I LOVED Double Dragon Neon back in the day! Beat it on every difficulty, with everything unlocked each time. I put about 14 hours into the game (it kept track of playtime).
that song TANGO MANGO, is one of the best songs in gaming ever, add to it that ending song.....they are both reason enough to play this game, and i will die on that hill, TANGO MANGO is so so so 80s to the bones and has amazing lyrics.
I effin second this. I literally impulse bought the game because of Tango Mango. It is in heavy rotation on my VG Playlist. R1 for at leaset 4 to 5 plays.
Some fun easter eggs, these versions of Billy & Jimmie appear in River City Girls as dojo instructors. Skullmageddon also has a shop in River City Girls... dood!
My favorite moment with Skullmageddon is h8m singing in the end credits. Poor guy just wanted a hug. Also, I got Marian to punch him in the end. I enjoyed every part of the game.😂
I love this game. It's a perfect homage to the insanity and silliness of coin-op arcade games from the 80s. Really brought me back. I love the soundtrack, too.
Just a reminder, IGN is also the same site that gave the magnificent God Hand a 3.0 out of 10 because, in their words, "bad graphics, game being too hard and unoriginal, the game's story is too nonsensical", yada yada yada... meanwhile they give Imagine Party Babiez a 7.5. IGN deserves to be laughed at for their ignorance and callous attitude towards games they want to run into the ground.
I remembered not liking it at first...but then I QUICKLY wised up when the demo ended with Skullmegeddon's dojo BLASTING OFF LIKE A ROCKET!! I knew at that moment, I was hooked and had to get the full game. Now, I can't see DD any other way! My brother and I affectionately call it "Bill & Ted's Double Dragon".
I’d love to someday see a dark, gritty, hyperrealistic Double Dragon game with Yakuza type controls. Seems like that would just be a natural progression. But I thought this game was fun and had a lot of clever nostalgia and satire.
I'll confess that i almost didn't give the game a chance when i first heard one of the brother's say,"Hey Bro! I'm here to help!" But my cousin convinced me otherwise and I'm glad he did. Your opinion on the sprites of the brothers in Neon is the same way i feel about the Double Dragon Gaiden ones Top Hat 🤔. I like how Neon also references how the brothers used to grab people and knee them in the face. That was missing from Neon for me. Shame on IGN! SHAME!
The one baffling omission in this game is grapple attacks. When I reflect on playing Double Dragon in the arcade as a child, my first thought is being able to grab an enemy by the hair and repeatedly knee him in the head. It was brutal and deeply satisfying, it was what first had me hooked. As for IGN, they've been an absolute joke for years. Skullmageddon's song during the end credits is so good that for a minute I legit thought it was recorded by Weird Al.
I love this game one of my all time faves. And Skullmagaddon Is definitely one of the greatest gaming villains in his iconic and silly way. It's great we get a bit more of him in the River City Girls games. I'm looking foreword to seeing more cameos in future games.
I loved this game upon its release! The reviews were way too harsh for something so fun! The excellent music and absurd humor more than make up for any shortcomings in the gameplay!
OG Double Dragon player here. Like, "Aladdin's Castle" arcade OG. Just try to test my mettle. When Double Dragon came out, I personally construed it as a gritty representation of 80's gang violence, which was popular for media to portray during that decade. When the "cartoon" was featured far later during the franchise's timeline, I was disturbed by how corny the characters of Billy and Jimmy were conveyed. Looking back on the original game, I can see how these protagonists unfortunately fit their silly mold but I was far more embracing of their grit. Whatever. Double Dragon became what it became. For Neon, if you couldn't tell already, I was turned off by the childish humor and antics of its cast. Despite this, the gameplay was spot-on to the original series, which I held in highest regard. It might seem clunky for modern gamers, but it has a classic react-to-this-with-that feel which I missed. As an additional asset, the music is phenomenal. Not only do they reintroduce the classical themes from 80's past, but the song from level 2 is a welcome melody I often revisit the game to hear again. In part, there is a lot about Double Dragon Neon I'm not cool with, but besides that, there was far more I enjoyed to overlook my dislikes. It truly is a great game.
