My twins spent a couple of weeks in the NICU, the medical bill we got for their approximately 6 week stay was *more than we make in a year* I literally cannot fathom how we would've coped without medicaid. Edit: I got curious and pulled out the bills they sent me--10 years. For the two of them to be in the nicu for just over a month. It was 10 years worth of what my husband was making at the time.

Yup, can 100% relate...had a bad lung infection a few years ago where I was required to be hospitalized due to State law mandating that I be cleared for tuberculosis before being released to the public. I was in between jobs at the time.
If it wasn't for the ability to apply for Medicaid on the spot/in the emergency room, that infection would've cost me roughly $60K due to my stay in the hospital and all of the antibiotics I had to be on for a month and a half, chest imaging, etc. It was a literal life saver on more than one level.

when we're "unhappy with our medicaid" it's because they cut out necessary dental, eye care, routine health screenings, behavioral health including help for addiction, etc. etc. etc. from being covered, meaning most of us are simply forced to go without. we're unhappy because in a lot of states and on the federal level conservatives and (conservatives calling themselves democrats) have completely gutted what was already overtly sub-standard care meant to shame you for being too poor to pay. we're unhappy with being treated as subhuman and knowing the government doesn't give a shit when we're in pain, when we suffer for years knowing the treatment we need but not being allowed to access it, when we die from things middle class+ people can just take care of. we're unhappy having to jump through hoops to find anyone that can help us, and those of us more in the know are unhappy because we know they have to PAY to be medicaid providers for the privilege of being treated like shit on their end as well. if you've never had to live on programs like this, particularly programs where something you need to survive is on the line (like your access to medicine or food), you really cannot imagine the effect this has on a person. we're unhappy with our medicaid because it's one of the ways you've taught us we aren't human beings worthy of dignity or respect.

Sucks that not one of the Senators apparently called him out for that. They even pay for an Uber to take me to and fro my doctor appointments! And if I have a surgery or procedure I need to have a caretaker with me for the ride home, I can get a free medical transport. Get this - if I am not mobile, I can get a free ambulance escort back and forth. All with just a phone call three days prior.
Yep, I was out of work a few years ago when I was first diagnosed with breast cancer, and my doctor's office just signed me immediately up for Medi-Cal, and everything was 100% covered. Lumpechtomies, lymphechtomies, chemo, radiation, the whole works. Eventually, when it came back, the Mastectomy and numerous reconstruction surgeries, too. Aaannd then when the chemo caused overnight end-stage glaucoma and severe eyesight loss, all that care is covered too.
I've gotten used to it, and obviously have been through more than my share of drama and misery on my own - but I definitely do still feel some guilt when I hear the stories of people working 3 jobs and losing their homes over medical greed. It's a ridiculous system.
I guess zero is just an impossible concept for a Kennedy?

I've been on Medicaid for years and it has greatly improved my life. It can be hard to find providers, but my GP is awesome, and I pay nothing for my meds, some of which would cost hundreds out of pocket. I would also have to pay hundreds per month to private health insurance just to fight with them if/when they denied a claim. As someone with ADHD, not having to do extra BS is priceless.
I stayed homeless for a year because I couldn't mathematically make enough to afford rent while staying under the income requirements, and work wouldn't have given me more hours anyway. It was better to live out of a broken down RV than to not have the meds that keep my chronic conditions under control.

Nobody ever mentions what happens to people who go to school and make a good living then become disabled at 34. We dont get free rides, energy assistance, snap or medicaid. I would have been better off having a drunk vehicle wreck when I was 16. So I was paying +$30,000 in taxes and Ive been living on from now less on less than $2000 a month for all these years. Out of that I pay premiums for healthcare, Rx coverage and I pay deductibles on everything. Great system. Lately, I had to go 100 miles in an ambulance and had no way home. Then I drive myself to surgery. If I had medicaid I would have a brand new chauffeur driven van picking me up and waiting for me. I had a glaucoma attack and I had to wait 4 weeks for surgery because my vehicle needed brakes. Now my eyesight is affected by the delay. I never should have gone to college and done all that engineering shit in AK.
