@@OrgaNik_Music umphhh... using your comment as a reply space, still this is my attempt to respond to all 4 responses under this comment thread... right off the bat, 😓🥲 will be completely honest and admit that i agree with what everyones said on here. i wouldn’t say I’m a huge T. National fan, but the songs i do dig from them....OMFG they’re absolutely amazing and incredible pieces of music. Will also bring up the point, well at least for me, that watching some of their songs being performed live absolutely adds another layer and kicks them up a level in regards to what makes their music epic... just watching the hammering of the guitar and drums being executed live during BloodBuzz Ohio always sucks me in and tricks me into believing there’s something special about this band... but in short if i can describe this band and perhaps their aimed fanbase i will use a similar joke that trended when Jay Z dropped his 4:44 album... he made a rap album for golf players... 😅 The National makes music for individuals with doctorates or medical degrees that love artsy tunes.... seriously 🤣 yet... it all sounds so similar
The National is a slow burning band; you may get into them, or you may not. And it does take some time to truly fall in one direction or the other. Their songs hit harder if you grew up with them too; each album has different focuses from dealing with young adulthood, work, relationships, broken relationships, family, and the shaky self of self that comes with age. Like the comment above me said, their live performances are the best way to get a feel for the soul of their music. Songs like “Bloodbuzz Ohio,” “The System Sleeps…,” “Graceless,” and “England” to name only a few just hit different. Overall, though, they’re a band to check out when you’re feeling contemplative and want something more chill playing. Bonus points if you have time to read some of the lyrics at the same time.
There is absolutely nothing like a stadium of people shouting "I CAN'T EXPLAIN IT, AHHH, ANY OTHER, ANY OTHER WAY" one of my favourite moments in life, period.
I think Mike lives in a lawn chair on top of my brain because whenever I start thinking about getting into a band, he always releases a DDD about them. I really appreciate it, Mike, but I’m going to need you to start paying rent.
I haven't listened to The National much so most of the songs referenced are new to me, but I was hit with instant recognition at 24:43 and couldn't place it until I remembered "I Need My Girl" was used in one of the most emotionally devastating moments of the Apple TV show "Shrinking" which is one of my favorite new shows of the past few years. Perfect song to soundtrack that scene, I'll have to check out the rest of their stuff
I saw The National at Boston Calling 2013, I was 11 years old but my dad brought me to the front row for the set and Matt jumped into the crowd on Terrible Love pretty much right on me, and that experience was what seriously got me into music and live shows.
I love aic to bits (though I haven't listened to any of they're post tripod albums aside from their mtv unplugged performance) and I would kill for an aic ddd
@@explodingegg123 ya AIC kinda died with Layne but I DEFINITELY recommend listen to “Black Gives Way To Blue” sure, it doesn’t have Layne but the entire album is a tribute to him and it is the best song writing found the the post-Layne era, and FRICKIN ELTON JOHN PLAYED PIANO ON THE TITLE TRACK!!!
Mr. MicTheSnare, just wanted to thank you for introducing me to so much new music over the last few years. It is actually insane to me how much you've been able to change how I genuinely enjoy music. In the crowded space of how music has been reviewed over the last decade or two, and definitely longer, your videos have made me look at music in a much less toxic lens. Genuinely, your videos, and especially Deep Discog Dive, have helped me appreciate music more than I ever have. Probably cringey, I don't care. Thank you.
Was not expecting a part of my fan made music video for "Exile Vilify" that I made for a Portal Music Video Contest in 2011 to jump scare me in a deep discog drive :V While I'm here, I always enjoy your deep discog dives not only because of your wonderful descriptions of the elements that you enjoy and not enjoy with each song in a given album but I also chuckle at your jokes sprinkled throughout. Thanks for the inclusion and look forward to your future deep discog dives. And now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna actually try and get into The National now that I think I have some room in my music heart for some melancholy midwestern dad songs.
