For me, GI Joe is broken up into two categories: the figures and characters I loved as a kid (based almost entirely on the Sunbow cartoon or just actual playground time with the toys) and the characters that I like or relate to most as an adult (after having spent 10+ years in the Army, in real world hazardous duty zones, and just generally getting beaten down by life like everyone else). Rock 'N Roll falls into that second category for me and is probably one of my favorite characters from GI Joe, period. His background, his personality, his overall look all just seem much more interesting to me as an adult, even though he seemed pretty mundane to me as a kid.
It actually looks like a hybrid of the two. Like an M60 receiver, with an MG42 barrel & barrel jacket.
The ending was great with Rock'N'Roll running and breathing hard! Great stuff! Very creative!

Very informative video about one of the best Joes to come out of that original '82 3 and 3/4-inch release! I had (and still have) the ''83 swivel-arm version, which I liked better, but now I have 2 as an adult and he is that much more awesome!

Rock 'N Roll was my first G.I. Joe. I chose him because he reminded me of Oddball from the film , Kelly's Heros.
good one HCC. Rock N Roll was a favorite of mine from his comic appearances and tenacity therein. He did round out the Green 13 well and I wished I had his figure. I did get his second version pretty quickly when it came out, but wished he carried something a little more similar to his original weapon. Glad you put Rock N Roll in the spotlight.

Nice review on Rock 'N Roll! I was just recently able to attain a loose sample of the '83 swivel arm version. I went to a local toy dealer and saw him in a bin (complete but without the bipod for the gun)...and because he didn't have an O-ring, they gave him to me for only $5! All he needed was some TLC and now he's worth more than the money spent!

The length of the gun does work for the actual use of the weapon which wouldn’t be fired from the hip but from a sitting or laying position.
Fantastic review, very enjoyable to watch, these figures bring so much nostalgia, being a kid at the right time I starting collecting these at the 1982 launch of the line. I will be receiving the gentle giant jumbo version of this figure the 1982 R&R by the end of the week, I can't wait to check it out, I should have a review out on it shortly after.
The 1983 Original Joe figures were awesome, even though they did share a ton of parts and heads with each other! I think it is a creative use of molds to launch a toyline off of! plus, removing the screw on the back, you could swap out parts and make newer characters in the same style as the others! you could do that with all the other Joes, but not with the same color scheme. the only ones this doesn't apply to are Stalker, Snake Eyes and Scarlett

The name of the best 1982 Gi Joe is Rock n 'Roll. He is the one who takes the post of the 12". He is the differentiated, is the detached, is the only one, is the one you say: "This is Rock n' Roll!". Stalker is the second. Flash? Flash is good, but he does not look like a real soldier. Long live Rock n'Roll!!!!
I got the 1982 straight arm Rock N Roll for Christmas of 1983. He must have been a leftover. His thumb broke off less than a week after getting him. So, I let him drive the RAM so I could hide is broken thumb.

I believe his machine gun is actually a German MG-74 which is still used today by the German Army.
Now I could have sworn that Rock and Roll had an updated version where he had two chain guns, think predator and what Jessie Ventura used, instead of his big M60 thing. or am I thinking of someone else?

Rock n Roll is my favorite character ever! Not Snake Eyes, Not Duke...I still have my original ...broken hand and all. Mine is version 1. I still need a replacement machine gun. He's my favorite because I'm a guitarist and so was he. Rock n Roll will always have a place in my displays. He looks awesome and the MG42 is an effective weapon. I have the big pod, not the gun.
Hasbro could've scaled back on the gun, to make it a little easier for a authentic two handed grip. The Rock 'N Roll that came out in 1990? Was a little much with dule twin barreled machine guns. He was still badass.
Apparently decedents of the old Nazi gun look pretty similar and are well regarded. For a covert anti terrorist unit, using a non us high quality machine gun makes sense.

I got him through mail order with flag points. He didn't come with a file card and I don't think he came with the bipod.

(comment is in response to the uploader of this video, as well as Neal G) I like *both* versions of Rock and Roll (this one, which is a Machine Gunner, *and* the 1989 version, which is a Gatling Gunner) [both versions have the yellow full beard]. I think about pairing the 1989 version with Captain Grid-Iron (the two Joes would even go *very well* with each other, even though Captain Grid-Iron's clean shaven, but mostly because both were even available *at the same time*!) [in that, by the time Hasbro released Captain Grid-Iron's figure, it was the last year the late 80s version of Rock and Roll was still available]

+no name here Very similar. It is a derivative of the MG 42, so it has that distinctive profile.. Rock 'N Roll's weapon almost likes like they grafted part of an M60 to it.

yeah it's kinda clever when think about it the design is very cool
+no name here Apparently, the MG42, as the MG3 was sold to many, many countries (including NATO members Italy, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Spain, and West Germany), so this is a quite plausible sterile weapon--ideal for a top secret organization like the Joes. The handguard, perhaps...perhaps he wants a better grip than the barrel shroud the MG42 gives?
