"Hah! The buffoon is flummoxed!" (I've heard that phrase A LOT during just one match) The OST for this DLC is quite interesting in the mood. Perhaps, that is me trying to dig too deep, but I keep thinking about it. The main game is all about the impending doom. It's a journey full of dread, horrors, stakes. If you don't succeed... the world is as good as over. But Butcher's Circus is different. From a certain position, there are no stakes. There is no impending doom. There is just a show, a bravado. So, for once, a semblance of happiness is allowed. And that tonal mix of still the same Darkest Dungeon dread, mixed in with some happiness and the uplifted mood is something truly magnificent! Nothing short, but the best from Stuart, as always!
This is exactly what I was thinking! The music is all grand and extravogant and has "happy" sounds in it, but there's still a strong overarching sense of dread through the wind instruments, strings and drums. Another absolute masterclass in thematic video game music.

I just realized I never left a comment on this song, which is astounding to me because this is one of my (if not THE) absolute favorite tracks of the entire OST. It's just so, so, SO good. Conveys so much emotion, the playfulness and mockery of the games, the very real and lethal combat within, the dichotomy between these two ideas and settings and how they clash when the fighting begins. It's terrifying and wonderful. Thank you for your music man. You're doing amazing work.

Hey Stuart, love the combat music, oddly enough the quiet parts are my favorite bits. Amazing that you made an almost 10 minute song not sound repetitive.
Unrelated to my dumbass joke, below: Can I just point out that even the points that are "repetitive" are almost like they're lulling you into a false sense of security - of knowing where the song is going to go - before coming back around and hitting you with some new hotness? If that isn't Darkest Dungeon to a T, then I don't know what is. And as a friend of mine has repeatedly stated, "This music was designed for what is essentially a _mini-game._ In any other game, this music would be considered the kind of song worthy of a final boss battle." In fact, that's fitting in it's own way - what is a more dangerous opponent to face, than another human being who has put in as many sleepless hours as you in mastering this game and its mechanics? Who else can strategize around your own party composition and react appropriately?
I really like the intensity changes when you get to the higher rank, you can hear more high intense part of music when you fight against higher rank match. like darkness intensity in single campaign.
In every other game there are tracks I absolutely love and "meh" ones. This is one and only case where every one of them is absolute blast and each piece brings something different to the picture. I knew I'd love it before even watching and boy oh boy was I right. Thank you for all your work!
That's a very kind comment. I strive to make no filler tracks. I go through many ideas in order to get to the finished idea. I think there were 4 or 5 other Combat ideas that I had drafted.
When your a newish player, youve beat the game and conqured all the bosses. But there is one boss left. Your Freind who has 500 plus hours in game and his team. *And now..the true test...*
I never thought I'd have ever heard Circus and medieval mixed into the same song This has to be my favourite track from the entire game along with the circus lobby. Something about it exudes a feeling of gleeful grimness which perfectly fits the tone and context of not only the DLC, but how it feels to play Darkest Dungeon as a whole You did an amazing job on this one
This game had been on my radar since Pathologic 2 went on a heavy sale several months ago, I had gotten Darkest Dungeon the day this dlc came out. Not only was I blown away by this amazing game I was also extremely surprised to see just how active this 4-year-old game is to this day, with a sequel coming to boot! Props to the whole Red Hook Studios team and Stuart Chatwood for the lovely experience of risk and dread.
Your music is GOD tier. Thank you for all your masterpieces. I even played prince of persia games when i was a teeny tiny kid and had no idea that it was you who had composed the both games' music for years! Youre simply amazing!!!
The best music composer in the gaming industry today, easily. Every single track on this OST is stellar. It has come to the point where anything new content wise in Darkest Dungeon has me excited to see what new atmospheric theme comes out to blow my mind first and the gameplay portion comes second.
I want to thank you, Stuart. Your music throughout Darkest Dungeon has deeply influenced me and work. It has helped me in my pursuit of my own passions and helped me a lot while creating my novel. It has helped to get in a mindset that encapsulate the moments of despair and woe in intrugal parts of the story. I can't wait to hear the new pieces you compose in the future.
1:12 and 6:00 has a stranglehold on why I love this ost. That RUSH of being alive, to fight on in this bloodsoaked sport fought by rabble and warriors alike, as if not just for entertainment or money, as it may to stand defiant against those of the crowd that wishes to see your corpse lifeless on the ground by defeating the enemy. Fight on, the crowd cheers for the underdog!
Man seriously how can you pull out masterpieces of your head that easy? I promess that atleast 60% of my hype for Darkest Dungeon 2 is to hear all the new songs you have composed.
Used this song as the 'big reveal' background tune in my recent D&D game; two years of real-world time had passed since the start of that overarching campaign, and Saturday night was the climax and the 'reveal' of the man behind the mask in terms of who the big villain was. The music made it SO indescribably cool, and seeing the players literally screaming with excitement was glorious.
Coming back to this, 1:12 is still fantastic. It evokes the sheer JUBILATION of being alive you'd get only by dancing on the knife's edge; a merry go round in a deranged deathmatch, at the Butcher's Circus.
Honestly the soundtrack and narration are the two things that bring me back to this game after a long break. It revives a sense of longing to return and challenge myself.
No matter how many times I hear this track it instills me with a mixture of despair, chaos, betrayal, and violence. I have played so many matches of the Butcher's Circus but every time I am relishing this music, really pulled out all the stops on this one Stuart. If DD2's music is even half as good as this, I'll be very happy.
I've been listening to all sorts of DD music while i am writing my DnD campaign. it really helps me come up with morbid and mad scenarios to put my players in... it really is great inspiration muhahaha. Thanks for the great soundtrack you make Mr. Chatwood!
I love how all of the people in the crowd have masks, but then there’s just this one lady who isn’t wearing anything to cover her face! Like, it takes guts to admit that you watch and enjoy a bloodsport like this!
I love the music despite never playing the dlc, since ya know it just came out on my work day and all I was just thinking how cool it would be if marvin seo's classes got in on this Just the thrall in the circus, looking around silently as it is just like it was in his slave life
Stuart Chatwood puts out another banger for the Darkest Dungeon soundtrack? I didn't expect anything different. Keep it up, the Darkest Dungeon is my favorite OST literally EVER.
This is practically the definition of old 1890’s esc circus music, but brutal and maniacal added to it. Not like circus music didn’t have those themes but still.
Listening to this while fighting in the game makes you feel the lore behind the dlc; people who don't know anything about each other kill each other in the arena in order to make some corrupt cowards entartainted which means you did an amazing job again but still dark mitochondria is my favorite it gives me the feeling of fighting in a hard situation, killing to survive without end
Once again, you have outdone yourself Stuart. The adrenaline rush you get during making decisions while this masterpiece plays in the background is undescribable. The fact that this is the last DLC for the first DD saddens me extremely, however it made me realize that so far there was not a single track in this game that I would not like. Seriously, the amount of time i spent listening to the OST during other things is overwhelming, I even remember that when there was this Spotify year summarise, you were the creator I have listened to the most. My words cannot express enough gratitude you deserve, but still, all I can do now, is to say *Thank you*
I've discovered this a while ago because some person made a remix of it (that I also like) and I must admit, I love that frenzy orchestral vibe it has. Especially at 4:55 when the drop comes in. I love it and I just can't help but say that this is a piece of art and definitely in the top 3 of my best 10 min long songs !

