For most people, myself included, you go to a shop, handle a few guns and guess at what feels comfortable and useful. We don't take into consideration the thought, time and materials that has gone into a stock shape that works well for most people. But the process is extremely important and a beautiful thing to see.
This guy comes across so well in all of your videos, seems a lovely bloke. And his guns are amazing!! If I had money to spare I know exactly where ide spend it! Would love one of their side by sides 🤤
I met Jim at the 2021 Game Fair when my mate dropped his own Longthorne into Jim to open the bores out a couple of thou to better suit clay loads, he really is a great bloke and a true gentleman with no airs and graces but just loves to talk guns, I could never afford one but if I could there would not be the slightest hesitation. Great guns made by a truly passionate gunmaker who has put modern method into a classic art form.
Bravo Gentlemen! It took some compromises on both of your parts. But this came together as a true work of art. This gun and hopefully future guns made like would be something anyone would be proud to unsheathe at a game shoot. Great video as always.
Must of watched this 20 time or more, Along with the other #Longthorne videos. Love the process, love to outcome. I'd probably purchase a spoting stock to go with it. I Only wish I could afford one.. 😢 #tweedl 😉 #tgsproofhouse #tgsoutdoors . much love
The man who made my stock in the US was amazing. He would make adjustments on the belt sander with no measurements. All done by eye. The end product was perfect. It was amazing to watch him work. A true artisan.
i really really enjoyed this, watching you two bickering in a well behaved manner and created a beautiful game gun. I truly love the design of this gun.
Absolutely beautiful game gun- love the stock design too !!!! I am surprised you chose 29" barrels, instead of at least 30". I was hoping you would say what this gun weighted in at when all was completed. Super job- both of you chaps did incredible work !!!!
I have been up tight and at ease watching this video & the gun designing. All in all it was a great process. I hope to own a Longthorne shotgun in the future but I want the big, fill your hand designed stock. Thank You for giving this process thru a great video! JE
Longthorne riibless and move weight on barrel thickness. 30 inch barrels are perfect for an allround game gun. Open grip "Boss style" stock with tear drops and slim forend. Stock shall have the old slim woodwork. Rolled side on trigger guard. How about double triggers :-) A A Brown makes lovely wood for shotguns.
Great viedo on the intracatacies of stock design. At 29:55 it is mentioned that even less pistol grip woudl be ideal to have the arm resting in the right ready position. This ends up with almost a straight grip which they have used for 180 years. I have 25-30 Side bys and OUs and initially did not like the straight grips. After time I realized the ease of shooting one. I also have large hands and grabbing one is like shaking hands. I can shoot for hours with little fatigue. I also wanted to chime in that the shop designed gun was very elegant. Not sure about how rugged that very thin grip would be however. Grain selection for this stock would be hugley important. Thanks for this video and would appreciate your thoughts.
That is one stunning piece of kit. I just love the look of the thing, everything is in balance with everything else, the wood, the action are so well suited to make a stunning piece of art. Well done the guys at Longthorne. If I had the cash I'd be on the phone in the morning!!!
A lot of classic field books talk about shooting elbow out, that was the style. There’s on on woodcock that Project Upland re-released I was just listening to on audible
Yeah, I think I'd put away the rasp (and the power tools) before I add wine to the mix. ;-) Funny, but if you go digging through photos of high grade Winchester & Marlin lever rifles, you're going to run into examples of grips similar to that. And with a lever, you've something which aesthetically wants to be a straight grip, but as you want to afford your gun hand a bit more control, you start heading in this direction. And it still checks the Aesthetics box. Nice job!
That first timber was amazingly gorgeous. And the production version once all the engraving and finish was done upped the ante even further. Nice work boys.
I thought you guys would whittle the stock down until there wasn't anything left! There is a certain elegance in a slim sporting gun. With that comes the liveliness, dare I say twitchiness, that such guns have. Why shooting is often best as a sport than just mechanical; proves you are alive. If it looks good then often it is. Gunmaking is a skill.
Many if not MOST "gun owners" vs somewhat serious shooters don't realize how much a long gun's comfort and FITMENT to the "individual" user (like a well tailored suit!) is paramount to how often you'll hit the target. This looks the dog's golden bollocks in that regard...👍
Old British SxS’s have the worst ergonomic stocks I’ve ever had, and more than make up for it by being pure style! That was a huge improvement. Well done! 👍🏼
WOW !!! This is the things that dreams are made of. How awesome would it be to put your opinions, preferences and likes into the making of a nearly perfect field gun. I would love to have an opportunity like that.
Loved the video great contributions from you both, but can't help thinking it was like Triggers broom.... ''Changed the handle 3 times and the head 5 times !!!''
A master of his craft in every sense.Always liked the Woodward Style Grip following handling a Purdey Woodward SXS owned by a local blue blood many years ago. Will there be a Longthorne Carter in the pipeline 😈
Blast. I was hoping you would speak for the Big Lads Union, Johnboy, and persuade the world that the perfect ‘off the shelf’ game gun should come with a 16.5” length of pull and an extra bit of comb height - and maybe with a little bit of left hand cast in it. Still, lovely piece of work, this.
Your Longthorne guns are incredibly gorgeous. With the exception of those full pistol grips. Gosh that is a monstrosity to look at. Never held one so i can't speak to how it feels. But good lord that is an eyesore.
What a fantastic video!! To me that is what an o/u should look like!! I would have thinned out the forehand I little more in its thickness… but that is just me lol! I love the open grip… I have a few rifles with these open grip and they look great and handle great!! Thanks for taking the time to make this video!! What would be the starting price on something like that?
@TGS Outdoors, Oh my god Johnny! That gun is just gorgeous. The banter was hilarious! Thank you for the teaching of grip manufacture. Wonderful. I so wish I was shooting, a licence holder and be able to afford to shoot By the way whose is the Bassett? Wonderful colours on him or her. Jonathan
Yet again another entertaining and informative video jonny. Would love to afford a Longthorne one day. Keep it up matey. Have an idea of a product and would love to discuss with you for your opinion sometime. Its still in the planning stage but i believe would be a good idea. Obviously not the best place to discuss. Cheers Glenn
That looks very similar to the stock I have on my Perazzi MX8 sporting clays gun. I’m one who doesn’t think a clays gun has to have a big buttstock with a palm swell deep pistol grip.
Great content as always. Gotta say I was disappointed in gunmakers row at the game fair 2022. There was simply no evidence of gunmaking just gun selling. Some craft content such as this would definitely elevate the fair above simply being another retail opportunity. Particularly as English gun making is clearly alive and well.
For most people, myself included, you go to a shop, handle a few guns and guess at what feels comfortable and useful. We don't take into consideration the thought, time and materials that has gone into a stock shape that works well for most people. But the process is extremely important and a beautiful thing to see.
Seriously bummed that I can only give this video a single thumbs up.
It deserves a lot more.
This guy comes across so well in all of your videos, seems a lovely bloke. And his guns are amazing!! If I had money to spare I know exactly where ide spend it! Would love one of their side by sides 🤤
Jim is just as good a bloke in real life
I met Jim at the 2021 Game Fair when my mate dropped his own Longthorne into Jim to open the bores out a couple of thou to better suit clay loads, he really is a great bloke and a true gentleman with no airs and graces but just loves to talk guns, I could never afford one but if I could there would not be the slightest hesitation. Always good to see the boss of any compamy get his hands dirty too! Seems very involved, can see he's passionate about what he's doing 👌
One of the best features to date ... proper free style brain storming, resulting in a physical finished article. Loved it.
Good direction on the stock- definitely has a vintage classic historical look to it.
It is a special moment when you cross the line from aficionado to connoisseur and you just did! Thanks for sharing the journey!
Bravo Gentlemen!

