Great blue heron predation by bald eagle (warning, it's not pretty)

  • The fannini subspecies of great blue heron lives in coastal British Columbia and is blue-listed (of "special concern") in this province. Two of their main threats are human activities, which disturb or destroy both their nesting habitat and their feeding areas, and predation by bald eagles.
    This video clip documents a bald eagle attacking a great blue heron nest and killing one of the two chicks. It's not the kind of footage you would watch for "fun" (so there, you've been warned) but it is of scientific interest. This predation event took place at a small great blue heron nesting colony in July, 2020.

    I was fishing the great backwater of the Mississippi River near Lansing, Iowa. My buddy and I were trolling along the shoreline of one of many channels where you can get lost from the main river if you're not careful. I look up ahead and see this incredible Bald Eagle setting on a tree limb about twenty feet above us as we passed under. Its claws were easily the size of a grown man's hand. Later that same day I caught a Sheephead junk fish that swallowed the hook. I cut the line and threw it back. It was floating dead in the water when a Great Blue Heron swooped it up. I couldn't help but think that bird will die when it try's to pass that hook. I felt bad and realized not to make that mistake again.

There were about 42 eggs laid in that colony - and only eight of the chicks survived the eagles. @@golfandhike5598 It was quite a surprise. I don't normally do video - had been taking stills of the herons defending. Had lots, decided to turn the video function on, and WHUMP - this is the whole unedited video, the eagle was right there. Yes, it sure is great to be able to get out and hang our with wildlife - now more than ever!

    Stanley Park, we see this every spring. Ask the tennis community, large nesting colony adjacent to the tennis courts. Man is not the threat, eagles and crows.

    • @jacquelinewindh
      @jacquelinewindh  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Man" actually is the threat. The predation thing, eagles etc. eating herons, has been going on for millenia. But the fact that our human "land developments" are reducing habitat means that there is less and less area for herons to nest - so instead of equilibrium predation, the herons get more exposed to attach and there is increasing predation. Each heron pair needs only two chicks - out of ALL the eggs they lay over the years - to survive in order to maintain the same equilibirum population (just two, to relace themselves). So "normal" totally is that dozens of their babies get eaten by eagles or whatever. But, for example, in this colony, there is both new town development and new logging that is reducing the area they can nest in, so that they are getting more and more exposed to eagle attack. The year I filmed this, eight chicks (out of 40-some) survived the eagle predation. As far as I can tell, last year none survived.

  • @outlander3000
    @outlander3000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    At least they had another baby, I guess. I take it the adults are out...because there's just the two. I thought it was a parent at first but I think they would've put up a bigger fight. Anyway, I'd hate to see in person. I clicked on this to hear the demonic screaming.
