Now THAT is how Beethoven's 7th should be played. I heard nuances I've never heard before, it's like hearing it for the first time. I love it when a conductor knows the score without the manuscript, his connection with the orchestra seems so much more intense and personal. I'm surprised the smoke alarms didn't go off during the IV movement... This orchestra was on fire.

What a wonderful performance from the orchestra and Maestro Honeck! Such clean and sharp orchestral execution yet so rhythmically thrilling when needed be. If you've seen the video of the legendary Carlos Kleiber conducting the Concertgebouw Orchestra in this work you'll find that Maestro Honeck's podium movements are sometimes inspired by Maestro Kleiber but his conception of this work is fresh and thoroughly thought out. Adding 4K video and superb recorded sound, we have a true Beethoven 7th for the ages!
Well that's as good a Beethoven 7 as I've ever heard. Honeck has a vision for both the detail and the complete architecture of the work. Great and committed playing all round.

Underrated Manfred Honeck's conducting here is outstanding and rivals that of his hero, Carlos Kleiber. Quite the tempo and irresistably propulsive. Kudos to the members of the HR-Orchester for their superb musicianship.

Probably one of the best ever Beethoven 7th rendering. The orchestra loved it too. I've heard Honeck for the first time. He captures Beethoven's spirit and narrative spot on imho. In classical performances I often feel that the rhythmic cohesion is lacking but Honeck is brilliant in that respect too. The Frankfurt Radio Symphony is a hugely talented orchestra. Just brilliant.

The last movement is like a celebration of Dionysos! A total contrast to the second movement. Maybe this is why this symphonie is so breathtaking. It embodies all of our human feelings. Thank you all for a wonderful interpretation!

I watched interview with Honeck. I wish we had more conductors like him ;so modest and so kind. Then we would see more people attending concert halls and so on,

Completed in 1812, Beethoven's Seventh Symphony is one of his most popular works. This piece was dedicated to Count Moritz von Fries, nobleman and patron of the arts. On the plan symphonic, Beethoven imbues each movement with a single, persistent rhythmic pattern, which he develops alongside melody and harmony through changes in duration, orchestration and texture. The bright second movement « Allegretto » which was encored when it was premiered in 1813, is in the darker key (A minor) which resembles a slow march. Structured in a double variation form, the music begins with the main melody played by the violas and cellos, which turns into an ostinato. This very simple motif of quarter notes and eighth notes is passed to the upper strings until the next theme is introduced by the upper string sections. The change in tonality is led by the clarinets, which play a quiet melody above the slightly restless triplets played by the violins below. The intricate string writing in this passage maintains the reader through the music. The movement is centered on a solemn processional rhythm. This rhythm at dark allure becomes the foundation for layers of new musical lines, the pressure of which eventually culminates in an enormous outpouring of emotion. Like the dance, a procession or cortege has a rhythm of its own and in this movement, the inexorable progression of its « long-short-short-long-long » rhythmic pattern can mirror the unstoppable march of time. All the subtlety of writing is here ! If all movement must end, then one can and must still move and live. Because of its context historical, Beethoven had great difficulty in composing this work, with its unprecedented energy in the history of music. This second movement is the only one to be interpreted independently of the symphony but also of all the work of the Master. *Lucien*

We are on the same wavelength my friend. To tell the truth, I am a unconditional of the German master. My favorite is La Pastorale because she is as carefree as flowers that sway by the wind. Sincerely 😘
Still it not only how the music was ment from the beginning, it is also how we use it. And in my ears there are two special beautiful and sorrowful movements in Beethovens symfonies, it is in the third, Eroica, and in this one, in the second movement. This theme, with its small fuga develompment has always made me in a mood of destiny, higher visions but also sorrow. It is a little hard to describe in english, as english is not my first language. I can very well think of it as a funeral march.

At least, since that man resonates artistically but there you have it, art is subject to man in its multiple conquests by war most often. So well that Beethoven found himself in the Napoleonic Wars. His hero the first Consul (Napoleon) whom he saw liberate peoples from tyranny of which the composer believed until Napoleon proclaimed himself Emperor of the French. It is evident that this had

Of course! It's obvious. He's even now adopted Carlos's patented sudden lean to the side as a rhythmic marker.

Hey, I noticed that the second movement ends up with a pizzicato passage from the violins, which few versions use (ususally they end up in a bow legato) and I would like to konw if this is the official version or a common variation. I personally love this ending to the 2nd, and I would love to know more about the one who made this change (if it is not in the original)
That final glorious crescendo in the first movement has the thrill of climbing and cresting a giant roller coaster hill. 12:20
I listen this Masterpiece every 3 years...this 12 December it's!! The day...apoteosic version...Bravo Maestro!!...in the 2026 I listen again...(I hope)
Klare und wunderschöne Aufführung dieser perfekt komponierten Sinfonie mit seidigen Tönen aller Streicher, milden Tönen aller Holzbläser und vor allem brillanten Tönen aller Blechbläser. Der zweite Satz klingt besonders schön und echt traurig. Im Kontrast klingt der dritte Satz echt lebhaft und auch rhythmisch. Endlich kommt der letzte Satz voller Bewegung und Begeisterung. Der intelligente und geniale Dirigent leitet das hoch funktionelle Orchester im relativ schnellen Tempo und mit möglichst effektiver Dynamik. Einfach wunderbar!
Dem kann ich nur zustimmen. Wunderbare Aufführung.

7:47 I love that I can clearly hear the 2nds and violas sawing away in the middle. Beethoven wastes nothing. If he wrote it, he wanted you to hear it, even if overshadowed by the 1st and winds line vs. the basses.

Es sieht aus wie Kleibers Dirigieren, aber Honecks kraftvolles und anmutiges Dirigieren kann nicht nachgeahmt werden.
4th mov is a bit too spirited imo. At the end of the day, when you have an allegro and presto in the same piece, the former should never surpass the latter in tempi.
With that being said, this performance as a whole is one of the best 7th i've heard in months.

Honeck is a Carlos Kleiber disciple. Therefore his imitator, the stick technique is all Carlos Kleiber. Gustavo Dudamel and Daniel Harding worshipped Claudio Abbado. They both hold and move the baton just like Abbado. Watch TH-cam videos of Kleiber and Abbado, observe that Honeck, Dudamel, and Harding are pale imitations of the original. Toscanini, Furtwangler, Walter, Klemperer, Karajan, Bernstein, Abbado, Mehta, Ozawa, Giulini, Kubelik, Solti were all originals not imitators. This is Kleiber’s 7th interpreted by Honeck.

Ich bin ja schon ein Freund davon Beethoven ernst zu nehmen und sich an seine Metronomangaben zu halten. Oft wird er zu langsam gespielt.
Das Finale hier ist mal ein seltener Fall von "zu schnell". Beethoven schreibt halbe 72. Das hier ist halbe 82.

It actually bears very little resemblance to Kleiber's recorded version.
@@davidalderson4980you are right, MH isn't a carbon copy of CK, just a poor copy. Take a look at the videos of CK from Concertgebouw in 83 and Tokyo in 86. So many of the gestures are identical or attempting to be.

@@davidalderson4980 Rana, Volodos and Grosvenor are as good as anything in the past. I haven't heard a lot of the young conductors, so I can't say. But this didn't strike me as top notch, and in the last movement it is really clear where his gestures are coming from. Sadly, they don't extract the same precision of playing. It's an opinion and we were still entitled to them when I last looked.
