It fulfilled their desires to "be the best" and to lead, but it also kept them in the OR. And then you have people like Webber and Meredith, who are just as skilled as Bailey and Derek. But unlike them, Webber and Meredith have this ability to see the bigger picture, and have all the right skills to make it work.

At least Derek was able to see after a short time that he just wasn't cut out for the job and gave it back to Richard. Bailey on the other hand was chief from S12 all the way to S18. That's 6 years, and during that time, she barely if ever admitted on making a mistake as a leader for the hospital.
Don’t forget about Karev who had the interns run the numbers and such paperwork cause he had surgeries to do. I loved that no one else thought to use the interns.

This is one of the better exposition scenes I have seen in a while. Serves a purpose in moving the current story forward, shows Mer is killing it as Chief (of course), and catches us on six months of Mer, Nick and even Zola!
That was funny, Schmit was going to ask to be the Chief Resident but Meredith didn't hesitate giving it to him. Like I know what ya want already, beside who else does he have to fight with for the position? Also there is no where else the Residency Program can go but up!!!
Also gotta recognize Schmitt’s loyalty like he could have gone to another residency program and he probably would had been by now just months away from his boards to become an attending/fellow but he decided to stay in OB (which he hated) and wait til the residency program opened up 👏
The willingness to be involved in another’s person life or private space forcefully without approval is annoyance to me that’s what she did in the early seasons. She wanted to know every detail in another person’s life and gets upsets.
Whilst Zola calling Nick would have been adorable, I get why Maggie didn't let her. What would have been better is that giving Maggie an idea and calling him herself! Although I would have wanted to see that scene. 😆

Having her go behind Meredith's back and call Nick would just fuel the hate people have for her saying that she had no right (because she doesn't) yada yada yada.
In the end the only person who should have called him is Meredith, and that's the only person I think he would have come for. Maggie was right not to interfere, and to keep Zola from calling him too.

But I must say I really enjoyed the first episode. A lot of nostalgia and I love Meredith as chief! I like the new interns and what each one brings to the show. I’m excited to see how this season unfolds and what direction the show is going to take.
I think the writers need to actually know how UNOS and the match lists work to write transplant scenes, then find their plot suspense elsewhere. Ridiculous scenes like this create an incorrect, and negative, public perception.
Human's have a great capacity to love. Someone can declare a person the "love of their life" only based on what they know up to their present. They have no way of knowing the validity of such a statement until the end of their life. Still, life and time only move in one direction, forward. A person has a choice after a loss, to keep living and be open to new things or to shut themselves off to certain aspects of life--such as romantic companionship.
