      Linux has always adapted to the hurdles of modern day gaming. Anticheat is just another bump in the road that some nerd, not myself, and I say that with the utmost respect, will figure out a way to unify Fairplay across operating ecosystems. As it sits right now I cannot condone kernel-level Anticheat because if you really take a second to think about it... DMA cheats do what exactly? Direct Memory Access - cheats. Pretty self-explanatory. Kernel-level Anticheat does the same with having Direct Memory Access to fight said cheats. Neither of which should be allowed as it is a violation of our privacy and rights. Having said that there are some who will point the finger and say "you're just saying that because you want to be allowed to cheat on linux". Let me just say cheats are still raging on windows without us linux "hackers". I wanna see a video of someone rage hacking in apex legends on a steam deck.

    That would give devs an extra monetary incentive, on top of having their games featured on SteamOS.
    For anti-cheat, maybe let devs use the new VAC system, if it's really as good as they say, or maybe Valve can make a kernel module that other anti-cheat software can utilise without having direct access to the kernel?

    I've preferred the idiom, "walking on broken glass" than doomed. The doomed feeling is coming from the frustration that its no longer the games themselves that make gaming impossible but "people and politics." The whole word of mouth doesn't really work when the games you wanna play with your friends just isn't viable.
    Personally you've come across as optimistic to the point it feels dismissive to the real frustrations (not fear) regarding Linux gaming in this video. I'd say the problem with Vanguard is, so long as it is somewhat successful, it doesn't really matter how good or better the VacNet 3.0 is, there will be big projects that prefer kernel-anti-cheats.
    Perhaps it is "doomed" for people who weren't already serious about daily driving Linux. People who don't like putting thought and effort towards using their computer and "just want it to be used the way I've liked to."
    Thanks for the video, cheers!

      Iv realised that there are a lot of people on this planet and lots of those users don't play multiplayer fps shooters, especially the older group of users in gaming, Linux gaming is a great choice for single player and some multiplayer gaming like on a steamdeck or soon steam os machines again maybe, it's why I'm rather optimistic as even tho we are seeing some studios deny Linux support or take it away, at the same time we are seeing steamdeck verified and some new multiplayer games support proton like marvel rivals recently work ootb
      It's a double edge sword and highly depends on the user and their friend groups, for me my friend group we only play a select few multiplayer games, and if one isn't able to play like because it's being blocked on Linux, we just play another game until it is supported

      @n.m4497 wonder what else wine will try and add into the kernel🧐
      By the way for anyone who doesn't know NTsync is the successor to fsync in wine, this basically is like how wine synchronises with windows software, fsync has some limitations for what it can do and to improve the last pieces codeweavers decided to try a new way in the kernel which solves everything and so NTsync was born
      This will further improve how well windows software and games run under wine and proton

    Anticheat is a problem BUT literally not a problem for linux. What I mean is not having rootkits on linux is a plus, and not a real hindrance to stopping cheating itself; may even be part of the solution if it helps devs decide to do anticheat the correct way.

    Literally the only thing linux needs for feature parity compared to an ideal windows, which atm doesn't exist as windows 11 is completely borked, is HDR. The colour management protocol is about to merge in Wayland so after that, it's up to the desktop environments to complete it then I think wine or proton need to implement it without using gamescope, for videos like mpv they need to fully implement it also instead of needing to use the terminal to get it working

    As much as I hate to say it , dude , Linux is still not ready for gaming in the competitive scene at least... • @linuxnext
      @linuxnext  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@underratedphonker6395 ok I don't think I said anything in this video about competitive scene on Linux, I know this but you also need to realise that's only a fraction of the gaming space, gaming isn't only just about competitive games and most people don't even know what ESEA, FACE IT etc even is, they just want to play games and for that Linux can be great for that if you know you wont be playing competitively in fps games, even so there are still options to play games at a competitive level even if you don't have access to things like face it etc, not every person wants or feels the need to become a competitive player
      I do hope valve solves this issue but for now Linux gaming is for a particular use case for gamers

      Steam has improved a lot for Linux gaming, one important one is their runtimes which allows games to run on almost any distro without problems, it uses debian as it's base so the games remain stable, so developers now don't have an excuse for that, also the market share used to be under 1% 2 years ago, it's since grown so much so I don't think Linux is bad by any means, the major problems with Linux like depends hell with your apps breaking and games are gone, things like Flatpak solve that issue and have a nice gui store for the user, the only thing left rlly is anticheat and that's a fine excuse if you don't want your multiplayer game running under proton as it's in userspace