I love this series so much. You've given me a much greater appreciation for listening to albums in their entirety and, as you put very well, mapping what changes and what stays the same over an artist's career. I even started taking a Music History class at my college in large part because of your channel and how much the topic interested me. Keep up the great work! :)
Will always have a soft spot for "Turtleneck," the first National song I ever encountered after it was featured in FX's Legion. Everyone say "thank you" to FX's Legion! Great video as always. Can't wait to check out the playlist and discover more from this band.
Something I love about watching the deep dive's is when you cover a band I love, but have fell behind on keeping up with, and I get to love them all over again
My favorite music TH-camr doing a video on my favorite band was a fantastic surprise! Also, I'm so happy you gave a shout out to "So Far So Fast", it is maybe my favorite song by them and I rarely see it talked about. The whole of "I Am Easy to Find" is so rich in textures and emotions and it is still my favorite album by them and I think it's really underrated. Other highlights like "Quiet Light", "Hairpin Turns", "Oblivions", "Where Is Her Head" and of course the title track are all just so powerful and so beautifully composed, I really do believe it is a very special album and I encourage anyone to listen or re-listen to it. I also really loved their recent two albums, and I feel very confident in that they are both going to stand the test of time. Anyway, this was a really great deep dive, thank you so much for doing it, amazing video as always!
What an incredible video. I'm surprised to see anyone go to bat for Sleep Well Beast and I very much appreciate it. High Violet is one of my favourite albums of all time and I got to see them live for the first time last month, and they blew me away even more than I already expected. I completely disregarded Laugh Track when it came out since I did not like Last Two Pages, but since the concert I have really been playing that album out and it's so much better than I gave it credit for. Smoke Detector is an absolute highlight. This video is so expertly crafted in both analysis and humour, very fun and cool. Great work!
Always been aware of The National, but never did a more thorough listen of their catalog. Started that process last week, so this was a welcome listen to get me up to speed. Thanks Mic!
Do you know for how long I’ve been craving a deep dive on the National? I’ve searched long for a mini documentary on the National. Even paid to watch the 2010 documentary. Thank you for this!
my main knowledge of this band is that one review that Fantano did of Frankenstein where it was just him sleeping the entire time. Which is one of the funniest ways to express boredom with an album
One of these days Mic will run out of bands and then I’ll get a Porcupine Tree Deep Discog Dive. One day. Great as always dude, our retrospective series on this band really gave me a renewed appreciation for them when I thought I couldn’t love them more, and then subsequently burnt myself out on them… and watching this makes me wanna listen to Sleep Well Beast like right now lmao
Smoke Detector legit blew me away the first time I heard it, one of the most electric and raw things they've ever recorded by far. I love the use of auto-tune in that track too, really sells the deranged rambling delivery of the lyrics. Surprised you didn't talk more about Space Invader too, hearing Matt's mumbling get buried in the mix while the climax builds and explodes around him for like three minutes straight is one of the highlight moments of their whole discography honestly.
Thank you so much for this series and especially this video. I’ve heard great things about The National for years but for whatever reason I never checked them out, and now I have so much great music to add to my favorites! And I’m so happy to get into them at this point in their discography because I am enjoying all the phases of their career and am loving their more recent and varied albums so much. It’s great to hear the diversity and excitement they seem to have making new soundscapes while keeping true to their sound. You have helped me dive into other artists too, and also rediscover artists that I have lost touch with and then realize I have been missing with your videos. Keep up the great work 🙏🏻
I just can't express how much Exile Vilify and it's Portal series context (together with the Lab Rat) mean to my heart... It's one of the most hauntingly beautiful pieces of art I have ever experienced
To this day, Conversation 16 is my favorite song I’ve ever heard. I credit the entirety of High Violet for shaping my music taste as a teenager, but that one track is just such perfection and started a deep love for this band that has never faded. So glad to see you talking about them.
