    Hey Guys!
    Today I finally finished off the installation of my Focal PS-165f3 3-way component speakers in the front of my Legacy.
    I got the new crossovers mounted and wired in the back, and to fit the 3" mids in the dashboard I had to dremmel the whole a bit bigger, and getting the mounting screw in was a nightmare! But it was all worth it because now it sounds simply AMAZING!
    Perfect clarity, and rich deep bass coming from just two 6.5" woofers.
    All thats left to do is continue sound deadening the rear floor, the rear wheel arches, and possibly the roof.
    Choose to be Happy & I will see you tomorrow.

    Go active and remove the crossovers and get a processor and you will be blown away how much better it will sound.

    You did a fine job on explaining the sound of CD vs vinyl. I just discovered your channel yesterday, so I do not yet know what you have covered thus far. If you have not covered dynamic range or compression, I suggest you put together a video on that. Digital media like CDs or DVDs have high dynamic range, but you lose the benefits of it when you compress your music too much. Also, all CDs have noise below 20 hz, so a subsonic filter is always a benefit regardless how the system is set up.
    For the analog media, audiophiles love vinyl for several reasons. One is they claim it sounds "warmer" and two, the nostalgia of the clicks and pops you hear bring back fond memories of their younger years. I agree with this along with hearing the "hissing" sound on a cassette...ahh, the 80's and recording what I heard on the radio when the DJ finally stopped talking...
    I recommend you find some audiophiles of older generations and interview them on their thoughts on what they used growing up compared to what's available today. That would open your eyes to a lot of the industry and help you understand more of why audiophiles do what they do.

    Little tip for if/when you get a dsp, try avoid relying on eq, level matching each channel and then fine tuning with eq is probably the better option. You’ll find when the car is active you can get the midbass to sound like they’re higher up if time aligned well relative to the midrange, tough to really describe but in my car I remember when tuning it there was a point where the midbass almost felt as if it started coming from the a pillar rather than the door, then once the other side was set up everything comes from the dash.
    If you end up going active just don’t forget you’ll need another amp to run all 6 channels up front, not sure what you’d do about the rear speakers as a good 90% of processors are 8 channels with only a few being 10 which you’d probably need unless you go without rears.

    Great video James. Sadly bud. You’re discovering the reason I can’t stand focal tweeters. I love the mids and midbass. I’d suggest a L-Pad to lower the level on tweeters. Otherwise as you know active will fix it. But the l-pad is much cheaper I’d say -3db will a good start.

    The roof's insonoration is 70% more bass, I did it and the difference is enormous. All the sound is cleaner and the bass is much deeper.

    First off, thanks for the comment shout out the other day. It is definitely not just your videos with the audio and video sync issue. Roadkill, Amplified, and all the other videos I watch are having the same issue. I have noticed it is worse on my iOS products than my Android products. By the way, I have Fast Rings in my car and I could possibly help you get a set of two to New Zealand.

    I love your youtube videos here in Arizona, USA! So I have to replace the blower motor as it died. It's currently our summer and the temp is 46.111 degrees C. here! I'm not looking forward to the work, but I'm saving like $2,000 in labor - so it's worth the sweat since the part is only like $75.

    Hi, good video.
    Few tips: use proper audio format for such a good set of speakers, at least FLAC or the best: Hi-res audio played from for example: Astell&Kern but connected via proper cable not Bluetooth. The thing is that MP3 and other compressed audio formats, always cuts the bottom and top frequencies and rise up what’s left. The second thing, when using the EQ try to not rise anything above 0db but decrease opposite. For example if you want more low freq, decrease top and mids. Believe me that’s the golden rule with any EQ and it will sound much better. Nothing offensive, just my two cents ;)

    Mate, if you want more control of each individual speaker you might have to go the whole hog and install an audison Bit one/Bit10 and get tweeking!

  • @FlorianFloimair
    @FlorianFloimair 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why didn't you use the sheet metal nuts that come with the focals in the dash? This way the screws hold much better and the whole thing clamps itself into the plastic (like it was with the previous tweeter).

    • @caraudioetc
      @caraudioetc  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Florian Floimair those are what we call speed clips and they were designed for the 8 gauge screws that came with the kit for holding on the mid bass woofers.
      The mids came with their own little self tapping screws barely 2mm across. And the holes in the basket only allow for these thin ones to go in.
      And they really don’t need that much security.
      They are very light weight and sitting flat on a surface that they can’t fit through with 3-4 screws threaded through plastic that aren’t coming out in a hurry and there is a cover over them.
      I don’t think they’re going anywhere.