As atmospheric, oppressive and dreadful as you made the Darkest Dungeon soundtrack, nothing will compare to the raw, unadulterated horror that comes over me at 1:32 There is a sound in there that is _exactly_ identical to the sound of my mother's garage door, which just causes an instinctual sense of "Oh, shit, there's something I need to be doing right now". Anyway, great music, can't wait to hear what's in store in Darkest-er Dungeon.
The butcher has begun their slaughter There is no hope in this hell and many will fall in the face of chaos but in radiance may we find victory. Fucking awesome soundtrack my man just awesome 👏🏻
This is now probably one of my favourite tracks in Darkest Dungeon to be honest. It just feels quite different from the rest of the game and fits the atmosphere really well!
Thanks so much. It's always stressful releasing music to a game that has already been released and expectations are high. I'm glad you're liking the music.
@@StuartChatwood that's understandable, but honestly, the fact that the DLC music had a different feel to it helped a lot. talking especially about this and Color Of Madness. Now I'm really curious to see how it'll be like when Darkest Dungeon 2 comes out! Have more faith in your skills because every single track the game had to offer was great!
I started it and was like, “hmm, not as good as the other-“ then the intro ended and the main piece started playing and I was totally smacked in the face “-the other pieces have to catch up to this track now, holy crap”
What a great comment. I almost felt like I should tell people to give it a few listens first. For DD2 some of the piece might be more challenging so please give me a bit of patience. I find that the songs that take a few listens turn out to be my favourites. You crystallized my fears when I upload a new piece. "What if they hate it?" I'm always thinking that in my head. @@StuartChatwood personally speaking as soon as I heard the lobby music i thought that everyone was in for a good time. In terms of the combat music I enjoyed the hell out of it right out the gate. The music constantly spiraling down like the madness of the circus and the strings piano and accordion (I think I'm not great with instruments) all harmonising together was bliss for my ears. Absolutely brilliant work and one of the reasons i decided to buy the ancestral bundle over the weekend sale. I'm sure that the music in DD2 will be just as appreciated as that of the first.

