Today I got install and listen to the Focal 165AS3 for the first time.

Dude, this really is one hell of a solid channel if you keep up the badass work with all the explicitly detailed explanations. People seem to forget that when it comes to almost any trade or hobby focused around working with your hands (audio or not), the devil is always in the details.

Nice to see not only a clean install, but proper evaluation and fine tune/dampening of the system post installation.
It is very good to see. I spent really good money to have a sound system installed once, never again, when i later dug into it, the installer had just taped the head unit in, the car came with standard brackets that work perfect with an after market unit yet they still just taped it.
That's why i always install myself now, Its ok if i do something dodgy like that on my own car, but i'm sure as hell not paying someone else to do a dodgy.
I like to mount the x-overs closest to the front of the door ( if in the door at all ) so there is less shock on the components, mounted in the x-over, when the doors are shut.

That foam you scraped off was meant to help direct the sound into the cabin instead of echoing around inside the door panel. Definitely something that should have been replaced with new material. Could be part of the reason the midrange sounded more muffled and hollow.

Ford Probe's also had 5x7's in the rear but 6x9's will fit as long as the set you get is not to bulky and you drill a couple of holes for mounting.
I bought 2 set of those .can you advise if PIONEER GM-D1004 amp will the right amp for it ? Love your video

What is you opinion on something like these vs 2 way at the same price? Worth getting something like this and upgrading later or sticking with higher quality 2 ways?
So, I'm thinking about getting this set to go in my 2006 (Mk5) Jetta 2.0T. It has a factory Dynaudio 3-way component set up in the front doors and 2-way components in the rear doors. Have you done any installs in Mk5 Jettas or GTIs with this kit and setup? Would I need any adapters for mounting? I've been reading conflicting comments in various reviews and forums on the topic.
how are these Focal entry level speakers comparing to Infinity Kappa Perfect speakers?
The thing that I think you’re missing is that these speakers have a much higher power rating than those factory amplifier speakers. If you were to add aftermarket amplification, you would hear a much bigger divide between the mcintosh system and the aftermarket focal system. Put 125-150 watts to those focals and you would have greater performance compared to what I’m wagering is about 15-40watts per channel on the factory amplifier.
Given that they’re 80rms 160 watt peak.
I just bought some Focal speakers based mostly on your opinions on them, and am trying to figure out whether or not it would be a good idea to mount the tweeters in the angled housings, on the dash facing towards the center of the car. They would be a few feet from driver and passenger ears, but I am slightly worried they will be too glaring. Is it better to mount them in the factory A pillar location shooting across the dash side to side? Or is facing more towards the listener a better idea?
Nice job. It's not easy to make something fit that wasn't designed to. Your sound got a little out of sync at about the 45:00 minute mark. That happens to me all the time when I use my iPhone 7 I don't know why. It's a real pain to get it synced back up to. At least in premier pro with my level of video editing knowledge.
Great video, so I’m thinking of getting these speakers but now that you said about the flax would be better I’m confused. I listen to trance music and I hate vibration. Would you Reccomended the flax cone for trance listeners or the access series 165 ?
The Flax would definitely be better but if you don’t sound deaden you’re doors as a minimum you’d be wasting your money buying quality speakers as it defeats the purpose!

@@myluxuryreview3785 sorry to hear, what didnt you like? I have a Focal set up in my wifes car and pretty happy with them. I personally run Morel speakers in my car and I love them dont think I can ever part with any other speakers other than Morel for my personal drive.
And idea of Focal 165AS3 fits Honda Civic 2016 10th generation model? I am suspecting that it doesn't has the space for the mid.

I'm curious if you have heard alpine type r 6.5 component speakers and how you think these compare to the alpines? My last car had type r's so that's my reference point.
Type R are better in the way that they were bassier, louder and easier to install.
For me its a trade off cos I love myself any 3-way set of speakers, the midrange just changes the listening experience completely.
Hi everybody, i have Range Rover velar with 380w meridian 11 speakers. I need to ask in the front door i have 1 tweeter,1 midrange and 1 woofer and i need to change them with focal es 165 kx3 i must use the filter of focal for a good sound or i keep the factory output.
you can get them for 200€ now, its a very good starter system. especially if you want to dip your toes into fully active systems with a dsp because it wont make you cry if you fry a tweeter! :P
I’m torn between this focal and the flax evo I’m not sure if the extra money for the flax is worthy....

I need 12 speakers.. for my range rover. Almost bought flax.. then saw these .. now I guess I need to get flax. 🤣 just 12 speakers is a ton of cash.. maybe flax front and these other focal in the rear. I won't ever sit I the rear anyway
Are you sure that the two tweeters dont divide the frequencies? Like one tweeter takes the highest noises and the other takes a bit lower ones?
+kakka626 well the focal tweeters will be receiving a high passes signal from the focal passive crossover and The McIntosh tweeters are receiving full range but they have a capacitor mounted onto it so the signal gets high passed there.
So ok not sure why it sounded like the McIntoshes went higher, maybe just a better frequency response?

My guess is that they used two relatively high impedance tweeters at different mounting locations in an attempt to improve staging and articulation without making it too ridiculously harsh. If you could reasonably replace them both with matched tweeters of suitable resistance, it wouldn't be a terrible idea to keep that setup, but it is definitely overkill.
which would sound better, these or the 2way flax series?
You will have more mid bass punch which I truly love in a focal 3 way kit. Also you cant go wrong with anything focal. I do recommend removing the grill part on a tweeter but thats my opinion my ears like better.
Which would you go for to install without amp: Hertz, Focal, Rockford? I have Kenwood DPX 1000 DAB, I am looking on 6.5”, also...components or coax? Appreciate all opinions and advice. Stay safe people!
It really depends on your budget, if you want a cheap set of coax speakers that will give a lot of components a run for their money try Morels Maximo ultra coax.
I doubt anything McIntosh is anything but flat EQ. Not all watts are created equally and McIntosh is world renowned for being power houses. It is not a fair comparison between an Alpine and OEM McIntosh IMO. I looove Alpine headunits because of their great SNR however with my experience in home HiFi, there's a reason $500K speakers are demo'd with McIntosh amps. TLDR: McIntosh is amazing.
Should try some morel 3 ways or 2 ways james i want your opinions.

Good solid install but I think your client would be better off getting replacement drivers from the dealer... Was disappointed myself by the focals based on your comments, 250$ for a set of speakers is not cheap. Next up is the AS 165F3 for double the price where the bass driver is too deep and won't fit most cars...
Gplus sucks big Not sure if you’re serious or simply trolling for a dealership......but $250 has been entry level pricing for a while now. Focal makes a great product and will outperform a stock speaker if installed properly. $250 for Focals is dirt cheap.

our supplier gets them direct from france so that would probably explain the price.
after talking focal prices on yt for a while now it seems Focal is actually pretty affordable in NZ.
Of course any time we want something US made it costs heaps!

EPIC FAIL: dude just installed 4Ω system, but factory McIntosh system was 8Ω, thats why result is not good enough,
its should be complete multimedia replace.
Take off hat when testing.. covering your ears or adjusting your lobes will chage sound .
