    I love this figure along with the Cobra solider. So simple in design but instantly recognizable.

      +Chris Michalec The design is simple and iconic. I do like the more detailed figures that came later, but the early Cobras had an instant appeal.

    I never really understood the "army builder" part of these figures as a kid until I stumbled across the cartoon one day after school, and saw dozens of cobra trooper figure I had! I couldn't have more than one of any figure really, so they all became "specialists" so to speak! Thanks for sharing your video!

    I wish they had done a Cobra Officer in the style of the Snow Serpents or with the tactical look of the Vipers in the vintage line. Even though I like the figure it just can't see him leading Vipers who are more well equipped than the Officer is into a battle. I think this was a missed opportunity for Hasbro in the vintage line.

    I never had a Cobra Officer as a kid. I wanted one though. I remember trying to trade a classmate some Star Wars figures for an 83 Cobra Officer in early 1984. He didn't go for it.

    Great review! Hasbro show cased a concept case modern P.O.C/30th style Cobra Officer a few years ago that was never released! -Collectors including myself was highly anticipating getting this figure! The ending is great! "That is why you don't wear blue for a Jungle Op dummy!"

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +GIJOE4157 I suppose they'll never do a Scarface figure.

    Great Review. I always liked the classic blue look of the cobra soldier and officer. I only had the officer as a kid and I'm glad it came with the AK since it was always the "bad guy's" weapon of choice on all of the 80's action movies.

    I remember at one of the Joe Cons I attended, There was a panel discussing the early production stages of the ARAH line. The concept art for the trooper and officer were interesting. They looked more like Nazi soldiers and they lacked the masks. I believe that was Joe Con 2010.
    Great review as always man! Really digging those outros. Poor Cobra's never win eh? :( lol

    I think it's fine for them to be the same rank (Major) as the individual Cobras. Cobra as an organization, needs a stable command structure. One that Cobra Commander/Serpentor can rely on. The Individuals, while mercenaries like all of Cobra, are all in it for their own needs, or just barely associated like Storm Shadow, Destro, or the Drednoks.

  • @samfrito
    @samfrito 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    i love the brilliance of the ending spot. If Cobra was a true paramilitary organization you would think the trooper and officer roles would be better defined in the comic, but it was rare that those characters did much in the earlier issues other than pledge their allegiance to Cobra and frequently die. I do enjoy the officers portrayal in issue 36 (great comic for the early run). The ones on the atoll fighting the Killer Whale are at wits end, yet they give us food for thought about their purpose. Great review HCC, you did a thorough job detailing the figure and accessories. I never knew the Trooper came with a Dragonov sniper rifle. Gives me more respect for them. Kind of wish there was some form of Trooper figure later in the series, not to knock the vipers category.

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +sam torres Issue 36 was a really good comic book. The Cobra soldiers appeared throughout the comic book series (or at least up to the point I stopped reading), even when more specialized units were introduced. Larry Hama has said the Cobra soldiers and Vipers are the same thing-- same guys, different uniforms. But I prefer to think of them as separate units. Cobra soldiers are the fodder, probably the newest recruits. Vipers are shock troops with more tactical gear.

    • @samfrito
      @samfrito 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +HoodedCobraCommander788 Good point. The Vipers remind me of a SWAT team. Back to the officers and the troopers, your point about them being fodder is pretty apparent in the Yearbook #2 story with the Oktober Guard and the laser. Destro and Baroness seem to send them into the fray to assault the train without too much regard for the odds. And the troopers holler "COBRAAAA" and go for it. Maybe we should yell "COBRAAA" when trying to get seated for dinner at a busy restaurant.

    • @Thor13332
      @Thor13332 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +HoodedCobraCommander788 I agree. The less heavily armed Cobra soldiers I see as garrison troops and the Vipers are elite combat troops.

