My 28 Gauge Love Affair

- After shooting this gun at Phoines, i convinced tom to let me borrow it for a few months to see if 28 gauge and I really fit together.
I have made some epic memories with this gun and i loathingly sent it back, but not without giving it a review so i can look back at it for years to come!

That is a gorgeous bit of kit. Instead of giving it back, give him a wad of cash and keep it.
I think that is the finest 28g I have ever seen, absolutely beautiful !
I’m a huge fan of the 28 ga.. K-80 with 32 inch 28 ga barrels, 8.75 pounds, is great on clays with very little recoil, and people are surprised at the little shells. The full size gun allows a true comparison across gauges.
I reload, so ammunition is a little cheaper than 12 ga..
In the field, my Benelli semiautomatic is easy to carry, yet effective on grouse and woodcock, and with tungsten I am told can handle ducks and even geese.
All this is in America, so may not translate into English.
Great channel. Thanks
I reallyu neeed to get my hands on a K80 or Kolar with sub gauge barrel sets, or poerhaps special order a 28g set of tubes for the DT11
Really great review Jonny, great to meet you and Michael down at UK Targets.
we look forward to the next one!
I love the solid top rib too !!! Beautiful little 28.
Great review Jonny , what a beautiful gun that is 👍
Love the deep red of the stock
Stunning piece of wood, wish i had had the funds to keep it!
Great looking gun !! Love any small bore reviews.
Now you’re talking about one of my favorite gauge!!! Have several. Now get you a sxs !!! Great video!!!
Great video. I have the 28 ga. affliction as well, but down to 2 now: Silver Pigeon with straight grip and vintage Remington 11-48 Skeet gun. Looking forward to your deep dive into the 28 bore.
I have a 28 gauge Bennelli with a short LOP - fits me to a tee - this great grandma loves it
Great looking gun looking forward to ordering a William Powell in the fall!
I purchased a side by side 28 gauge and had it for a few years almost sold it, but then I took it out hunting and I fell in love.
Hi great review. Once you start shooting one its the only gun you want to use. I started shooting a 28 bore some 15 years ago. Im that hooked I got Longhorn to make me one Number D003 first one off the production line. I love it. I load my own shell and this season shot TSS and for me I had some great days. The Shell is a 20 gram loaded with 6grams of 10s first with 14 grams on top. The gun is choked
3/4 3/4. TSS is not cheap but home loading them i can make them for £1.50 each.
Regards Alan Robinson
What a beautiful looking gun , that stock and engraving are great and can see were the money is.
Be careful! 28 ga addiction is no joke!!! I succumbed years ago I am afraid I only mention it in order to save the unwary! Once you discover 28 ga, you will find yourself slipping towards oblivion because good 28 ga guns are pricey! I have a Caesar Ellipse, a Browning Citori, a Fausti Dea Duetto 28/410, a Connecticut RBL, a Ruger Red Label, Remington 1100-28 and a Parker from 1899! ALL in 28 ga. Someone save me!
😂😂😂 your beyond saving sir.
An enviable collection there. ❤
FYI, Missing custom LUT at 1:25
And I am outraged. I only came here for the Custom LUT, preferably before 1:30. I should like to speak to the manager.
Just left it there to keep you sharp...
@@kristiangustafson4130 Hi Karen, woke, woke.
LUT ??
I shot a 28 bore for years and it was definitely my gun of choice. The joy of handling a SxS 29” barrelled straight hand box lock ejector built in 1909 by Stephen Grant is something to behold. A rare piece and deadly.
Just visited Barbury for the first time for a lesson with Josh on the back of your videos there!
Looks a superband very pretty gun with limitations for the right application. On the question of choke I always wondered why some were so far removed as in 1/4 and Full.Personally prefer same chokes in both tubes.Guessing this gun fires bottom barrel first ? as non selective.Like to use top barrel first in an O/U as easier to reload in a hurry.
Great collaboration between Rizzini and William Powell. I like the solid ribs and non-selective safety. Reasonable price for the quality. If I didn’t have a BR550 Round Body 28ga then this. Now that I shoot only ruffed grouse and woodcock in eastern Canada 28ga is all I need. Average 20 yards max 30 yards. Loads from 17g to 28g with cylinder and 1/4 choke does it all. I believe the original 2½@ 28ga load was ⅝ ounce or about 18g.
