Ive had my 2008 XKR Portfolio coupe for 7 years now and I am absolutely thrilled with it. It has 45,000 kms (28,000 miles)on it with no issues at all. The 420hp 5.0 Litre engine seems to be perfefctly matched to the 6 speed transmission. Although it will occasionally spin the tires, it is easy to manage. An acquaintance of mine has the 510hp version in a 2014 model that he finds it is a little intimidating. Before buying my car I spoke with a number of owners and non-dealer specialty shops. Without exception they stated that maintenance costs of these cars are considerably less than that of Astons Martins or any of the German built luxury GT cars. If you can find a low mileage, well maintained example, buy it!!
I certainly agree w/your views and I'm glad to hear you've had an excellent ownership experience. During my research I found the same concerning maintenance costs. Fortunately, they made enough of them that good ones are still available. Thanks for sharing and enjoy!
hey sir how much do you know about the cost of ownership for these cars in MD? I do not see too many around so I always assumed they were incredibly unreliable or expensive? Do you know any owners and their experiences? Would this be comparable to a a5/S5 in ownership?
Ewiouh - while maintenance costs will vary, based on the car's condition, I would think it's comparable to an Audi S5. My recommendation would be to join the national Jaguar Club and a regional one too. Network w/them and be searching the classifieds. Very enjoyable review of a paricularly nice example of an early X150. However, I think the 5.0 with its extra 80 bhp takes the car to the next level in terms of performance, along with various other tweaks, and to the higher end of usable power on public roads. New performance cars simply have too much power for the road. Even the now relatively modest 500 bhp of the early supercharged 5.0 is too much. And, IMO FWIW, I think the supercharger ruins the experience. I love the way the F-Type looks, but it rides very differently. Again, its too hard for most public roads around the world...certainly for UK roads. I think the naturally-aspirated 5.0 is the sweet spot and is hard to beat, especially for the money. It is a shame, as noted in this review, that some of the plastics and switchgear aren't a bit better quality. If they were, it would be hard to justify paying the extra for an Aston Martin DB9, although, of course, the V12 engine is very nice indeed, and the last British n-a V12 we're likely to see. Still, the best Astons were the old-school V8s, and the n-a XK is arguably the most modern of that type of car we're likely to see. You certainly get a lot of car for half the price of a DB9. Thank you for this review. And it's probably worth noting the the new Jags seem to have re-introduced the style of gear-shifter used in the early X150. Maybe the later rising rotary shifter has longevity issues???
Nigel - thanks for commenting. I can understand the desire for the extra NA power and it certainly wouldn't go amiss. However, the 4.2 is a very smooth motor and enjoyable to rev out. I would absolutely agree that some cars and motorbikes have become so powerful the experience isn't as fun in the real world. Chris Harris and Harry Metcalfe were talking about this very subject on the Collecting Cars podcast here on YT.
Nigel, great comment, and it resonates with me as I am collecting an XK in two days, and after months of deep research I too reached the conclusion that the supercharged version was not worth the cost, nor would it likely improve my driving experience, especially as tearing around at high speed is of little interest to me. The F-Type, while beautiful is not my cup of tea. No doubt I will post again once I have had the car long enough to form a coherent, honest view of it.....
I've got a 2008 XK, had it from new.. so its a 4.2 and ample. I test drove a supercharged version and unless you're kicking it, you won't know the difference (because it was the same engine bar the supercharger). When you kick the supercharged version you hear the whine, and its quick.. but not so much quicker that it feels any different to the standard 4.2... my only thoughts at the time were vanity ones.. the XKr had twin exhausts, bonnet vents and the badge.. but did I want to pay the extra 5k (I think), for a car slightly stiffer and only faster under hard acceleration. A few years ago I had a 5.0 supercharged for a while. I have to admit it was rapid but again, unless you're kicking it you get the same buzz as the 4.2. So I still have the original XK and traded the Jag 5.0 for the Range Rover 5.0 Supercharged (same engine as the newer XK).. because what did I want with two XKs? Now I have the best of both worlds. Wouldn't buy an Aston for daily use.. they are superb cars but more highly strung than the Jag and spend more time in the garage. Great for weekend thrills but daily use kills them.
