You seem like a lovely person, great video. I'm interested in the microfreak and this was exactly the video that made me press the buy button. Looking forward testing your patches!
oh and btw, you have any tips or if its possible to create lead sounds like this on the microfreak? It's from my favourite chip-music-band th-cam.com/video/BuB260Fv21U/w-d-xo.html
For that lead, its a square wave with slow pwm. On the NES there are only 4 states of PWM however a Commador 64 you can do pulse width modulation, check out SID chip music. you can use the triangle wave LFO or the CYC ENV to modulate it it in the matrix. also you can use the other mod source to add some slick vibrato or staccato, very chiptune sound.
Been messing around with a fantasy console called the TIC-80. A recent update introduced an idealized retro synthesizer complete with tracker and all. The triangle wave form creates a sort of low bitrate "harmonic hissing" sound when played on the lower octaves, and I've been on the hunt to try to recreate that sound for a while now but I can't figure out how to do it. Interestingly, your video starts with the exact sound I'm looking to recreate. What a coincidence lol. Any clue what that's called by chance, or where I should start looking?
I just call it the nes triangle wave. its uses the volume to draw out the triangle. But because it only has 16 levels its a very stepped triangle wave.
@@Aisjam I figured it out using phaseplant. Created a triangle generator and ran in through a bitcrusher. Set the bitrate to 1.19 khz and modulated it with note tracking.
Can you create chiptunes with the minilogue xd as well ? :) Loving your videos and I they help me figuring out wether to get minilogue xd,ju 06a or micro freak 🙈
Cheers Marc, I'll have to do more chip/synth videos, haven't done any tutorials from a nasty cold recently. I'll add it to the list though. Would that be your first synth?
@@marcdavis4412 Anything is possible with that machine :D. Have you made chiptunes in the past? They are pretty basic depending on the console. Check out the style of chiptune you want first. The minilogue xd will have awesome square waves with pwm and fm with the digital oscillator. Can't replicate that triangle wave which gets me down, and no sample functionality (unless you code an oscillator to do so). If I am going for that authentic chip sound (or fake) I tend to go to hardware first, but getting your first synth opens up a world of fun. The Monologue was my first "expansion" to LSDJ, Don't regret it at all.
@@Aisjam that sounds amazing ! I would love a polyphonic synths because the other style of music I like to create is more ambient and lush with lots of pads!
@@marcdavis4412 Well the Minilogue xd is really good at pads :). there is a 4 voice limit. But I usually record multiple Minilogue xd tracks to get more.
EXTREMELY useful, appreciate it man! saving 11:45 timestamp for later
Glad it helped!
This is some awesome and inspiring stuff ! There really is nothing the Microfreak can't make.
I know I’m late to the party, but Damn! What an informative video. Thank you.
Strive to make evergreen content. thank you :)
I absolutely love that LoZ Game Over Ending Theme. So catchy and beautiful. Nice work!
Thank you very much!

Cheers Oliver, the microfreak is a amazing little synth. It's one of my favorites to noodle on. Have fun with those patches.
This is very educational. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful
Awesome work on the patches, going to have fun playing with them!!
Cheers Mike, Hope you enjoy mucking around with them. Also thanks for your support :D.
@@Aisjam really like the sound of the Sqv12.5Juno preset, made me think of Shadowgate!
@@supersirlink Its one of my favorite games :). I had a lot of inspiration from my nes collection.
Thank you for this video :D
Learning quite a bit here :D
Great video, respect! Can you also tell me about other devices that can be used to make chiptune music?
Thank you. Deserves a million views
Cheers Lance.
This is such a wonderful and helpful video!
Glad it was helpful!
really helpful tutorial. can you post that 8bit microfreak jpg from the thumbnail lol
Amazing vid!! Subbed
Cheers buddy. I plan to do more chip tune related synth stuff here in the future.
So, you’re just using the microfreak as a sound module, yeah (that one thumbslide aside, lol)? 🙂

Cheers buddy, Hope you enjoy it. Also did you grab the patches on gumroad too?
@@Aisjam that had to be somebody else.
Anyone who uses the moon level from Duck Tales OST to show how a synth can shine deserves some applauses.
CLAP CLAP CLAP
Hahaha, Yeah i had fun making this video :).
