Another great round up and detailed explanation asto why certain areas will achieve low temps. in coming overnight periods. This particular cold spell has not been so gutsy as the November 2024 spell, here in Outer Hebrides and both were less boisterous than the March 2024,at least for snowfall and colder day temperatures, bearing in mind that a couple of days ago, temps reached +5c.It’s also bitterly disappointing that this cold spell is passing away painfully slowly…years long past would have seen active lows pushing fronts quickly northeast into the cold air giving blizzards and monster drifts before milder air took over.Maybe next time….😢
- 11°C now in Reykjavík where I'm at. The national park Þingvellir: -22,6 °C today (40 km drive from Reykjavík). It's a well known "frost pool" as we say in icelandic ("frostpollur")
1ft on snow in some places on Dartmoor area..if it gets mild next week it will be followed by another extreme cold spell..dont forget 1947 started 3rd week of january and lasted about 8 weeks
We had falling snow today over hingston down in the southwest but non settled despite me being 260 meters above sea level inland, the dreaded Tamar heat island effect from the south hams ruined my chances for snow becuese the marginally warmer air blew in & up from the south from over Plymouth city below, where as just a few miles up the road at princetown it was a whiteout situation. I sort of new this was going to happen, there simply was not enough thermal inertia here, we need a good continental freeze to get a hefty covering here so we get the sea effect snow on a subzero southeasterly, that set up is perfect for here. No matter which direction it comes from here if its not an easterly freeze up ime pretty much out of luck for snow despite my altitude. Its still snowing now but not enough to stick.
I live in Mid Wales at 900ft and this cold air -4 -5 has been present for a few days! If you go lower down there's no snow.. All about altitude when temperature is being talked about!
I give up mark, Eastbourne (east sussex) on the south coast gets nothing while Brighton to our west and rye in kent to our east gets loads. I'm not going to be interested now unless snow comes from the east. Always a let down from the west.
lets see first how long it takes for the mild to shift the cold,it could be a long process down south..i'm not convinced the models are correct and the high pressure may move further north allowing a more easterly or south easterly flow
Good evening Mark Do you believe that after the current cold snap & warming now coming in we could see any further cold spells & what’s the likely hood of any of the bad weather affecting the USA affecting Scotland thanks
I believe in weather patterns a lot and that once you get a cold spell it will be repeated later down yhe line so I would nt right off winter just yet 1947 did nt get going till 20th Jan in that year and look what happened then snow blitz of biblical proportions so ok it might warm up then again it might just flip again but whatever happens in two weeks it could all change again and become stuck so never say never untill it happens or the fat lady sings

It's been frosty all day today in Barrow-in-Furness Cumbria the temps dropping again now. & we are on the coast. 🥶 thanks Mark

Perhaps there will be a temperature inversion over the far south of the England and more so into France, close to the centre of the high.
we always get winter part two in spring in Scotland

We had a dusting of snow on the south coast of england.
Take care on the roads Mark 🥶
And then its back to a normal boring mild winter..Didn't get hardly any snow here today in Winchester Hampshire..
Plenty where i am..20miles from Winchester
I think next if we get a lot of cloud in England temperatures will be close to average

My bet is personally more serious cold early Feb, but that's just a guess

😅
If the cold sustained itself until about the 15th, I would say it would’ve been a severe cold spell, but more like a moderate cold spell