I have purchased outdoor clothes and kit from William Powell; great service and fast shipping.
I don't remember seeing 28ga in (Western) Canada when I was a kid. Are they newish in Canada? Or were they always a thing east of the Great Lakes? (I live in the UK now)
@@kristiangustafson4130 Not newish in Canada. I also had never heard of the 28ga as a kid and for many years after. My first 28ga was a Bernardelli Roma 6 28ga from Giovanni Gun Store in Toronto about 25 years ago Not common now, but maybe as or more common than 10ga and 16ga. Ammo was available way back; I have some old Imperial paper loaded in the 70's and some CIL Canuck paper loaded I guess around the 50's.
@@Beccaccia28yeah I bet if I ask my old man he'll tell me he owned one/several over the years.
That is such a beautiful gun!
Brilliant review as always.
Glad you enjoyed it
I love your videos! Please keep doing them, someday I would very much like to meet you. I am overdue to go to England we have friends that have asked us to come. They are from Portsmouth. Anyway cheers from America and well done as always!
My dad loved 28 for uplands!
I had one when I was 11 for my first gun great little round. I don’t use it anymore because it was a cheap auto loader that didn’t want to feed but the round itself is good
Came for the 28 ga, stayed for the tweed! Was almost disappointed! And why were you out in the cold with a mesh waistcoat anyway? 😁😉👍🏼👍🏼
Could you do a similar video on a 20 bore especially commenting on the shot load and choking for Game?
It would be great if we could all get what we liked, unfortunately most of us have to do with what we can afford . Another great video Jon you couldn`t have picked better for an affair
Lovely gun by the way👍😊
Been a long time since I commented, but boy that is a beautiful gun, love a 28
Thanks guys!!
Certainly a bit of you!
@@tgsoutdoors see you guys in a few months🥳
Hi Johnny, that's a lovely little gun, is there any reason for so many different gauges in shotguns.
My dream is to be able to buy either an OU or SBS shotgun in 28ga with the capability to change the barrel and caliber to either .410 or 20ga (I believe some of the Rizzini shotguns are able to do this). My greatest problem however is that it is pretty much impossible to obtain any sort of lead free ammunition and/or loading components for the 28ga and .410 (i live in Norway).
Lovely little gun. I’m thinking I really should get a shotgun that’s steel proofed and seriously considering a Rizzini.
Have a look at the BR110 and the newly released BR220. I have a BR550 28ga and a BR110 Beccaccia Light. Great guns.
wont go far wrong with one
Nice video! Does anyone know what kind of ear protection this is?
When you shoot your O/U which barrel do you use first? It looks like you use the top barrel? We have been told the bottom barrel is first. What are your thoughts?
I have a beeetta 686 Field S in 28g, it’s been a spectacular companion in the woods. Phenomenal video brother 🍻
Very likely that's the sort of thing i'll end up with, good and rreliable and a good test bed to see how much i actually use the 28
That’s a pretty gun. Not shot a 28G before, worth having one in the cabinet?
From my experience, 1/2oz or 3/4oz loads are perfect for a 28 gauge, depending on firearm and the shooter. I agree, 1oz is over stuffing, and guarantee that the 3" shells are pretty much a waste in my opinion. They offer nothing, but higher cost and more recoil, for a worse pattern. Now you have the 20 gauge syndrome, of flattening shot and getting flyer pellets at a constant.
In my experience hunting, 28 gauge and 16 gauge are the best shotguns out there. I honestly think you need to play with a few true 16 gauge guns with 1oz loads and 1 1/8oz loads. Do a pattern test even, you will be amazed that 16 is indeed the king. But 28 gauge is pretty damn good for a small bore. Just wish more versatility in ammunition was available. It doesn't sell in Canada because of it.
With a scattered right shoulder, that never came right, my options are quite limited. So, a 28 would perfectly suit me.
Nice stock
Try TSS in one!
The shot column should be no more than 10% longed than the bore diameter if good patterns are to be achieved. The 28 gauge at that load would be only a bout 5/8 ounces. That would restrict range to 25 yards.
