A late comment but I did this road on my X7 and in my Accord.
On the bike I was whooping with joy and happiness inside my helmet.
In the car I was just waiting for it to end, although a bit if a hangover was hurting me.
Amazing views over to Mt Ruapahu(?) and very little traffic.
Little 250 was a joy on this road.

Yeah, not quite as enjoyable on four wheels. And not as enjoyable if your are unlucky and find yourself stuck behind another vehicle.

Great ride, lovely views, and looks like you don't have to share the road too much which is a major factor as far as I am concerned.

That's one of the good things about living down this way. The amount of traffic is pretty low.

Hi BV, I'm a bit late finding this video, but loved it. Back in the 70's I had my one & only car crash on this road, just a minor "fender bender" but scary nonethless. The road was mostly gravel back then so not so enjoyable on a bike. A suggestion for your collection of back-roads, have you been through the Ohuka Rd? It's off SH38 (Wairoa to Waikaremoana / Murupara)? From the turnoff at Ohuka it climbs the Ohuka hill with awesome views of the huge valley near Okare. The road is mostly gravel but is worth it for the views. It comes down into the Ruakituri valley to Te Reinga, then turns left towards Gisborne or right to Frasertown & Wairoa.

Waikaremoana is high on my list of areas to explore. So I'll definitely followup on your suggestion. I was just in that neck of the woods. Rode Tiniroto Rd through to Gisborne and stopped at Te Reinga Falls. Then went north to Opotiki - awesome roads. I'll have to check out Ohuka Rd before all the tourists come back.

@@theNZbv Most of the traffic on the Ohuka Rd is farm workers & adventure bikes so you're pretty safe. The Tiniroto Rd's good. If you get the urge to explore that area further you can turn off the Tiniroto Rd at the Tiniroto Tavern & go through the Ruakaka Rd. The Hackfalls Arboretum is worth a visit if you're into trees etc. Ruakaka Rd takes you back to the Tiniroto Rd at Doneraille Park (I'm not sure if there's still free camping there, it used to be a great spot next to the river). Further towards Gisborne is the Tahunga - Pehiri Rd, a great gravel road ride that does a big loop & brings you down through the Ngatapa valley to the roundabaout where the Tiniroto Rd meets the main highway just out of Gisborne.

Another "must do" for you would be the Motu Rd from Matawai (75Km towards Opotiki from Gisborne), then back around East Cape to Gisborne. There's a great holiday park at Te Araroa to break the trip.

I’ve just done it also, and recorded many of the exact same bits. It’s an incredible road.

I think I'll have to do it again soon. Maybe do the big triangle - Napier, Taupo, Taihape, back to Napier.

Biker Virgin You’ll have to video it. As I’ve not done the Napier Taupo Rd yet. ;-). Great vids.

Its a good road to ride in summer of you live in Hawkes Bay but its nothing compared to riding in the Corromandel or many of the roads down south.
