Dusty refused to sing to segregated audiences. Also, During an evacuation they tried to get Dusty to leave the mostly Minority crew behind. She refused to leave until they brought a transport big enough to take her & the whole crew. Genuine Queen!!!
So glad you're giving Dusty some love. One of (if not THE) greatest British female singers of all time. The work 'icon' gets thrown around like confetti these days but she truly was an icon.
I am 60, and I don't believe I had heard her version before. I wasn't even sure how a woman would pull off the lyrics. WOW. That was 🔥! Damn, thanks for the schoolin', younguns!
Dusty Springfield, one of the greatest female voices ever! It's always crazy to me how she's singing so softly here but *still* has that rasp and distortion, that's so rare especially for a woman's voice.
The next Dusty Springfield songs - "The Look of Love" is a two martinis straight up with olives kind of song, as a nightcap after a particularly good date. Followed by "Just a Little Lovin" early in the morning, as the evening stretches into the day.
A&A, you love her "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" her #1 hit (1966) and “I Only Want to Be with You” her first hit (1963). These songs show her range and power!!!!
don't forget 'Sunny' . From a review...6/8 and always one Key higher ! it`s one of the hardest Songs to sing ever, and she sing it Live in Realtime !!!!! without Monitor, wthout Earmic !!! OMG it`s absolutely fantastic, hope this Time and female Singer like her will come Back !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Billy Gilmore was the bassist on the original Classic IV version and was later the bassist for Atlanta Rhythm Section, which explains perfectly why they did this song as well.
Not only should they cover Dionne Warwick's version, but they should look at the differing renderings of the same song from Issac Hayes, Average White Band, and Dianna Krall.
she was the british queen of blue-eyed soul but I didn't even know she had covered this great sixties classic. She truly makes it her own just like every song she ever recorded.⚛
Watch the video where she sings live on a 1972 television show the classic 1960’s love song “Since I Fell For You”, she completely obliterates anyone else’s version, and it’s a live vocal. It’s amazing that she was a smoker with that voice.
Little by little is a must…also in a minor key and the lyrics are cool.Dusty,s reputation of the white soul singer really becomes apparent here.1966 great year!
Check out Lulu, a Scottish singer/ actress who was a contemporary of Dusty. I think you guys will really dig "To Sir, With Love"; great song, amazing performance, and really cool production elements. Also, one of the best movie theme songs of all time!
Dusty had a gorgeous voice. Andy & Alex. You NEED to watch the cult movie "Harold and Maude". Cat Stevens soundtrack and a crazy ride. Monty Python and The Holy Grail is another great one ❤
"Harold and Maude" - one of my all-time favorite movies! Harold is so understated that you need to have the volume up - he has some great lines and someone I was watching it with missed some. Also don't research the movie before watching it - it'll take away from the story unfolding. You'll see what I mean if/when you watch it.
same last week i was in a,re ord store i waa looking at a new reissue of dusty in memphis i think spooky is on there article uncut few months ago about preacher man and the reissue jerry wexler the most pitch perfect singer i ever heard in a studio
The song was originally an instrumental and recorded that way. The lyrics were added by J.R. Cobb and Buddy Buie from Classics IV who then went on to form Atlanta Rhythm Section and did the song with them as well.
I watched a documentary on Dusty a few years ago that blew my mind. Dusty was an extremely shy introvert, a long-haired brunette with glasses who was considered cute and lived under her real name (The Springfields were a band with Dusty and her older brother), Mary O'Brian. She had massive stage fright and created the character, Dusty Springfield, losing the glasses, putting on a blonde wig and make-up and acting a role pretty much the opposite of who she was. Talk about bravery. It's a very difficult thing to face your fears but even more difficult to throw yourself into deep water head first while just learning how to swim. She was a true legend.
Every version of this song I've heard (Classics IV, ARS, Percy Sledge, and this one) has been excellent. And if you think this is sultry, you should hear Dusty's version of "The Look of Love." Just wow.
Thanks for finally hitting this sexy Dusty song, such a great cover! I'm going to echo another comment and call out Sandy Denny and "Who Knows Where the Time Goes": what an amazing voice. She was also the only guest vocalist on a Led Zeppelin LP ("Battle of Evermore"), because they loved her sound!
That's a great song. I didn't listen to early Fairport Convention at the time but I was introduced to Sandy's voice when I became a Richard Thompson fan later on. Another favorite of mine is "A Sailor's Life."
The biggest hit of this was the original in 67 by the Atlanta Georgia based group"Classics Four" About 8 years later 2 or 3 members of the Classics 4 left and formed a group called The Atlanta Rythem Section which had great successes with several hits including a remake of Spooky.
Dusty's version was released as a single worldwide in 1968 also, but not in the United States. Classics IV version went to #3 or #4 on Billboard back then. :)
I remember The Classics Four......their cover of this in 1967 was the version that charted. I had not known, until now, that Dusty also had a version. You've got to review her version of The Look of Love.
"The Look of Love" is the sexiest song I've ever heard. Also, the original version of "Spooky" was sung to a girl, and we know how "spooky" they can be.
Hope y'all do Dusty's "Wishin' & Hopin'", one of her biggest hits & just a fun, catchy pop song that everyone sang along with. And for her serious side, "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" and "The Look of Love"... heartbreaking, sultry, beautiful..just like Dusty herself. 🩵✨️🩵✨️🩵✨️🩵✨️🩵✨️🩵✨️🩵✨️🩵✨️🩵

Dusty was the best....please check out The Pet Shop Boys with Dusty from 1987. They admired Dusty so much and were trying to get her for one of their songs for a few years before they finally did it with "what Have I Done To Deserve This" She still has the voice, attitude and sexiness at close to 50 years old in this video. She died in 1999.
Yeah, good point about her energy. Picture listening to her in the 60s in a cool nightclub where everyone is elegantly dressed sipping martinis and manhattans. 🍸🍹

She could sing the phone book and it would sound great. She did a great version of "The Look of Love" you may want to check out.
Dusty gets my vote for all time sexiest female voice. The Look of Love takes the cake.
I just wrote that! Totally agree!
She was a no-nonsense chick too ... she once punched Elvis Costello in the nose when he disrespected her.
Totally!
The Look of Love should be next from her, hopefully sooner than two years from now.
Agree on top of being beautiful