I wouldn't be so sure about that. Games are complained about for various reasons. Nothing much has changed from 2011 to 2024 in terms of the fickle gaming community.
To this day me and my friends greet each other with "High five me bro!" This game gave me so much joy and still does. This is my favorite double dragon that i still play today trying to get all mixtapes maxed out. The replay value on this game game is insane!! Needless to say i love this game and always will.
I remember playing through the game the first time and thoroughly enjoying it, then playing through it again with a friend and having a blast! Oh yeah, that Training Wheels song is hilarious 🤣
I don’t remember hearing any outrage but I do remember IGN’s outrage over Sonic Generations. But I will say to me that Double Dragon Neon is the best DD game of the entire franchise, not including Gaiden(because I haven’t played it and have no knowledge of it). Just the presentation and sound of it make it one of the best beat-em ups of all time. It didn’t have to go so hard, it could have just been a simple side scrolling beat-em up, but we’re so glad it wasn’t
What?!?!? It's one of the best side scrollers in a LONG time. The controls are a little janky if you're not used to the style of game, think a side scroller version of dark souls. That slight delay, that almost adds some realism. The soundtrack is 80s gold. And skulmagedan, lol..... It's like Billy and jimmy are fighting against skeletor. It's awesome!
I can see the tongue-in-cheek tone of the game turning some people off or coming off as insincere. But the game is enjoyable and you can have a great time with it for what it is.
This game came out during the wrong era, a time when beat'em ups were extremely out of fashion, and it's a complete shame. Thankfully it's gotten a lot more attention and love ever since the genre has had a second coming. Growing up I was a huge fan of Double Dragon and all the adjacent titles so it's been an absolute pleasure to finally see one of my first gaming obsessions get it's due.
As a kid, I played this next to Contra in the local video store. I couldn't get enough of either. I had to play all the nes Double Dragon games, including Super Double Dragon (and River City Ransom). I loved this game when it came out, the visuals, the music, the gameplay. I did have a few minor complaints. I wish the game was longer, had a way to use the cassette music in the levels and had other modes or a way to remix the game. The game itself, however, was a blast, I bought it the first day and couldn't put it down. It's super addictive and Skullmageddeon was hilarious. I've often wondered what Pixel Dan or Shanieology thinks of him. I prefer the style of this game to Double Dragon Gaiden. I hope we get a sequel someday, although I think it's highly unlikely.
Thanks for making this video, I never understood the backlash of this game, it is VERY enjoyable for me, born and growing up in the 80´s, I am VERY fond of beat'em-ups. I was not aware of all of this. It all makes sense now. Neon is AWESOME!
Please do videos on the two D&D beat em ups, the bouncer, urban reign, mortal kombat shaolin monks, the scott pilgrim vs the world game, dragon's crown, & mighty morphin power rangers mega battle
I have loved this game since the day it first released digitally on PS360. I have always felt that you have to play it with the mentality that it isn't trying to be some sort of "true successor" to the series; rather it is more of a spoof on not just DD, but on late 80's/early 90's pop culture as whole. I wanted a physical version of this game for so long and was ecstatic when LRG finally did it (bought the CE version for myself).
They finally put a port of Double Dragon Advance on Steam and the Xbox Store in November, which is THE BEST DD game and also supports two-player (maybe no online though). They also are selling Super Double Dragon. Both are like $7 USD.
I had a great time with it. It is a little annoying how some relatively minor enemies carry through their attacks while being struck to force the player to use the "evade" button, but it mostly means getting used to a fighting system that is, admittedly, a good deal more complicated than the arcade original's three-button layout. The graphics, sounds, and sense of humor were all fantastic. Incidentally (at the risk of being "that guy") the "Deus" in "Deus Ex" (or "Deus Ex Machina") is pronounced like "Day-us", not "Deuce".
