Very true. I'm a vet who was not stationed oversees. I have, however, traveled and worked in many other countries and did visit Army friends in Europe when I was active and also worked a permanent party assignment that was multi-branch, so I had the chance to speak to other military about their experiences overseas. My conclusion is that military stationed abroad fall into two types: the first is the member who actively explores the foreign culture and learns from it. The second is the type who stays on base or mostly frequents expat or military businesses off base. They just don't have any interest in learning a different way of seeing the world.
A strange andicote, I just recently learned- The Irish have been working so closely with the southern border of Lebanon, when a Lebonese solider speaks in English, they do so with an Irish accent. The majority of non-native English speakers learn English through the cultural domination of the US with Hollywood, English media and these days also English social media. I think it's the other way around - he's probably a lifelong Republican who believes in the values that they used to *claim* to hold (which on a surface level aren't actually unreasonable) and he's now struggling with the realisation that those supposed values were a superficial veneer over beliefs and policymaking that are materially harmful to most Americans. That's why he's open to the arguments they're making but so resistant to the idea of the Republican party as a concept being bad. IMHO a huge part of deprogramming in these instances should be to tackle the essentialist beliefs that underpin conservative attitudes. The guy literally came in with "I'm not racist I've served with other races before" - the core problem is that they think in terms of people being racist instead of actions being racist, they convince themselves they aren't racist because they're good people who mean well and racists are bad, and wind up completely blocking out the fact that well meaning people unintentionally do racist things and hold prejudiced beliefs constantly. I think if they can understand that criticism of racist actions isn't the same thing as completely excommunicating someone from society, they might realise why the anti racist push from progressives is so important and what we're actually trying to accomplish.

Theres this phenomenon I always see whenever I see a conservative debate someone on the left, where there appears to be this vast cacophony of talking points in their head, and they just want to throw them all at a "liberal" and see what happens. It's probably cathartic for them to get it all out of their system. But it results in wildly disconnected and irrelevant jumping from topic to topic, reason and rationale. I'm a veteran who was stationed at Fort Bliss, and everything that the caller said about El Paso was a blatant lie. During 2012-2014 El Paso was rated as the safest city in the country.

My conservative dad has a similar understanding as this guy, maybe a little more thoughtful and humane, but he believes the US should hoard these resources because they're finite. My dad just sees the world as 'us' versus 'them' because life is brutal, but I see it as us and them, and we can figure this out together.

There's legitimate criticisms that should be highlighted but that's with any government program. The goal is to not let the perfect be the any of the good. As mentioned undocumented are the best deal,in some sense unfairly so,as they pay in for everyone and every American citizen can benefit but the undocumented do not get benefits. We have 10 million jobs not filled with an available workforce just over our border that is the envy of many countries especially in Europe/GB etc. Unfortunately the skin color and culture aren't to the bigots liking. Sadly, listening to his responses, it doesn't sound like the viewer retained much of that education. You could even see it on Emma's face when his rebuttal would be way off-topic, and he'd jump from Republican talking point to Republican talking point without really digesting what Sam said.
So this caller is saying that he's surprised that people in any country he's been to have varying points of view. Maybe he needs to travel more to understand that you'll never find a country where 100% of the people agree on any issue. Not even in Vatican City, the smallest country in the world. He does something I've noticed people do when they have opinions that they know are potentially unsavory or controversial, where they only state a premise and hope you draw the same conclusion that they're implying. Its like if you don't outright contradict the conclusion then it's acceptable.

nah, he's got a point. We do have a problem with people offshoring their labor in order to pay cheaper wages elsewhere and avoid paying taxes and wages here. That's what killed a lot of manufacturing and is the main reason, through NAFTA and Clinton, that people in the midwest hate Democrats. A lot of towns here were destroyed by these industries leaving. But they don't seem to realize that immigrants arent the ones to get angry at over that. Nor are these other countries, who are not prospering from having to do that labor for cheap. And they don't realize that tariffs aren't going to make those companies come back. All it will do is give them an excuse to raise prices even more.