Jonny you lucky lucky man !! What an amazing experience….. and what a stunning looking game gun.
The man who made my stock in the US was amazing. He would make adjustments on the belt sander with no measurements. All done by eye. The end product was perfect. It was amazing to watch him work. A true artisan.
Love the basset hound in the back !! He needs to make more appearances !
Agreed, he is the best!1
He should present the next Clay tour
@@tgsoutdoors I raised Basset Hounds & had 4 of my own at one time. The worst part is keeping their ears clean, LOL.
Looking forward to seeing it in the field
Thanks
Like father and son 🤣🤣 what a bloody great watch 👌👊
Assume gun Assume guy . What a privilege to be Involved in the design of a Longthorn game gun . This will be the gun on every game shooters wish list
i really really enjoyed this, watching you two bickering in a well behaved manner and created a beautiful game gun. I truly love the design of this gun.
Thankyou 🙏
Very enjoyable watch 🤝☺️
This your best ever!!! That guy has wit beyond most most human comprehension!!!
Beautiful work guys!
How freaking cool is Jim with the angle grinder?!
An artist for sure
I can see a limited line of ‘grind like Jim’ merch coming together 😂
@@tgsoutdoors his wife might have something to say about that 🤣🤣🤣

Classic in the making, great film thank you for sharing
I would love one of those in 20 bore with 32 inch barrels it would make the perfect game gun and sim day gun !
The best video yet johnny 👍 please more like this mate ,well done #carterlongthorne
Beautiful . . . and function too.
Excellent rapport, process and result. P. Pappous, USA
A great creative prozess
How cool you were able to provide input and feedback for this gun! Congrats 😀
That finished stock looks lovely.
Everyday is a school day, best day at school ever.

