  • Last week, I headed up to the Howgill Fells with my little sister, Amira. As I mention in the video, I was invited to stay at a B&B called Brownber Hall through my website Ramble Guides, to include it in my Yorkshire Dales Guide. The B&B was SO nice, and we had an amazing stay there. We headed out walking at sunrise, sunset, and all day in the fells - so lots of walking! I absolutely loved this part of the Dales and felt it was a bit of a hidden gem; somewhere I hope to explore more of in the future. Do go check out the places we visited in this video in my guide here: ramble-guides.....
    Thanks for watching!

Lovely part of the world. Also usually fairly quiet as most folks go to the lakes. I've ridden my horse around that area quite a lot in the past. Good country for horse trekking. In fact, my picture is taken with Cautley Spout in the background.

Hi Athena. I know The Howgills very well. We had a farm house in Newbiggin on Lune not far from the old railway station. I used to wander The Howgills every day with my Collie Jack. It’s a very quiet area all year. Navigation can be tricky in bad weather. Years ago we used to winter climb on Cautley Spout. I don’t think it’s been frozen since 2010/2011. Good place to Mountain Bike as well and Kirkby Stephen Railway Station on The Settle and Carlisle isn’t too far away. Great place to live with good access to The Lakes, Dale’s & Pennines.

You should check out Uldale more on the W - there's the most adorable herd of cows lives there! I camped there going S a few years, then just this October left my wife at Garsdale to go home on the train and hiked over Baugh Fell, down to Cross Keys, camped by Cautley Spout then back to Uldale in the opposite direction to visit my friends the cows again! I love the Howgills, they were also Wainwright's favourite area I believe - but seem to be invariably gale-force winds on the top!

As you said in your video you need to have a good sense of direction when out walking in the hills, because most of those small indistinct paths are not shown on maps . They are not really paths but are in fact sheep trods (paths made by sheep).

I once signed up to a photography course that was taught by a professional photographer. He told us he had a friend who was a chef, and he agreed to photograph his friend's new restaurant for promotional reasons in exchange for a three course meal. Two friends scratching each other's backs. The chef was impressed by the photos, flicking through them while his friend tucked into his meal: "Wow, these are great. You must have a really good camera?". The photographer looked up and calmly said to his friend "This food is delicious. You must have a really good oven?". I'll just leave this here 🙂

Sorry to be pedantic but the Howgills are not the Yorkshire Dales. Technically some parts may be in the Yorkshire National Park, but that's different to the Yorkshire Dales, the Howgills are firmly rooted in Cumbria.
Really enjoyed the film, but as a local it did spike every time you said Yorkshire as you were in Cumbria specifically the Westmorland Dales.
Haha just saved yourself ..........11 minutes in.

No your correct it is the Yorkshire Dales National Park, but that comprised of the Yorkshire Dales and Westmoreland Dales etc in the grand scheme of things it's not that important, bit the Yorkshire Dales and the Yorkshire dales National Park are not the same thing
I soon discovered this in Orton, just up the road from the Howgills where the signs were painted over until they were changed from: YORKSHIRE DALES NATIONAL PARK Westmoreland Dales, to WESTMORELAND DALES, Yorkshire dales National park. The difference is obviously quite sharp for the people who live there.
And ivuess peoe referring to the Westmoreland Dales as the Yorkshire is irritating. Yorkshire Dales is aveographic region, the national Park an administrative one. It's really not that important and 99.9% of people couldn't care less. But locally it an be an issue.
Sorry for being such a pedantic tw*t but over lockdown etc I've watched a lot of TH-cam videos, mostly coast-coast where they refer to the area of the Westmoreland Dales as the Yorkshire Dales and after a whileit grates
I did e joy the little film and will be heading through the Howgills to Sedbergh (in the car lol) in about 15 mins
      Dales