I saw this video when I was quite sick. After this video I listened to a couple of their tracks and fell asleep. I then had fever dreams of Mic touring with them and collabing with Lil Uzi Vert, Beyonce and other artists I have forgotten. 10/10 video, can't wait for the tour dates
This video just came up in my feed and I'm glad it did (good timing, too as I'm seeing them play in Melbourne in three days) as it was like listening to myself talk to people about The National. So afterwards - based on things you like about The National and other artists you mention that I also appreciate - I went to see if you'd done a Discog dive into Andrew Bird , only to find none. If you're a fan of Andrew, I'd love to see your dive into his work (although it would be long). Anyway, just wanted to say that I love the vid and because us music nerds love to give backstory of our own musical discovery when no one has asked: I first came across The National from Dark Was the Night and got High Violet when it came out (so technically their first for me). I actually found that Trouble Will Find Me didn't grab me at first, but grew to be one of my favourites. Sleep Well Beast I (ironically) almost slept on, but have come to love it too. I'm Easy to Find was the first National album to grab me from the get go (weird, I know because I think your description of it was spot on) since High Violet. I love Matt's voice when coupled with female voices though so that probably was a factor. Frankenstein & Laugh Track are good albums and I enjoy them, but I certainly wouldn't offer them to someone as a starting point (although The Alcott is one of my top ten National songs)
Dude, you are releasing banger after banger DDDs. No notes. We have the same music taste, it’s just unreal. This band carried me through so much darkness and taught me how to express my emotions through song. I listened to them my entire high school run (2004-2008) and when I tell you I was so mad Macklemore stole Fake Empire from me 😂😂😂 god this wS a trip down memory lane!!! Thanks Mic!!!
I've loved The National ever since I first heard Bloodbuzz Ohio back in 2010. They really help when I have those sad dad blues that not even a trip to Lowe's can fix. And while I don't plan on getting married, Dark Side of the Gym is on the short list of songs I'd want to have my first wedding dance to.
Hearing “The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness” on the actual radio in 2017 was a subtle but important shifting in my consumption of music. I’d never heard anything like it before, and that mood it goes for is impeccable. One of the best the national songs for sure ❤
One of my favorite bands ever, but it took me awhile to get there. I didn’t know what to make of them but I felt like there was something there. Took about a year until I made a breakthrough and I was like “hey! This band is pretty good!” Took about another year before I made another breakthrough and I was like “oh my god! This band is amazing!”
“Nobody else will be There” from “Sleep Well Beast” features in the 2019 Academy winner Short Film “The Neighbor’s Window”. If anyone has the chance to watch it do it. It’s beautiful, through that song and short film I found about The National.
Dads, by law, are required to be a Foo Fighters fan or The National Fan. They give you a form to fill out at the hospital after the arrival of your first born
Shout out to portal 2, the game that actually got me into the national. When i found that radio playing their song i carried it with me in-game for as long as i could. It was just so beautiful i wanted to listen to it over and over and over again (and i did)
I feel like you covered everything in this review; extremely thorough and interesting! Actually you forgot about the song Lean. Anyway love this video ❤❤
I crossed the Atlantic to watch them at Primavera Barcelona too and was by the stage. It is lovely to watch a video that deeply encapsulates many of the same feelings I feel for them. Thank you!
I really want to become best friends with you after this video. Loved everything you brought and laughed at every joke or reference, this is a spectacular video on The National and YES Sleep Well Beast is their greatest record!!!!! I'd like to add that Eucalyptus is a banger tho and Laugh Track is the album I was kind of hoping for when they announced the ok-ish Frankenstein album. Cheers and congratulations on the great work man!!
'Lean' from the Hunger Games Catching Fire soundtrack will always be my favorite National song, those albums always had a who's who of early 2010s indie groups
This was my introduction to them and i remember being confused as to why I liked it so much when so many bangers shared the tracklist. That album was lightning in a bottle.
