How to lay decorative stones and bark

In this video I am adding some texture to the garden by laying some decorative stones and bark.
The decorative stones are blue slate 30-60mm in size and the bark is a medium chip.

I've got stones down atm but want to change it to bark, do I need to remove the stones them put down bark or couldi just put bark over the stones?

I dont see why you couldnt lay directly on stones. It might provide extra drainage. Over time if you are walking on the area you might end up with stones mixing with the bark. But i see no other reason not to lay on top

So I bought the stones and the bag said to wash them, I've just finished washing them and laying them out, to see many people haven't washed them prior to layoring...did I just waste my time?

Hi thanks for the comment. I didnt bother washing mine before i laid them. I laid them in the area i wanted and I think the rain will take most of the dirt away.