The only issue I had at the time of release was difficulty/the amount of grinding needed to make any real progress. BUT when I replayed it from scratch after buying again on Switch, knowing all the secrets and tricks, I beat it on first run, so turns out I just needed to git gud!
Hey Top Hat. Love your beat’em up retrospectives. I was wondering if you’d do a retrospective on Dragon’s Crown or Vanillaware as a whole. Maybe even Arcsys since they own some beat’em ups licenses as well as fighting games.
I recognize The artstyle of the game, I discovered them like 10 years ago, but I can't remember the name. Maybe Genzoman? I'm not sure. But I definitely recognize it.
I remember downloading this game on psn a couple years ago and its not bad, something just felt off with the gameplay. Might have to revisit it cuz people seem to really like this one.
I never got to play this game (didn’t have any of the systems it was available on) but I loved watching gameplay videos of it. I most likely would have loved playing it if I did have it. The only thing I don’t like about it was the portrayal of the Lee Brothers as meathead himbo dudebro rockers.
Only things I remember potentially causing outrage is how it is more of a platformer beat'em up. And the platforming issues become kind of a nightmare in co-op as if those sections with co-op were ignored when they did any kind of QA or playtesting.
First rule: Never EVER turn Double Dragon into a 2D fighting game instead of a 2.5D fighting game. It takes away the charm, originality and uniqueness of the classic games. Also, Double Dragon V is a lame World Heroes 2 rip-off, that's based on that off-brand cartoon.
Double Dragon Neon did the 80's nostalgia right. They did change things needlessly, they had classic tracks redon and even original songs. When that Battletoads came out it was done the wrong way. Tracks sounded like YT mixes, it looked like a modern Calarts cartoon with the (or lack of) humor. There's a first person game out now that tries to vulture the 80's nostalgia, but it looks extremely modern with all the typical types of artstyle. I have to imagine the reason why there was outrage over DDN, is most likely due to Marian being gut-checked and kidnapped in the beginning instead of being an overpowered playable character. Something Wayforward has just to absolve that sin by making her such in the River city girls series while making Billy and Jimmy nobodies, and sadly being voiced by Arin Hanson. A worse sin.
20:54 Yeah. I remember. I also remember that I and a lot of kids my age were eventually able to beat many of those arcade beat-em-ups like Punisher, X-Men, Final Fight, Bucky O'Hare, Moonwalker etc on the strength of 1 coin. All without whining that the difficulty level was too high.. IGN needs to stop encouraging mediocrity.
As a current freelance games journalist, it's wholly possible that the title got into that particular IGN writer's hands simply because he had time in his writing schedule while others did not. Sometimes someone who an editor may assign a title to is working on another title, and we barely get time to finish games as it is, if at all, before it's on to the next one, so it may have been simply kicked down the line. In sites I've written for, we usually get asked our particular game preferences, but we're on notice that we may be asked to review any game, any genre (dependent on hardware, of course). That being said, I still give great respect when it comes to IGN's credibility, but they were completely wrong when it comes to DD Neon. It's a winner from top to bottom.
Sick part 5 was sick I loved the movie and the cartoon was the shit the power up and the wall uhh u ain’t wrong but that’s all we had to beat ‘em up final fight for Xbox with Cody’s bro was sick 😮stay up bro ❤

Is there an affiliate link for Double Dragon Gaiden for the $9.87 price?
Outrage? I think it's the best Double Dragon game to date. Amazing 80s style with songs with lyrics, deep gameplay, replayability...
I disagree
@@cheshire_skatkat9093 it's ok to desagree. I love all the franchise. Except Double Dragon III.
IGN be IGN-ing. In other news, water is wet.
@@SylveonTrapito i like DD3 on NES, dont like on Arcade, the gameplay is terrible
Definitely.
Soundtrack was great. I still use the song. Mango Tango Neon Jungle as my ringtone... dood!
The soundtrack is about as perfect as it can get for a game
Lol I'm glad I am not the only one who still uses this as a ringtone, well except for my partner who I use The Hunt from River City Girls for.