Okay, I thought I vaguely remembered them doing a Hunger Games soundtrack! I was kind of pissed about the Catching Fire soundtrack at the time cause I preferred the country/folk bent of the first one and Sia doing ‘Elastic Heart’ with The Weeknd doesn’t hit the same as The Carolina Chocolate Drops and The Civil Wars in terms of in universe atmosphere. Probably a bit short-sighted, but I was really into The Hunger Games at the time and can recognize how stacked that soundtrack was in retrospect.
Fuuny that you mention IAETF as a non-introductory National album: because it was my introduction to the band. I've been a fan of Mike Mills' film 20th Century Women for quite some time, and after the announcement and trailer for C'mon C'mon I was interested in checking out any more of his work, which sent me to the short film. Quiet Light' is far and away my favorite from the album, and I can hear the piano so distinctly in my head, much like Light Years. Thank you for the video. P.S: Ugh, I can't forget to talk about the strings on the outro for Quiet Light. Beautiful.
Hiiii! Your friendly neighborhood Claire here to chime in on all the love for this video because WOW. This is absolutely perfect. No notes. And sure, maybe I'm biased because this band has spent the past year burrowing deeper into my heart. But regardless, hearing you talk about a band you're so passionate about makes this video shine so bright, and I truly love that. Now buckle up because this is gonna be a longie 😅 First of all, how do we have the same favorite songs??? I Need My Girl was the first National song I fell in love with, but Apartment Story has recently taken the crown for my favorite song of theirs ever--partly for all the reasons you mentioned but also because of the ending refrain. As someone who's struggled with anxiety and seasonal depression for most of my life, it's truly comforting. Sometimes you just need someone to say we'll be alright, you know? This is going to sound so lame but genuinely, I didn't think to check The National out until I heard the opening of your original DDD almost exactly a year ago--so glad you expanded on that by the way, it's genuinely so endearing. And that plus a deep dive of my own into their past records inspired me to buy a ticket for one of their Chicago shows after only listening to them for like, a week. And let me tell you, I am SO glad I did. Even though I was up in the balcony and could barely see the band and barely knew the words to most of the setlist, I still walked out of there knowing it was the best show I had been to in years... possibly ever? And that is SO special. I can't thank you enough for pointing me (and so many others, I'm sure) in the direction of this band. I would love to pick your brain about all their music (and so much more), but for now I'll settle for watching this video on repeat. Because again. Perfect video is perfect. (And if it wasn't already obvious...I think I have a crush on you 😊) Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU ❤❤❤
Thanks for this video bc I've been slowly getting into The National's music both through the Taylor Swift pipeline and because my sister is a fan, but their discography is vast enough that I didn't quite know where to go next. I actually loved First Two Pages, as well as many of the more classic songs from past albums so I'm excited to go deeper!
I love when Mic releases a 40 minute video on a band I only know from getting 4s from the Melon Man and makes me remember his word is not actually law.
I'm NGL. I don't think I've ever had a matching opinion with fantano and he seems to be particularly harsh outside of a select few genres. The National are a highly respected/popular band and well worth people's attention
Day I Die, Rylan, and Don’t Swallow the Cap are some of my all time favourites. I only recently realized that Brian Devendorf is one of my all time favourite drummers
The National is one of those bands whose lyrics I relate to more and more every year as I get older, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. I love them now for different reasons than why I loved them as a teenager.
I Need My Girl was the first song I'd ever heard by them, and I only discovered the song a few years ago. I didn't even know they've been around for this long! I'm delighted to know that there's like...a 25 year old discography I can go through.
Would absolutely recommend that Sad Dads hoodie, very comfortable

England great song! Also, thank you for the english subtitles 🙏🏾👍🏾👍🏾🎂
I'm so glad you mentioned Exile Vilify. gorgeous gorgeous song. great video, pretty lights ddd please :)
Great video, hopefully one day you'll make a rolling stones DDD one day
Dude, you are releasing banger after banger DDDs.
I really respect the ability to evolve on opinions. I appreciate these videos.
I loved Return to the Moon by EL VY but I never realized it was Matt singing for some reason !