Realistically, you don't. Most of the population refuse to have discussions in good faith and prefer just feeding their own confirmation bias. Once you get to that point, the only solution is guns and severe crackdowns and reforms in education. Even after America won ww2, rebuilt Germany, and cracked down on nazi propaganda (to an extent) most of the older population still thought the nazis were in the right.
As the other replies have said, this isn't a conspiracy pilled QAnoner, this is a guy who means well but has been taken in by the right wing propaganda machine, probably Fix News in particular since that has a veneer of legitimacy by being on a major cable news network. His actual material priorities are all quite reasonable, he just doesn't understand the actual drivers for the problems he wants addressed and therefore has the wrong idea about how to address them. This is the reason that education has far reaching importance beyond mere preparation to enter the workforce - if media skepticism had been part of this guy's education growing up he may well have had progressive views even with all else being equal, but he doesn't know what he doesn't know, and now that he's being introduced to that you can practically hear the gears turning in his head as he's realising that the sources he's previously trusted are not as neutral as they claim to be.
As a former 2016 Trump voter myself, it took a lot of hard policy discussions to snap me out of my 20+ years worth of conditioning having had grown up in a Republican household

How can you talk about voodoo in a conversation about Haiti as if it’s a terrible cultural mark when Haitian voodoo is rooted in slavery, never forget that republican politics will point to the problem caused by bad policy, and blame the victims of said policy, but realistically Haitian voodoo was a cultural response to slavery, blending cultures and such to try and have a semblance of life in unthinkable conditions, and to wield a measure of power against anyone who would claim to own you, if you lived in those conditions and someone told you “here take this doll, it’ll scare the master for the night” of course you’d be interested. This is just like the crime narrative where over policing black communities leads to a higher proportion of black folks arrested and republicans will blame the victim yet again

Those of us without piles of disposable income who could still afford them would definitely take better care of them for starters. People forget how expensive home computers used to be and many still had them when they had less income. It wasn't an impulse buy and no one bought a new one every year. If they knew what they were doing they upgraded theirs and if they didn't they just adapted to using what they had as long as possible. We'd do the same with expensive phones. You'd buy one after carefully planning it, you'd take great care of it, and if a new one came out with fancy features you'd just adapt to using what you had to get what you needed done until you could afford the new one and not freak out that you were behind on tech.

My point was it wasn't all that long ago people were willing to part with $4k just for a home computer. And that was in the mid 80s when that $4k went a whole hell of a lot farther. The people that are into them would still get them and the average person would adjust to life without a cutting edge phone because our species has acted that way for most of its existence. The original poster expecting everyone to be unhappy if the newest iPhone made in the USA was that expensive isn't taking into account the history of people adjusting to these things. That was my point. And all the people I see constantly breaking their phones would take care better care of them if they were that much more expensive as well. We treat these things as disposable because our place in the world let's us act that way.

Very true. I'm a vet who was not stationed oversees. I have, however, traveled and worked in many other countries and did visit Army friends in Europe when I was active and also worked a permanent party assignment that was multi-branch, so I had the chance to speak to other military about their experiences overseas. My conclusion is that military stationed abroad fall into two types: the first is the member who actively explores the foreign culture and learns from it. The second is the type who stays on base or mostly frequents expat or military businesses off base. They just don't have any interest in learning a different way of seeing the world.

I think it's the other way around - he's probably a lifelong Republican who believes in the values that they used to *claim* to hold (which on a surface level aren't actually unreasonable) and he's now struggling with the realisation that those supposed values were a superficial veneer over beliefs and policymaking that are materially harmful to most Americans. That's why he's open to the arguments they're making but so resistant to the idea of the Republican party as a concept being bad.
IMHO a huge part of deprogramming in these instances should be to tackle the essentialist beliefs that underpin conservative attitudes. The guy literally came in with "I'm not racist I've served with other races before" - the core problem is that they think in terms of people being racist instead of actions being racist, they convince themselves they aren't racist because they're good people who mean well and racists are bad, and wind up completely blocking out the fact that well meaning people unintentionally do racist things and hold prejudiced beliefs constantly. I think if they can understand that criticism of racist actions isn't the same thing as completely excommunicating someone from society, they might realise why the anti racist push from progressives is so important and what we're actually trying to accomplish.