  • @arose60
    @arose60 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding the tweeter issue, I’d go on a limb and say it could be related to the phase, when time aligning my tweeters relative to the midrange in mine I found that at a particular setting the tweeter on the drivers side flat out nailed me, add a hair of delay to it and it was all good. Considering that info, try run both tweeters in yours at -3db and wire the drivers side tweeter out of phase, I know in theory it seems counter intuitive but if you want things to sound more even, you may find flipping the phase on that tweeter helps with the overall sound.

    hey audiophiles!
    I'm about to install a decent focal 3 way.
    (the 165as3)
    I'm planing to put the mids onto the dashboard, playing into the windshield.
    is that a good idea? or should I put them into the door boards?
    and how do you guys calculate the box size for the mids? do you even need one?
    biginner questions i know.
    currently I run a ground zero 2 way front of my headunit.
    I'm so not happy with the sound.
    rockfort dsr1 already orderd and some random amps sitting around.
    soooo I gues I first put an dsp and amp onto my actual system and then I upgrade the shite out of it. 😅

  • @guitarman3100

    Do you think you're getting any cancellation with the midrange? Due to the hole just to the side of the basket that looks like it would let through the backwave . I had this issue in my 06 GTI with the midrange just being mounted to the inner door card. Installed a foam ring on the woofer and all better

    • @caraudioetc
      @caraudioetc  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +liquidfun I doubt it.
      The mid ranges actually don’t move that much so there is very little air flow around them.
      Like tweeters they do t need a well sealed enclosure to work well.

      No the sensor for the air conditioner is in the front grill of the car. It's for the automatic lights you throw something over the top of it and cover it up your dash lights will dim because it thinks it's night time.

    • @scott192
      @scott192 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      no, air temp sensors will be near air flows not where the sun will shine, usually in the dash or on the headliner

      forgot to mention, I got a single cab truck and the Focal PS 165F3 speakers are the only ones I am installing, (no rear) and of course an other amp with sub, (jet to be determined). I got the sub amp and I got 4 Rockford 8 subs that I had in my four door Rubicon, but I don't know if to use does 8s. or go with something else.

    Don't you wish it was a simple thing to take out and replace a windshield!!! Would have made that a lot easier. I've always tried to keep my mids and tweets close together and on the same plane. One you're off the plane and speakers are bouncing off the windshields, phase/dispersion/time alignment challenges kick in in unpredictable ways. Just my experience. Cheers!

    • @caraudioetc
      @caraudioetc  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +endall39 easier to get the mids in yes, but given I have no idea how to remove a windshield, no I don’t think it would have made it easier.

      I’ve never listened 2 the Flax 3 way components and have been spoiled by the K2 Power ES165KX3s.
      I kept my system as a single amplifier and a shop in La Mesa, CA installed an additional battery.
      Source : DEXP99RS
      Amplifier: Alpine PDXV9
      The components are running in a bi-amplified configuration from an ultra pristine sounding Pioneer Stage 4.

      @zeke937 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, I've been having a hard time picking between the new K2 (ES 165KX2) and the Flax series for my 09 Nissan Altima. I know it's an apples to oranges comparison but would you personally take your Ps165 F3's (the 3 component set) over a 2 component set like the KX2's? I had a listen to the KX2's at my local car audio shop and tbh they were disappointing to say the least, not sure if it was the tuning but something about the midrange sounded off almost like a good portion of the upper mids were brought a bit too forward creating a midrange that sounded really unnatural (but not fatiguing), so while the mids were more upfront than the regular ps165F set I listened to they were beaten by the Flax in terms of overall depth, the bass (while subjective) had more of a kick on them as well . The only reason I haven't totally crossed the KX2's off my list is because it's supposed to be their 2nd highest set and given that I expect them to excel in terms of technical capabilities, the tweeters were set to 0, I didn't find the listening fatiguing in any way though. I thought it would be best to get your thoughts on this.

    Are you listening to your phone through Bluetooth? I have tested my pioneer system with both Bluetooth and Android Auto. Android Auto sounds so much better since the sound is routed via the USB connection without the BT compression. I'm also using Google Music at the best setting 320kb.
    Try connecting your phone directly. It sounds like you have an apple phone. That stereo should have Carplay.