I absolutely love watching these type of videos very entertaining 👍🏻

Another beautiful Longthorne - great gun - great video - well done to all.
These are my favourite videos, keep up the good work guys.
Excellent Video❤ Good Job i like it.
Well done , stock looks great ,.
Thankyou Carl 😊
Great show I'd say. Alot of heart and passion went into this one.
One gem of a bird gun.
Yeah, I think I'd put away the rasp (and the power tools) before I add wine to the mix. ;-)

Absolutely brilliant video to watch of a gun being made.
That first timber was amazingly gorgeous. And the production version once all the engraving and finish was done upped the ante even further. Nice work boys.

Brilliant video found it very interesting on the entire process of this and how it all comes together
Crackling vid. Thank you, and congratulations on a awesome gun.
Love the interaction but the gunmaker knows best, nice final stock
Old British SxS’s have the worst ergonomic stocks I’ve ever had, and more than make up for it by being pure style! That was a huge improvement. Well done! 👍🏼
What a couple of nice blokes.Takes a London gunmaker(stocker) a seven year apprenticeship to get to this level🙃
WOW !!! This is the things that dreams are made of. How awesome would it be to put your opinions, preferences and likes into the making of a nearly perfect field gun. I would love to have an opportunity like that.
If it was case colour hardened it would look even more the part… beautiful 😍
A case hardened action with appropriately elegant engraving is in the works
Best get saving then!
Now that's a gun I could get excited about
Loved the video great contributions from you both, but can't help thinking it was like Triggers broom.... ''Changed the handle 3 times and the head 5 times !!!''
That was rad!
Thankyou!
I wish we have Guns like That in belgium.
A master of his craft in every sense.Always liked the Woodward Style Grip following handling a Purdey Woodward SXS owned by a local blue blood many years ago. Will there be a Longthorne Carter in the pipeline 😈
Love it. Although my bucket list is getting longer now 😍
This is the 1st o/u I actually like the look of

Great video, we need a full series with you two. Also, any update on the Longthorne Hi-Power?
There is a sweet film coming on that also
Seeing you cut with a saw into this beautiful stock wood looks like sculpting a face with a cleaver... But, how terribly fun to watch. Thank you!
What a nice gun by longthorne, but does anyone know what make and model that roundbody side by side shown at 2:08 is?
An Upland Gun Company
Look at the Uberti Courtney stalking rifle; it's the grip you want. It's what I want, look at the swoop.
Oh BTW, I enjoyed this
Your Longthorne guns are incredibly gorgeous. With the exception of those full pistol grips. Gosh that is a monstrosity to look at. Never held one so i can't speak to how it feels. But good lord that is an eyesore.
Additionally having your gun made in front of you must be a bucket list moment. Cheers Jonny. love your stuff.

Wonderful! What choke size are the fixed barrels?
Total beauty 👏👏👏

Glenn drop me an email to production@tgsoutdoors.co.Uk 😊
Longthorne are doing the business.
I’d actually love one of these in 20ga for the US
Very enjoyable video ! 👍🏻
Great job however I feel you overlooked the option of a Beavertail forend, slightly controversial but I believe more aesthetically pleasing?
Nice looking gun.
If you want a light gun, how about an experiment with Ti barrels and a carbon skeleton stock and fore end?
With experimental 1/2oz loads
That looks very similar to the stock I have on my Perazzi MX8 sporting clays gun. I’m one who doesn’t think a clays gun has to have a big buttstock with a palm swell deep pistol grip.
Though this style of stock is not my cup of tea…i prefer a real tight pistol grip….I really enjoyed watching this process ….good job guys
A tremendously interesting watch. Very nice indeed. FFF
Sometimes I forget just how different British and American culture can be. This was so British
I need one!
13:55 you say that like youre surprised lol
That’s a beauty. Will they make it in 16ga? (Or ship it to the states?)
Yes and yes
After all the mentions in holts and other reviews, how come you didn’t get a long trigger guard?
Great content as always. Gotta say I was disappointed in gunmakers row at the game fair 2022. There was simply no evidence of gunmaking just gun selling. A great gun
pardon my ignorance but is there a reason the forearm is not as well fitted wood/to metal as the stock?
The perfect gun for Ant.
"All guns should have a full pistol grip." Me looking lovingly at a wall full of ARs, AKs and SLR/FALs in the states.
I think I missed my calling: angle grinders being used in the making of fine guns!
