I played Oboe 4 years. I was bullied badly by all students yet the teachers told me they never had an oboist with such good control and tone. The bullying got to me and I lost all passion and confidence. I’ve picked up the courage to pick up my instrument and continue my passion. I’m not Afraid anymore. Thank you for this, I thought I was alone, but I got bullied so bad for playing oboe in 5th grade and I couldn’t ever afford one so I quit playing and moved to the clarinet, now I have a beautiful oboe I bought and I play with a community band with and I always get compliments on my tone and playing

I've just started oboe this year in 7th grade. I can't tell u how many times I wanted to give up in the beginning lol😂

I played the oboe for 7 years from 94-00, but didn't keep up with it as I went to college. I've pulled my oboe out from time to time over the years, but just recently had the time to dive fully back in. Your videos are great for me. Thanks for sharing.

I played trumpet for about 8 years when I was younger. Now that I'm out of the military, I want to do something I've always wanted to do and learn to play the Oboe. I think I'll follow this channel to learn how to do it.

Wonderful tips - just what I needed. My instructor has been working with me on tone but I felt like I sort of hit a wall. Some of your tips are different . . . I'm excited to give them a try!
OMG< THANK YOU!!!!!! because of the necessity to get dentures (implants too expensive) I am re learning to play after a lifetime of playing the oboe with a normal mouth. I cannot wait to try these steps. And yes you can play with denturers (use adhesive but not too much. thank you again. What you are saying really makes sense to me.

DUDE. My band teacher hired me a private instructor for a day. I didnt learn how to play the instrument at all. This helped me so much.
Needed this because my band director needed an oboist but I don't want to sound like the oboist from last year
Awesome! Great pointers. My oboe professor also introduced the whistle embouchure when playing in most of the range of the oboe up till high C, where he then taught me to pull my corners back like a wide grin for high notes above C#. What are your thoughts and procedures when playing in that range?
Everyone has their own way of playing. I myself do not "smile" for the high register as I feel it spreads the tone. I double down on tight corners and support as well as taking in a bit more reed.

I have been balling my eyes for the past 10 minutes while watching this video, because this is my second year playing oboe and I know how to play. But when school started I didn’t remember any of my notes and now I feel like when I first started, we have a playing test tomorrow and I still don’t know how to play my instrument..

I have been playing Alto Saxaphone for about two years now, and just recently switched to Oboe because my band directors needed an Oboist. I was struggling getting a good tone and this helped a lot. Do you have any tips for squeaking when changing notes? I'm struggling with not squeaking the most when playing Oboe.

Hi there, I'm a new kid on the block as in the fact that at the ripe old age of 58 I took up the oboe just over five months ago!! This was a birthday present from my husband, and we are renting one from a music store which is about half an hour drive away from us. The rental expires in two weeks time, so we will need to think about what to do next, whether it would be possible to extend the rental for another six months or whether we should buy one. I'm having problems with breathing and the oboe keeps going flat which is very frustrating. I have been working hard on posture, which is difficult for me as I have scoliosis, but I love the oboe so much I'm determined to keep persevering! I will download your PDF sheet, I really need help though, as I haven't got a teacher yet. The oboe reed crows a C quite happily, so everything seems fine to start with and then the tone goes flat. It could be an embouchure thing, so I will try to work on that. Anyway thank you very much for your excellent advice. I've just got to keep persevering. I don't have a teacher yet, so need to get some proper lessons. Very hard to teach yourself oboe!!

Just got my oboe, I can get honks. That's it. Notes? Nope. Honks. They do not sound like correct sounds.
Hello Ron! This is I think my 8th ish month playing the oboe and I have an honor band audition in 2 days. One of the etudesI have to audition with has one particular part where I switch between middle octave f and low octave Ab. Whenever I do it my oboe has a lot of trouble going down to the lower octave but when I start with the lower octave the Ab comes out fine! I really don’t know what do do and I’m kinda worried. If you could reply to this and maybe help me out that would be great! Anyways thanks for the awesome video!!

