to me as she is 4 years back logged with her other instruments and would not be able to complete the kit.

Fantastic. I never actually heard it on a harpsichord if you can believe it as it is one of my favourite pieces by Bach. But really enjoyed it as well as your commentary. I agreed with you on the favourite parts. Will subscribe to hear more!
I really appreciate your support, I will make sure to post another video soon. what is your favorite baroque piece?
Such a joy watch you playing this! This is a hard piece indeed but seems you're having a lot of joy playing it!
I'm working to make videos full time. I did have so much fun playing! I really appreciate your support!!!
The third movement is twice as hard as the first. Each passage is a new challenge
あまりの素晴らしい演奏に感動しました。リピートして聴いています。JAPANより。
My deepest thanks for this recording. Insane.
I appreciate your support. What is your favorite piece?
@@broquemusician this is definitely one of my favourite Bach keyboard pieces. I’d be very interested in hearing you place some Goldberg Variations on this instrument.
My favourite moment in this piece is probably that hand-crossing passage at 2:50 - 3:20. Bach’s creativity was absolutely off the chain.
@@JacobDTulio In the future, I am trying to build "pull down harpsichord pedals" which will allow me to play the viola melody while simultaneously playing the hand-crossing section at 2:50 - 3:20. This is how organists practiced their pedal work back in Bach's era where most people couldn't afford or access an organ.
Talent is off the charts, keep up the good work. Hope to get to your level one day
If I did have talent, I think it would be arranging or composing music (which I only discovered a few months ago). I quit music for 6 years and just got back into it a year ago. What is your music background and age? As long as you have unphased passion, qualified mentor/instructor, and solid basics, you will definitely get to my level and beyond. I am not a professional musician.
I hope to make TH-cam videos full time but first I am working on purchasing an instrument. I really appreciate your comment. Please never hesitate to ask for my help, advice, or opinion on any of your endeavours. If I cannot answer a question, I would be able to redirect you to references or expert opinion.

I'm not sure if I will ever play with an orchestra, but I think it would be so fun!
What is your favourite harpsichord piece?
@@broquemusicianthats’s great news! Will definetly listen to that when it comes out. My favourite harpsichord piece is probrably the prelude and fugue in f minor from the well tempered clavier book 2. Their is a recording of glenn gould playing it on the harpsichord that i love and is a real feat of playing due to his fast and unweavering tempo. I also am a big fan of the toccata in E minor by Bach especially the fugue. What pieces do you enjoy the most?
Just realised i meant F-sharp minor not f-minor.
As an older adult learning the piano, I am in awe of your playing. All your fingers seem to be moving at once, amazing. Thank you.
Thank you for watching! What piece or technique are you learning right now? Do you have an instructor or self learning? What is your favorite composition?
@@broquemusician Thank you for asking. The piece I am learning to play is Menuett from Notenbuch for Maria Anna Mozart K5. I intented to listen couple of seconds then skip to something else, but I listenetd till the end. This is really great performance and unique arrangement which catches bachs idea of the concert and does not try to simulate all voices which is great.

Bellissima esecuzione che è molto difficoltoso eseguire. Si avverte un fraseggio distribuito sapientemente ed una stratificazione sonora e ritmica anche in strumento dove è risaputo essere difficile farlo emergere ed esprimerlo. Davvero bravo e ancora congratulazioni

The harpsichord does have dynamic, just no piano-like key sensitivity. The two manuals can be coupled, many harpsichords have the lute and/or 4-foot register, and you can play with legato, staccato, and, yes, overlegato. The latter can sound very powerful on a harpsichord.
Thank you for your support. I had a few questions. Regarding the dynamic of harpsichord, would legato/staccato, count as timing or dynamic? Also, I tried searching what overlegato is and count find anything, can you please describe some more about this?
I am not a professional harpsichordist. I would love to learn as much as I can about this instrument. Thank you!
@@broquemusician It counts as articulation but plays a role in dynamic as well. If you press more keys at approximately the same time (when playing a chord or arpeggio) and you , your overall performance will be louder. Overlegato (or legatissimo) means that you hold the keys of the previous note(s) for a while before releasing them while already playing the next note. In contrast, when playing legato, you stop playing the previous note exactly when you begin playing the next.
@@broquemusicianhe guy means , that sometimes you could play it less legato, or simply lighter. I hear many times, how you hit the bottom of the keyboard. And of course it's normal , cz you only start to learn. Just saying that
harpsichord likes more non-legato, light articulation. You can play non-legato, staccato, portato , articulation diversity is very important here, since harpsichord doesn't know what dynamics is.
In some places, I would play some more freely. In Bach's time the text was like written improvisation , and sometimes you can breathe more widely to make phrasing more clear ( another aspect extremely important when u play harpsichord)
All very interesting! Thank you all! We can all appreciate the pianist desire to learn how to play the harpsichord well. Thanks for playing this wonderful and amazing composition. Well done!

Have you heard Jean Rondeau's interpretation of this piece? If so what did you think? Sounds incredible, thank you!
@@scottashe984 Yes I have! Jean Rondeau is an incredible professional harpsichordist. I love his ornamentation. My video is definitely lacking some embellishments and I will remake this video in the future. His sound is bold, projecting, and accurate. I am not a professional harpsichordist, but regarding my opinion, I think a slower tempo, like Glenn Gould's interpretation, displays the full expressive potential and counterpoint of the piece. I prefer a slower tempo with agile ornamentation. Additionally, at 3:23 and overall, I prefer more contrast in the timing (i.e. staccato/tenuto/legato) when playing the repeated melodies. But I assume when playing with an orchestra, Jean projecting the sound is more important than expressing extreme variances in the timbre.