A study years ago by Winchester deduced the 28 and 10 bore are the most optimum bores...When I was competing seriously in American skeet I only shot the 28 bore for doubles, 12 bore, 20 bore and 28 bore events due to the fact my 28 bore average waa very close to 100% and my 12, and 20 averages were less...I keep telling you Johnny if you want to shoot comparable scores in the sub bores have barrels made to fit your Longthorne that weigh and balance the same as your 12 bore barrels
I'm currently reading Bob Bristers book, Shotgunning the Art & Science, & yes Bob mentions Winchesters findings regarding the 10 & 28 bores. I believe Bob was heavily involved in the testing himself.
Rizzini makes nice guns.
Finally got to watch this!
1:26 what is a LUT???
How would it be to shot compared to that titanium LongThorn you shot? That was a 28 guage right?
I really like this.
I understand 8:25 about the thinking through... I'm going through that with a scout style rifle right now... It's a headache but a lovely one.
A lut is a basic colour loader to alog image. Its a mistake from our editing side, but somehow was missed when this was proofed by 12 people!
Great Vid has all ways , Question , what has 28Gauge have over a 20bore , i shoot 12 and 20 . but never fired a 28 .
Roy, nothing at all over any of them. Just different. Try one. You'll love it.
Always been enamored with 28ga
I myself have been considering getting the cz bobwhite g2 28ga but not sure about it yet
Had a Ringneck in 12 move it on asap.
If you really like that 28 Ga. The manufacturer might give you a good deal on it if you wanted to buy it. First time watching you and subscribed and liked. The Norma factory video was great and I learned a lot. You don't know what you don't know. Enjoyed it all except that you talk a little fast.
I've shot 75000 wood pigeons with my Miroku 28 bores (weighing 6 3/4 lbs), so can write from experience. I always use 28g loads, with Gamebore Regal being favourite (sadly, the fibre wad shells just aren't as effective). With Modified choke, the pattern is superb out to 55 yards, but if the woodies are decoying (ie often within 25 yards), this pattern can damage the birds badly, as it's pretty tight close in; with improved cylinder, to 40 yards.
How do you shoot what we Americans call skeet with a single shot. Our best ranges have at least 5 clays
Sporting that is. Competition is double barreled mostly over and under. Amazing
Where do we get a tgs hat
What happened to your Longthorne?
Can i ask what brand your safety glasses are I really like them 👍
Edwards eyewear Hiroki 2’s
I've bought 3 William Powells from Tom Peachy, he's a good egg. Good to catch up with you last Friday BTW. Regards.
he is isn't he! Look forward to next time we see each other mate
@@tgsoutdoors Absolutely fella,see you soon.
Been waiting for this dive into your small bore obsession.
Why not 20? Split the difference?
Porque o mercado não investe no cal. 16?
Might want to cut out the Missing LUT glitch that slipped through in the edit 👍
Johnny carreses shotgun. 😂
What make is the green jacket your wearing?
Merkel Palearctic 365
Muy linda arma 🇪🇨🇪🇨👍
I. LOVE. 28. GAUGE.
Would you do a video on all around shotguns?
Like General purpose shotguns?
My 28 gauge is 5 1/2 pounds and is a true dear.
I do get some ribbing from friends about firing a kids weapon.
They laugh until mid-day and we've covered 5 or more miles and I'm still walking looking for birds.
The 28 kills way better than the gauge would lead you to think.
Same here. Lots of walking in eastern Canada for grouse and woodcock.
Kids gun 😂😂 that's the kind of ribbing I get, that is until they see it hit something. Odd thing is, the jokers then turn up with a 28. That bore has a mystery about it.
👍 👍
Considering your tastes in firearms, I'm surprised by the timepiece that adorns your wrist. Shocking really.
First attempt at jumping the shark, if I'm reading the title correctly.
Can I ask one silly question?
Why use any other gauge? The 28 in my opinion, will do just about everything, except perhaps, the really stupid stuff promoted by certain egoists on TH-cam.
Opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one.
Why in the world would anyone want a 3 inch 28?
Steel shot
👍👍👍🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌👍👍👍
Dude you are cheating on your .410 shame shame
Nice Wood 👌👌