The playfulness of it all was an underlying trait of the music.
@@StuartChatwood I can tell! It's great how it amplifies the cruelty and brutality of the games. Again, really good work!

@@wilsonhiggsbury8542 dd2's trailer
Fevered pitch of battle.
Darkest Dungeon OST and voice of narrator are reasons why I play it again and again. :-) I hope that Stuart is working on DD 2 too.
Hey Stuart, love the combat music, oddly enough the quiet parts are my favorite bits. Amazing that you made an almost 10 minute song not sound repetitive.
The quiet parts sell this piece. My favourite sections. Same motif in the lobby music.
The first seconds of the song, that build-up is just epic. That alone sells me this.
Really makes the fight feel like a spectacle and it encourages you to keep going when losing and makes you feel great about yourself when winning.
I really like the intensity changes when you get to the higher rank, you can hear more high intense part of music when you fight against higher rank match. like darkness intensity in single campaign.
Sorry but you misspelled his name, it is Stuart CHADwood
*And now..the true test...*
hold fast, or expire
I never thought I'd have ever heard Circus and medieval mixed into the same song
This has to be my favourite track from the entire game along with the circus lobby. Something about it exudes a feeling of gleeful grimness which perfectly fits the tone and context of not only the DLC, but how it feels to play Darkest Dungeon as a whole
You did an amazing job on this one
This game had been on my radar since Pathologic 2 went on a heavy sale several months ago, I had gotten Darkest Dungeon the day this dlc came out. Not only was I blown away by this amazing game I was also extremely surprised to see just how active this 4-year-old game is to this day, with a sequel coming to boot! Props to the whole Red Hook Studios team and Stuart Chatwood for the lovely experience of risk and dread.
pathologic and darkest dungeon are great games with similar themes : managing failures.