I've known several Haitian immigrants here in Las Vegas for over a decade now. They all drive nicer cars and have better-paying jobs than I. Haitians in Springfield specifically. This has been addressed by the governor, the police and the residents. So no, not all Haitians. The caller seems to be unaware that these communities(Latinos and Haitians) are largely Christian. That's no different than the religious demographics in places like Louisiana. My conservative dad has a similar understanding as this guy, maybe a little more thoughtful and humane, but he believes the US should hoard these resources because they're finite. My dad just sees the world as 'us' versus 'them' because life is brutal, but I see it as us and them, and we can figure this out together.

nah, he's got a point. We do have a problem with people offshoring their labor in order to pay cheaper wages elsewhere and avoid paying taxes and wages here. That's what killed a lot of manufacturing and is the main reason, through NAFTA and Clinton, that people in the midwest hate Democrats. A lot of towns here were destroyed by these industries leaving. But they don't seem to realize that immigrants arent the ones to get angry at over that. Nor are these other countries, who are not prospering from having to do that labor for cheap. And they don't realize that tariffs aren't going to make those companies come back. All it will do is give them an excuse to raise prices even more.

As the other replies have said, this isn't a conspiracy pilled QAnoner, this is a guy who means well but has been taken in by the right wing propaganda machine, probably Fix News in particular since that has a veneer of legitimacy by being on a major cable news network. His actual material priorities are all quite reasonable, he just doesn't understand the actual drivers for the problems he wants addressed and therefore has the wrong idea about how to address them. This is the reason that education has far reaching importance beyond mere preparation to enter the workforce - if media skepticism had been part of this guy's education growing up he may well have had progressive views even with all else being equal, but he doesn't know what he doesn't know, and now that he's being introduced to that you can practically hear the gears turning in his head as he's realising that the sources he's previously trusted are not as neutral as they claim to be.
As a former 2016 Trump voter myself, it took a lot of hard policy discussions to snap me out of my 20+ years worth of conditioning having had grown up in a Republican household

How can you talk about voodoo in a conversation about Haiti as if it’s a terrible cultural mark when Haitian voodoo is rooted in slavery, never forget that republican politics will point to the problem caused by bad policy, and blame the victims of said policy, but realistically Haitian voodoo was a cultural response to slavery, blending cultures and such to try and have a semblance of life in unthinkable conditions, and to wield a measure of power against anyone who would claim to own you, if you lived in those conditions and someone told you “here take this doll, it’ll scare the master for the night” of course you’d be interested. Those of us without piles of disposable income who could still afford them would definitely take better care of them for starters.
People forget how expensive home computers used to be and many still had them when they had less income. It wasn't an impulse buy and no one bought a new one every year. If they knew what they were doing they upgraded theirs and if they didn't they just adapted to using what they had as long as possible. We'd do the same with expensive phones. You'd buy one after carefully planning it, you'd take great care of it, and if a new one came out with fancy features you'd just adapt to using what you had to get what you needed done until you could afford the new one and not freak out that you were behind on tech.

My point was it wasn't all that long ago people were willing to part with $4k just for a home computer. And that was in the mid 80s when that $4k went a whole hell of a lot farther. The people that are into them would still get them and the average person would adjust to life without a cutting edge phone because our species has acted that way for most of its existence. The original poster expecting everyone to be unhappy if the newest iPhone made in the USA was that expensive isn't taking into account the history of people adjusting to these things. That was my point.
And all the people I see constantly breaking their phones would take care better care of them if they were that much more expensive as well. We treat these things as disposable because our place in the world let's us act that way.
