Thanks for watching, Reena! As you know from our collaborations, I enjoy the balance of knowing about the challenges but then embracing that any of them are worth navigating if the music communicates something meaningful. The first time I ever collaborated with a composer was with my high school choral teacher, Rich Brunner. He asked me for a list of oboe quirks and I gave him such a long list that he may have had some second thoughts about writing for oboe, but three pieces later, I'm glad he didn't let my quirks list discourage him.
The high D on my Loree is sharp as well and I accidentally found out the C key, which is what you’re doing here, helps bring it down. I thought something was wrong with my oboe. Thank you for posting this video.
Glad it helped! Another thing to check: When you put down the low C key, does it lower the key under RH2 all the way down, or if you press RH2 on it, does it click a bit? That's an adjustment issue of its own that can result in more sharpness, and it's easy to fix, but often a sign that some other adjustments might also be due for a look.
Take your loree to a professional! Not a school band teachers helper! Most band instrument repair persons still don't know Jack shite about the true intricacies of adjustment setups. I play on a Lorte AK got from John Ellis, and Mark Chudnow is one of the finest oboe/EH technician, designer manufacturing gurus. Remember that the oboe is an expensive instrument to maintain.
As a (self taught) intermediate oboist, this made no sense. And it's a me problem: I'm not familiar with a lot of the terminology. I really want to learn but where do I start? Any suggestions?
The 1/2 hole b key is adjusted WAY TOO HIGH ON Most OBOES! THAT'S why the intonation issue! "Most" fingering charts? Beginning oboe method fingering charts? Students need to know that not all oboes are made the same, and that there are many fingering charts over the last 100 years
I love these! It so helps as a composer to know how performers are thinking about and navigating the challenges of their instrument!
