- Savage 340A from 1952. Used to be a 22" barrel rifle, but now it's a carbine with 18" barrel. Rear Dockendorff sight has been customized into a "ghost ring buckhorn". Trying out Reload Swiss RS14 powder for reduced loads. This replaces discontinued Cowboy Action powders, Trail Boss and Tin Star. Factory ammo is too expensive. I plan to cast my own bullets, to save money. Don't want to bother with gas checks. Need to keep velocity down to about 1450 f/sec to avoid leading. RS14 powder is perfect for this.
Nice video bud. Thanks for sharring. Hello from melbourne australia!. I have a similar model in 22 hornet
Hello, Aussi! So nice to hear from "down under". Bet the weather is warmer than in Norway. Glad you enjoyed my video. Cheers!
Hey John, great video! These were great ole rifles. You probably know this but I'll put it here anyway. Savage also made these in 223 caliber, it'd be something to find one of those! Thanks for your video!
Hey! Thankyou. Glad you liked it. This is the only Savage 340 I have heard of, here in Norway. But I am very happy with the 30-30 cartridge. Especially now that I can download it to a level where I can cast my own bullet. Basically plinking for almost the same price as 22LR.
Nice video. Nice rifle. FYI best way to ensure you colour the safety right is the adage “red is dead”. This means that if you see red and pill the trigger on a live round, the Big Bang will smote whatever’s at the small end of the rifle. 😊
Thankyou! Sounds reasonable. Had a feeling I got this wrong. And the other dot should probably be white, instead of green. Easy fix!
Great idea love what you’ve done with the rifle!👍🏽😊❤️🇺🇸
Thankyou! Glad you like it. I'm very happy with it.
God dag herr Loken. Takk for at du viste frem karabinen din i den stadig populære patronen. Det nye pudderet høres veldig nyttig ut for redusert belastning, noe jeg liker å skyte ofte. God fotografering for det nye året! ...dok
Takk skal du ha, Doktor! Alltid hyggelig å høre fra deg. Håper du klarer å få tak i RS14 krutt.
Thats the nicest 340 I ever saw.
Thankyou! It was just like all the others, but I had a vision. Glad you liked it!
I have one of those. They are nothing special but make a good spare to loan out, etc. Definitely a capable deer gun out to 150 or so.
Yes, you're right. But they have a certain charm. They were the cheapest bolt action centrefire for years. Sold in hardware stores, department stores, and in mailorder catalogs. Not so much in actual gun stores.
@@Dimwit_the_last_mountainman Right. They were sold at Coast to Coast Hardware here in Western SD, among others. They also sold higher end stuff. I have a Model 99 Featherweight that my Grandpa bought there with period Weaver MK4. It's a fantastic deer killer in .300 Sav.
@@ranchodeluxe1 I have been to SD several times. I lived on a farm in southwestern ND from summer of 83 to summer of 85. Graduated from Bowman High School as an exchange student. Been back to visit friends and family several times. My home away from home. There was also a Coast to Coast hardware store in Bowman.
@@Dimwit_the_last_mountainman Small world. My family is from Harding County in extreme NW SD for five generations. I know that country pretty well. Yes. C to C Hdwe was everywhere. My Dad used to wholesale to them. That's how I ended up with my Rem 600 Mohawk. Everyone was saying they wouldn't sell. The Rem rep consigned a whole Buick Electra 225 trunk full to my Dad. He had no trouble selling them.
@@ranchodeluxe1 Very interesting! I kind of like guns that are a bit out of the ordinary. I would not mind having the Mohawk.
Very nice. I used to have an H & R Handi Rifle with a 30-30 and 20 guage barrels. I went the other way with reloading for 30-30. Since the rifle was a single shot I didn't use round nose bullets. I loaded spitzer boattails. I found a very accurate load with 150 grain bullets, achieving 2,600 fps . Was able to take an 8 year old bull elk and several mule deer.
Thankyou! Very interesting. Wish the magazine was longer on my Savage. So that I could run spitzer bullets. Suppuse one could have a spitzer loaded round in the chamber, and regular bullets in the magazine, on a hunt.
I noticed that. Your magazine is fairly short.@@Dimwit_the_last_mountainman
Looks like you coat your bullets John, I’m doing the same thing I’ve been using the bayou bullet coating and baking them. Very interesting little carbine Thanks for sharing.
Hello BB! I should have mentioned, these are store bought bullets. I want to wait until spring, before I cast my own. But I was eager to try that RS14 powder. Glad you enjoyed it!
I myself would like the longer barrel. Simply because a carbine length barrel seems to lose you notable FPS MV with the 30 30. You will note the loading manuals often reference a longer than carbine barrel for their tests. I would even go for a 24 inch barrel to squeeze out that extra velocity. It needs all the help it can get. And presumably you can load spitzers in a bolt rifle to get you extra yards on a shot.
True, but due to a skeleton illness I don't hunt anymore. For the same reason I like light guns. I mostly shoot steel gongs at 50 yards or less. Magazine is not long enough to take advantage of spitzer bullets. This setup works great for my purposes.
Oh, another thing... Our deere here in Norway are very small. Roedeere. No problem with an 18" barrel. Even a 16" barrel will be fine. Pretty close range hunting here in the forrest. I used to live on a farm in southwestern North Dakota. Different story. Wide open country. The 243 was king of the prarie. We had white tail deere, mule deere, and pronghorn antelope.
I have a 340 in 222 Remington.
Hello. Good to hear from you. These rifles are bit out of the ordinary. I like them!
Very neat and handy rifle
Thankyou! I'm glad you agree.
Interesting concept.
Thankyou! I am very happy with it. Glad you liked it too.
I have my grandfather's revelation that's basically the same rifle
Hi! Good to hear from you. Take good care of it. Pass it on to the next generation when the time comes.
I like it! A lot!
Thankyou! It was a fun product, and I think it turned out well. Glad you enjoyed it.
If you decide to load jacketed bullets there is data for the 110 grain 30 carbine projectile. Those bullets are really cheap. Unique is a good powder for that load
Thankyou. I live in Norway. Everything is a rip-off over here. Used to be able to buy Unique powder, but not for years now. Same thing with those bullets. Government restrictions, shipping restrictions, storage restrictions, pandemic, Ukraine war... They blame it on everything. Best days are gone. Gun owners get the shit end of the stick every time.
@ sorry to hear. Love your resourcefulness.
More like an Aperture Rear Sight than a true Ghost Ring because of the size of the aperture. A smaller opening (aperture) means greater accuracy but the trade off is they're a little harder to acquire.
Well, the "ring" does ghost out. It doesn't matter what we call it. Works well. Fast and accurate.
Where did you get the powder? Not finding it in the US
Hello Rifleman! The powder is easy to find here in Norway. Don't know about other countries. I would think the American market would be important to them. I suggest you do a google search.
nice deer killer
Yes, indeed!
If you don't want to shoot cast bullets maybe you should look into loading it with buckshot pellets
Yes, that is a possibility. I have used muzzleloader roundballs to reload various cartridges before. Works quite well, even in a 50-70. I have invested in more casting stuff, but I'll wait untill spring before casting.
I run cast bullets and plated bullets pushed at about 1400 fps with unique, reddot, and 2400 powders for linking loads.
Thanks for sharing!

@@floridagunrat1625 Thankyou! I live in Norway, and for years alot of powders have been impossible to get. We use mostly swedish Norma powder, and finnish Vihtavuori powder.