As they say, can't spell IGNORANT without IGN.
It´s a great game. In co-op it´s perfection.
I've never played it with a friend, but now I have to because I believe you.
I always enjoy when Top Hat talks Double Dragon. I loved Neon and beat it every couple years.
that song TANGO MANGO, is one of the best songs in gaming ever, add to it that ending song.....they are both reason enough to play this game, and i will die on that hill, TANGO MANGO is so so so 80s to the bones and has amazing lyrics.

Also the timing of the trophy/achievement pop was *chefs kiss*
Outrage!? I still love this game, specially the freakin' soundtrack! Jake Kaufman nailed it!
Some Virt"s best work. I love how even though it's not chiptune he still keeps it old-school.
I love this game. It's a perfect homage to the insanity and silliness of coin-op arcade games from the 80s. Really brought me back.
I love the soundtrack, too.
Wish I could play it on PS5 without paying that subscription.
I bought the game, waiting for my brother to return to our hometown and we played the game from start to finish in one setting. Just like old times.
"Too much water."
-IGN
I wouldn't be surprised if Neon was what eventually led to the resurgence of the River City franchise.
Outrage!?! In my opinion Double Dragon Neon is better then Gaiden Rise of the Dragon.
I 💯 agree and was sadly disappointed to find out it wasn't similar.
I loved the heck out of this game and still boot up my PS3 every once in a while to play it.
It released digitally on Switch a couple years back, and LRG even did a physical version.
I recently got a Steam Deck and have been playing it there.
This is now on Switch. I might have to DOUBLE dip here!!
Best Double Dragon game until Billy and Jimmy is added to River City Girls 2
Wow, it's been 12 years since this game came out. Need to get though it for another round... got it on the Switch some where around here.
Skullmageddon was a bizarre and wonderful cross between He-Man's Skeletor, The Venture Brothers' "The Monarch", and Yoshimitsu from the Tekken series.
If Double Dragon Neon came out this year, nobody would complain about it.
Good point!
I wouldn't be so sure about that. Games are complained about for various reasons. Nothing much has changed from 2011 to 2024 in terms of the fickle gaming community.
How so? From what I remember playing, its a decent game but not a really great one.
@SolidSnake240 I assumed it came out before the beat em up trend rose to this year.

Agree about your IGN comment. This game is great fun and the soundtrack is unforgettable. Everyone should at least try this one.
17:00 That was my favorite part too! I nearly fell off the sofa laughing at how they timed it!
I can see the tongue-in-cheek tone of the game turning some people off or coming off as insincere. But the game is enjoyable and you can have a great time with it for what it is.
if you like double dragon this is a MUST play

I ended loving neon WAY more than I thought I would. Good DD game. Tango Mango is fire

That karaoke ending sounds like weird Al And skeletor.❤
IGN wrote something embarrassingly out of touch? It must have been a day of the week ending in “Y”.
I still listen to this game soundtrack. Banger. Game wasn't too bad. Either beat it a couple times Solo and played with a buddy a bunch of times.
Please do videos on the two D&D beat em ups, the bouncer, urban reign, mortal kombat shaolin monks, the scott pilgrim vs the world game, dragon's crown, & mighty morphin power rangers mega battle

Double Dragon 5 RULES!!!!!!!!🐉🐉
It also caused outrage because it's missing Roper..... Yeeeeaaaah!!!!!!!!
It's the dough Roper, or we gotta break something! 🤣😂🤣 Do you know where this quote comes from?
DOMINATRICES! lol great video as always. love the long/er form retrospectives
Hmmm...
I completely loved doubl dragon neon, especially the music and comedic ironic story. Heck i enjoyed beating it on all difficulty levels 🫡💯👍🏾.
Unforgettable game. Throwing an afro comb at Skullmageddon. And that proper good tune Mango Tango.