INTERPOL MENTIONED 🎉🎉🎉🎉
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS EPISODE FOREVER
I LOVE THIS BAND
One of my favorite bands ever, but it took me awhile to get there. I didn’t know what to make of them but I felt like there was something there. Took about a year until I made a breakthrough and I was like “hey! This band is pretty good!” Took about another year before I made another breakthrough and I was like “oh my god! This band is amazing!”
“Nobody else will be There” from “Sleep Well Beast” features in the 2019 Academy winner Short Film “The Neighbor’s Window”. If anyone has the chance to watch it do it. It’s beautiful, through that song and short film I found about The National.
Great group. My dad loves them
Dads, by law, are required to be a Foo Fighters fan or The National Fan. They give you a form to fill out at the hospital after the arrival of your first born
Shout out to portal 2, the game that actually got me into the national. When i found that radio playing their song i carried it with me in-game for as long as i could. It was just so beautiful i wanted to listen to it over and over and over again (and i did)
You deserve more appreciation for these! So good and detailed oriented--you can tell you put a lot of work into these.
A Wilco deep discog dive would be amazing.
I feel like you covered everything in this review; extremely thorough and interesting! Actually you forgot about the song Lean. Anyway love this video ❤❤
4:25 Kingdom Hearts jumpscare
The band of a generation. Very rare to see a discography where every album is above average and at least four albums are genuinely classic.
you have no idea how excited i was to see this on my youtube front page
i love your deep dive videos so much. thanks for the hard work you do
I have been waiting for this for so fucking long I love it
I crossed the Atlantic to watch them at Primavera Barcelona too and was by the stage. It is lovely to watch a video that deeply encapsulates many of the same feelings I feel for them. Thank you!
Love your work. I started listening to The National several deep dives ago because of you. This closed the loop; thanks!
I was waiting for this moment!!!!
Love The National so much. Great retrospective!
Sleep Well Beast truly IS the best National album!
Nicholas - this is one of your best yet, I’m going to go listen to all of these albums right now and become the saddest dad (I have no children).
@@lad9732 right?! That and the Twilght albums had zero right to be that good, Angus & Julia Stone, Sea Wolf, POP ETC, like wtf how?!
That album introduced me to them and so many other artists that shaped my teenage years.
Been waiting for this one for so long, finally!
IVE BEEN SO EXCITED FOR THIS DEEP DIVE!!!!!!
England and Bloodbuzz Ohio got me through some rough times in my senior year of high school. Fantastic album.
Beautiful.
This is my favorite band and you're my favorite youtuber I love your work so much thank you thank you
AHHH YOU DID THE NATIONAL FINALLY
He actually already did it( it was the first DDD),this is just a remake.
The edit was top tier
I saw them this week! They’re touring Australia with Fleet Foxes. Fantastic show as ever.
Now buckle up because this is gonna be a longie 😅
First of all, how do we have the same favorite songs???
(And if it wasn't already obvious...I think I have a crush on you 😊) Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU ❤❤❤
Wake up, babe! New DDD
Finally someone talking about their early material!
Day I Die, Rylan, and Don’t Swallow the Cap are some of my all time favourites. I only recently realized that Brian Devendorf is one of my all time favourite drummers
I think you already know you gotta do Interpol next...
The National is one of those bands whose lyrics I relate to more and more every year as I get older, and I'm not sure how I feel about that. I love them now for different reasons than why I loved them as a teenager.
Great content as always.
i didn't even know that "Exile Vilify" was in Portal 2. i first heard in in a TF2 SFM video
Would love to see one of these on Failure! Love this series!
To this day I choose to believe that Matt Berninger high-fived himself after writing "When I walk into a room, I do not light it up... Fuck."
Man, I love love The National, but I have to listen to it carefully, it always gets me down, it really touches my heart.
I Need My Girl was the first song I'd ever heard by them, and I only discovered the song a few years ago. I didn't even know they've been around for this long! I'm delighted to know that there's like...a 25 year old discography I can go through.
The National!!!
Also, Interpol DDD when?