I just started learning oboe(I’m a flute player) and this is so different from flute blowing and I keep squeaking
idk if im the only one but this is my 2nd year on oboe and sometimes when i play too much my lips get tired and i start like spitting kind of and i cant play do you have any tips to stop that
Your sound is so beautiful, the tutorial and tips were very clear. I just have a problem, whenever I’m practicing on just the reed, I sound great but when I start to do it with the instrument attached, it all goes wonky and sounds like an angry duck. Could you please help me? Thank you!!
Thank you so much for watching and for your comment! This sounds like a complex issue that could be caused by a number of things. Firstly, I wouldn't judge my sound by playing on the reed alone - that gives you a very limited scope of what you will sound like on the oboe. Hey thank you so much for this video! This is my 3rd year of playing oboe, and I am having trouble hitting any note after C above the staff. When I play those notes, I either crow or the note drops down an octave. Any ideas on what I’m doing wrong?
Thanks for watching! I suspect this is a reed or oboe issue, but if you get a multiphonic on those notes it could be because you're taking in too much reed. Are you sure the fingerings that you're using are correct?

Hello! I’ve been playing oboe for about a year. I still sound like a dying duck but I’m not too bothered, although i have a reoccurring issue. After about five or six measures of playing, I feel like I can’t push anymore air through my reed and it makes my throat go “grrhrrhrhehhehe”. Almost like a scratchy, gargley version of saying “mhmmm”. It really hurts my throat. It has happened on two different reeds. Previously, they were tough to play but I had a professional adjust them for me so they weren’t as thick. Is it still a reed problem, an oboe, problem, or a me problem? 😂
I know that feeling the "grrgrgrgehehe" sound it happens to me so randomly not even playing an instrument, literally got my oboe today and i sound awful, just wanted to share that i can relate lol good luck though!!
@@kierstyn140 i think it was bc my reeds were old and it took wayyyyyyy too much air pressure to get a sound out, so carbon dioxide was building in my lungs and my throat would get scratchy and I would almost faint 😭 Now i have softer reeds and I learned how to have better air support. AND IF YOU DONT KNOW, sometimes you have to BREATHE OUT when playing, since you say you got it today, it’s ok! I’ve been playing for almost two years, but I’ve been playing flute for 5 (im a sophmore) When you start playing mark areas to breathe out so carbon dioxide doesn’t build in your lungs and you don’t faint. Then you can find breath marks to breath back in. If you don’t already have a teacher, find a professional to teach you. Most of the time normal band directors won’t know how to teach oboe properly (unless it was their original instrument) and can’t give out all the little tricks n stuff if you know what I mean. I definitely know more now than I used too, although I’m still not a pro heh.

@@kierstyn140 Np bestie, also don’t buy reeds off amazon. Stellar oboe products has good reeds. Also, don’t try flavored ones bc apparently those things exist 😭🤚🏻and I’ve wanted to play clarinet too, and I almost did sax but we couldn’t get an extra. I think if i switch instruments again my band director is gonna kill me though so maybe next year

Everytime I play I get lightheaded, do you have any tips on how to avoid that?
If you're standing when you play, make sure you're not locking your knees. Otherwise, I think your reeds might be too resistant.
@@oboeari I used to get lightheaded when I played my piccolo trumpet at first. I was taking in more air than I needed for a phrase and it was going stale because I wasn't using it all up, and then I would inhale on top of it. My lungs were full, but they were holding partly stale air even though I'd just taken a breath. Maybe you have stale air left in your lungs that needs to be exhaled first so the fresh, oxygenated air can get in there.
is there a reason european oboists hold their oboes almost straight out in front of them? what i started taking lessons in denmark, my teacher said "oh you play like an american, like you're playing a clarinet"
Interesting. I think that it's just tradition! But it does help keep the higher octave in tune!