I had a great time with it. It is a little annoying how some relatively minor enemies carry through their attacks while being struck to force the player to use the "evade" button, but it mostly means getting used to a fighting system that is, admittedly, a good deal more complicated than the arcade original's three-button layout. BUT when I replayed it from scratch after buying again on Switch, knowing all the secrets and tricks, I beat it on first run, so turns out I just needed to git gud!
I don’t remember any outrage for this one, I thought it was great. It had an amazing soundtrack and I loved the bosses!!!
"video game reviewers" at IGN ripped it badly, that's the outrage he's referring to
They should have named him Shredator
Not so bad beating even the hardest difficulty as long as you level up Training Wheels.
And the fuzzball makes it pretty easy.
The only outrage this amazing game caused was IGN's horrible review on YT.
Hey Top Hat. Love your beat’em up retrospectives.
I was wondering if you’d do a retrospective on Dragon’s Crown or Vanillaware as a whole.
Maybe even Arcsys since they own some beat’em ups licenses as well as fighting games.
I honestly love this game. I still play it
I don't recall any outrage? I mean, who pays any attention to IGN? This game fucking rocked.
I really enjoyed this game, so much fun 😊
I loved it. It wasnt as serious as I imagined double dragon to be but it was still cool.
I recognize The artstyle of the game, I discovered them like 10 years ago, but I can't remember the name. Maybe Genzoman? I'm not sure. But I definitely recognize it.
I enjoyed greatly DD Neon back on Xbox 360, would love to see it re-release on ps4/5.
Never thought I’d see an eastenders reference on a Double Dragon video of all things.
I remember downloading this game on psn a couple years ago and its not bad, something just felt off with the gameplay. Might have to revisit it cuz people seem to really like this one.
Nice video. I got DD neon on my PS3 and I played the hell out of it.
I never got to play this game (didn’t have any of the systems it was available on) but I loved watching gameplay videos of it. I most likely would have loved playing it if I did have it. The only thing I don’t like about it was the portrayal of the Lee Brothers as meathead himbo dudebro rockers.
Neon was freaking awesome
Bought this a special/collectors edition for the switch, limited run games!
Thought about it too, wish they had figures. It's still awesome though.
Super double dragon is the best ever I hope you make a video of that
Only things I remember potentially causing outrage is how it is more of a platformer beat'em up.
And the platforming issues become kind of a nightmare in co-op as if those sections with co-op were ignored when they did any kind of QA or playtesting.
I don't think Double Dragon V was that bad. Largely a discount Street Fighter with fatalities.
First rule:
Never EVER turn Double Dragon into a 2D fighting game instead of a 2.5D fighting game.
4:21 I thought it was Bimmy and Jimmy? Never mind.
Bimmy and Jimmy
Part of its problem is it was too ahead of the curve on the beat em up resurgence. Though Castle Crashers came out about the same time.
The only issue I have with this game is that the combat is kind of stiff. Great game, but Double Dragon Advance is way better.
I'll admit, I didn't get Neon at first and almost gave up on it. I'm glad I didn't, this game was fantastic.
This game looks good. Never heard of it before now.
It looks pretty cool to me. I'll try it soon.
I really like the game, i wanted double dragon neon 2 since i finished the game and i want to play it on my PS5 without any suscription 😢😢
Omg. What a great video. I loved the game. And you were spot on when taking about IGN.
Thanks for the video Mr Top Hat😊😊
Sick part 5 was sick I loved the movie and the cartoon was the shit the power up and the wall uhh u ain’t wrong but that’s all we had to beat ‘em up final fight for Xbox with Cody’s bro was sick 😮stay up bro ❤
I just started playing this one after playing DD Gaiden. It’s not bad! A little cheesy but it’s DD!
Love the game for the reasons you outlined. IGN have a lot of bad takes. Not sure why they are so popular.
i wish they make a sequel of this the new one is just different
Oh brother, Every game causes outrage for God's sake👎👎
"video game reviewers" at IGN ripped it badly, that's the outrage he's referring to
I loved this game so much, mostly because of the awesome baddy