    Been rewatching a bunch of your old videos, they hold up well.
    I always thought the soldier should have had the AK and the officer the sniper rifle, also that the chest and back pieces should have been swapped also, so that the soldier had the full web gear and the officer had the sidearm and holster harness.

    The lack of Cobras on the early card back art, and missing from early TV commercials, hints that Goodwin's late suggestion of having bad guys resulted in the Cobra (no Trooper early on) and Cobra Officer being rushed into late production. I think this is why they were so similar to each other, and just had the one gun each, and no backpacks or helmets. Hasbro had no confidence in bad guys selling (just like female figures). They didn't even have any vehicles or artillery for them in '82, but probably had no time to produce them. Even in '83, they had the great HISS and FANG, and midling SNAKE armor, with a Cobra version of the glider thrown in. Only Destro, Major Bludd and the HISS Driver were added to Cobra.

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brett Fraser You're right. It wasn't until 1984 that Cobra really took off.

    • @brett8481
      @brett8481 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, there's finally vehicles in '83, but no army builder figures added to the Trooper and Officer. If you want to build HISS drivers and Viper Pilots at that time, you have to buy a lot of HISS tanks and Viper gliders.

    Another interesting character you should look into is the 1988 Iron Grenadier Nullifier. He was suppose to be a member of Cobra La originally and drive the Insecticycle, half motorcycle half rolly polly bug. There is a picture of it on yojoe.com.

    I remember a urban legend back in the 5th or 6th grade a fellow classmate mentioned seeing a female cobra trooper in stores similar to what was seen on the cartoon. Wasn't until yojoe.com and Ultimate Guide to G.I. Joe by Mark Bellomo that this was false.

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +affoster79 these legends are really interesting. I guess they reflect our expectations at the time. I would like to know what other myths were floating around among Joe fans back then.

  • @jamesthompson2329

    My theory would be that the Cobra Officer was suppose to be the Trooper and the Trooper was suppose to be the Officer. Just a thought.

  • @affoster79
    @affoster79 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well now you mention it I was talking to a guy just the other day who said big boa was suppose to be a rocky Balboa figure.

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +affoster79 That's right. Rocky was erroneously included in the Order of Battle mini-series, but plans for the figure fell through. I believe there are some grainy photos of a Rocky prototype somewhere.

    a superb review man yea the rare elusive no thumb version !!lmaoo...anyway yea I never could figure out why the officers had the machine guns and the grunts had the sniper rifles it would have made more sense in a way ...this guy was a favorite trooper though I think mostly because he had a machine gun !!wow I didn't know about the lack of the bad guys.... I know the 60's ones didn't really have any real counter nemesis like the 80's did I do remember all the repacks though the only other one I had was the one with the mortar..I actually had two grunts for each officer and two for cobra commander so I had six ...they got killed all the time though ...LOL...anyways this one going in the favorite vids man ..and really wouldn't mind winning that vamp ..LOL... hahahhahà!!looking forward to what's next nice job ...oh yea there is a modern scarface figure for the 25th anniversary I think he in a comic pack with the crimson guard Fred ..oh yea I dug that story about the variant "scar face " officer ...I did some similar thing with a stormtrooper figure I painted black ....hahahahahaaaa!!!

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +mgvillanmp478 You got one of the multi-packs with the Cobra Officer? Those are really rare now-- the boxes for them seem to be very hard to find. Not that I'm looking for one.
      Hasbro made a Scarface figure? I did not know that! I need to look that up!

      +HoodedCobraCommander788 yea i f remember right my brother gave me that one for Christmas back then ..yea check it out they did a decent job with him I think they are fairly priced on the aftermarket.. probably around 20$ -30$ maybe tops but yea it has him and "Fred" the first crimson guard...I think it's a decent set

    The officer uniform isn't as practical as the cobra soldiers. I guess the officers don't have to get as physical as the grunts do.

    I've always looked at their rank as far as cobras concerned with their pay scale. Seeing as how these guys are part of a terrorist organization it will be very well paid, makes sense