The circus where the clowns are volunteers, homicidal, and suicidal!
The show. Must. Go. On.
Great to hear!
_Chance is a fickle thing..._
Legend has it that all dismissed heroes must fight in the Butcher's Circus.
Well, my garbage occultist who got like 3 of my heroes killed deserves it
@@dislikessmoke1966 yeah sounds about right
So it's just the gulag.
I've been listening to all sorts of DD music while i am writing my DnD campaign. it really helps me come up with morbid and mad scenarios to put my players in... it really is great inspiration muhahaha. Thanks for the great soundtrack you make Mr. Chatwood!
Love that!
Someone did perform beyond their limits indeed.
I love how all of the people in the crowd have masks, but then there’s just this one lady who isn’t wearing anything to cover her face! Like, it takes guts to admit that you watch and enjoy a bloodsport like this!
This freaking song is the only reason I keep playing in the butchers circus since the infinite crashes
Imagine going to Circus with family and you suddently start hearing this
there should be a spectator mode for those pvp battles. That carnage with this soundtrack would be marvelous
So just a stream.
I love the music despite never playing the dlc, since ya know it just came out on my work day and all
I was just thinking how cool it would be if marvin seo's classes got in on this
Just the thrall in the circus, looking around silently as it is just like it was in his slave life
Ah the music of you trying to kill antiquarian for 20 turns in the row
Hopefully it wasn't too repetitive.
The music that is...
@@StuartChatwood, quite the contrary!
You could say, this music motivates you to seize the momentum and push on to the task's end.
Soundtrack for the 2020s...it's chilling how true to life and the state of the world this one is at the moment....
Honestly, words just fail me. The music so amazing! Truly, you’ve outdone yourself
Once again Stuart surprises me with another outstanding track. Thank you for your amazing work!
Thanks for listening
Stuart Chatwood puts out another banger for the Darkest Dungeon soundtrack?
I didn't expect anything different. Keep it up, the Darkest Dungeon is my favorite OST literally EVER.
This is just an amazing feat of work ,honestly his work is just so high quality .
This is practically the definition of old 1890’s esc circus music, but brutal and maniacal added to it. Not like circus music didn’t have those themes but still.
Listening to this while fighting in the game makes you feel the lore behind the dlc; people who don't know anything about each other kill each other in the arena in order to make some corrupt cowards entartainted
which means you did an amazing job again but still dark mitochondria is my favorite it gives me the feeling of fighting in a hard situation, killing to survive without end
Well, well, well, the music has me flummoxed.
Ah yes. The sound of buffoons being flummoxed.
Stuart, this is incredibile, seriously IT FITS PERFECTLY TO THE THEME, as usual I have to congratulate with you.
You are an awesome person!
If I had to describe your compositions in one sentence, it'd probably be --
*_"A brilliant confluence of skill and purpose!"_*
My words cannot express enough gratitude you deserve, but still, all I can do now, is to say *Thank you*
When Dismas and Reynauld settled their dispute with a nice bout in the circus and everything was just fine!
"It really makes you feel like a clown!" - IGN
I've discovered this a while ago because some person made a remix of it (that I also like) and I must admit, I love that frenzy orchestral vibe it has. Especially at 4:55 when the drop comes in. I love it and I just can't help but say that this is a piece of art and definitely in the top 3 of my best 10 min long songs !
remix? Sounds cool...
@@StuartChatwood here it is if you want it: th-cam.com/video/h_hJEzMPaAE/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=KristjanThomasHaaristo
Idk if we can call this a remix but it definitely is one to me
If you listen closely, you can hear old man screaming and 41 crit "ding"
It's not the same without the Man-At-Arms' bellowing every turn...
This track captures the magic and madness of the circus so well. It transports you there and you feel like you're one among the crowd. I come back here whenever I want to revisit that strange place.
EDIT:
Almost forgot. All Hail, Stuart Chatwood. One of the best composers of today.
I usually watch videos of Butchers Circus at 1.5 times speed, and the music gets INTENSE
As atmospheric, oppressive and dreadful as you made the Darkest Dungeon soundtrack, nothing will compare to the raw, unadulterated horror that comes over me at 1:32
There is a sound in there that is _exactly_ identical to the sound of my mother's garage door, which just causes an instinctual sense of "Oh, shit, there's something I need to be doing right now". Anyway, great music, can't wait to hear what's in store in Darkest-er Dungeon.
The butcher has begun their slaughter
There is no hope in this hell and many will fall in the face of chaos but in radiance may we find victory.
This is such a menacing and dark theme for what is seemingly a circus. Absolutely amazing song that captures the tone perfectly!
Instant favourite. Good work as always Stuart!
"Seize this momentum! Push on to the task's end!"
But after doing this for a number of years you have to trust yourself. If you like it yourself then trust that it will find an audience.
Stuart Chatwood, this music is amazing, it’s just hard to top Color Of madness okay? That stuff was/is/will be my favorite music in any video game
Yet again another great soundtrack, you make such a good game even better honestly, can't wait for the spotify !
"Hey, Stuart, we're going to make some free bonus DLC for our game, and we need additional soundtracks for it. No need to go too hard."
Stuart:
I can't get enough of this track! It's so GOOD! You somehow made something like a wicked waltz or fanfare. For real this is one of my favorite game tracks. It's amazing how you captured Darkest Dungeon's spirit and just flew with it. Bravo.
Glad you like it!
I have listened to this track for countless hours. You may think that is a tesitment to how much I love it, but really it's just I play a lot of Butcher's Circus. No, the real tesiment to how much I love it is the fact that I'm here listening to it again.
Thanks for listening

The foes are something you thought you know, the madness of the world is there, eternal as everything, but, the blood quickens, the crowd cheers... And this masterpiece sets all to battle against your comrades and fiends!
Perfection! All Things Must Come was stuck in my head for weeks back then and so will this masterpiece!
Glad you like it!
Without a doubt, the soundtrack for this game is one of the best I've ever heard. Me and my friends use these as combat music in our DnD campaign because they fit so well. Very well done, Mr. Chatwood. Can't wait to see what you have in store for Darkest Dungeon 2!
I'm just really glad that you guys ended up together and made this game. Every part and aspect of it is so well made and the game really shows that. You guys are very lucky to have each other.
I wish Red Hook all the best in it's future endeavours. I can't wait to see what darkest dungeon 2 is going to be like!
How does every track you make sound so goddamn good? Seriously, I have never seen this much consistency in music anywhere. You are a genius composer Stuart.
I think this is a result of working on a project that you love. I was enraptured by the artwork the moment Tyler showed it to me in 2013.
