      Are these more reliable than the old 4.0 v8 , I had one timing chain snapped on it , it had a load of other problems too
      I’ve been looking at these 4.2 and the newer 5.0 xk , they are beautiful looking cars

    What's the reliability like on these? Getting mixed answers from various places. What's your take?

      Hi. Thanks for watching!
      Engine and gearboxes are good. I have an XF with similar electronics and they can be temperamental. Interiors are hard wearing.
      Find one with a bulletproof service history and it should last if you service it well.
      And the looks are timeless.

      @@journeyofapetrolhead is the SK good for long distance driving. I drive daily 200km and I am looking for something cheap and sporty that can do the distance (currently driving bmw 535i 2010)

    I'm seriously considering trading in my 2006 SC430 for a 07-09 4.2 XKR convertible.
    Never thought I'd own an SC430, and it is a great vehicle, but I live in WV where I'm doing "spirited" driving in the mountains on almost a daily basis. The SC430 gets very sloppy when driven at anything over 10-20% above the posted limit.
    I think the xkr convertible could really fill that gap, and give me just the right amount of sportiness I'm missing, while still being a comfortable GT daily driver.

    • @journeyofapetrolhead
      @journeyofapetrolhead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Couldn't agree more - not a fan of the SC430 for exactly the reason you quoted (ie handling).
      Handling and brakes are the two things I really look for when testing something that is supposed to be "fast' ... different definitions of fast then dictate where my requirements level off.
      I'm a huge fan of the XKR in this guise - are you looking at the early one with the 4.2 or the later with the 5.0 powerplant?
      Thanks for watching!

      @@journeyofapetrolhead I'm considering the 4.2 xkr over the 5.0 xkr. The buy in is consideredably cheaper from what I can see on the market, and I'd rather aquire something that's had a bit more time to depreciate as well.
      From what I gather on the forums, the 4.2 powerplant seems to be a tad bit more reliable.

      @@journeyofapetrolhead I'm picking up 130hp at the wheels with a 4.2 xkr over my SC430. On top of being 100lbs less, and what seems to be, a superior transmission as well.
      So, all things considered, I think the 4.2 xkr is the right choice for me.

    • @journeyofapetrolhead
      @journeyofapetrolhead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that's what I'd buy too!

    Heard from a different TH-camr the xk has decently affordable quotes for younger drivers (I.e 21) and your reviews have pretty much narrowed down my choice between this and an accord type r. I understand the more expensive ownership costs over the accord but it’s nowhere near as bad as I thought and a comfortable price range. heavily leaning towards this, insurance price permitting at the time I finally decide to jump from a 1.0 to 4.2 haha. Great review 👍

      Welcome to Jaguar ownership. You’ll see from comments on my XF reviews that they are hard to replace 🏎🏎

      @@journeyofapetrolhead great to see you're still actively responding. I'm heavily considering buying a 2008 xkr , it has 100k miles but it's for a good price and the only one even relatively close to me. Do I have anything to worry about at that mileage? I wouldn't think so but it'd just a mild concern. My current car has 240k so it definitely pales in comparison to that but I've heard mixed things about jaguar reliability (most commonly heard anything post 2005 is good?). If I get it inspected before I buy, and the test drive goes well it should be all good right?

    • @journeyofapetrolhead
      @journeyofapetrolhead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would think so assuming it’s been serviced regularly!
      But, you never know. Buyer beware and all that.
      Best of luck 🤞

      Hi Alex, thanks for watching.
      That's the sort of tough choice I like ... dunno how I would choose between the SL350 and the XK. Suspect I might end up with the XK buy some SL's can be really nicely finished.

      Hi. Thanks for watching.
      Personally I'd go for the 4.2 engine as it has the J-gate instead of the rotary transmission dial. I have the rotary dial in my XF and am frustrated by lack of manual override there when turning a corner and the paddles have moved with the wheel.
      If you can find a 2008 XKR with the supercharger and, essential, a full proper service history, that's what I'd buy.

    I prefer the styling off the X 100 prior to this (I have an 03 XKR). That said, the view you are presenting here is stunning!.
