Marvin Hagler vs Juan Domingo Roldan 30.3.1984 - WBC, WBA & IBF World Middleweight Championships

  • Hagler defends his Undisputed Middleweight Championship of the World against the Middleweight Champion of Argentina, the dangerous Juan Domingo Roldan. Sugar Ray Leonard would be assisting the commentary. More info below...
    Marvin Hagler's record was 58-2-2 coming in and held the WBC, WBA and IBF World Middleweight belts. In his last fight he claimed a 15 round unanimous decision over Roberto Duran, a fight in which he was criticized for not being able to knock Duran out. That minor criticism aside, Hagler was recognized in every boxing circle as the King of the Middleweight division and had been since the late 1970's.
    Juan Domingo Roldan's record was very similar to Haglers at 52-2-2. He had been Middleweight Champion of Argentina since 1981 and had successfully defended his title 4 times, winning all of those defenses by KO. In 1982 he also won the South American Middleweight title. Roldan was considered a dangerous fighter because of his unorthodox style and heavy hands. His last loss was back in 1982 by DQ against Ricardo Arce, a loss he would avenge just 2 months later. Roldan had fought a lot of people however most were not known outside of South America, and he had only fought outside of his native Argentina four times in 56 fights.
    In the opening seconds of the first round, Hagler went down after Roldan caught him with a glancing left hook on the back of the head. Hagler felt he had a slipped, but the ref disagreed and awarded a knockdown to Roldan. This would be the only official knockdown of Hagler's entire career. In round 3, Hagler hurt Roldan with an uppercut to the eye causing it to swell shut almost immediately, Hagler saw his opening and pounced sending his opponent sprawling into the ropes for a knockdown of his own. Roldan would keep coming forwards for the rest of the fight but with a badly swollen eye he was struggling to see the punches coming. As early as round 8 Roldan had been telling his corner that he wanted to quit but for whatever reason they continually pushed him back out to continue. In round 10, Roldan finally succumbed to Haglers onslaught and went down. He got to his feet before the 10 count but he told the ref he didn't want to continue. Roldan had given it his best, but being unable to see the punches coming from somebody who could hit with power and accuracy like Hagler, was just too dangerous. The crowd was initially upset Roldan had quit but when you watch the fight back, he made the right decision.
    Juan Domingo Roldan had one more fight in 1984 and then retired from the ring... For 18 months. Like many fighters before and since, he just couldn't stay out of the ring. He returned to the ring in 1986 and racked up 12 wins in a row, including a TKO win against the durable James Kinchen. In 1987 he got a shot at the vacant WBC Middleweight title but lost to Thomas Hearns. The following year he took on Michael Nunn for the IBF Middleweight belt but came up short again. After 3 failed attempts at world titles Roldan finally retired for good with a final record of 67-5-2.
    Hagler would continue boxing until 1987 when he lost a controversial decision to Sugar Ray Leonard. However when Hagler retired, he stayed retired. He had become so disenchanted with boxing and being "cheated" that he vowed never to step back into the ring...

    Shocking to learn that Hagler is not among us anymore. But just found out that Juan Domingo Roldan has died also, just four months ago. Maybe he didn't have it in him to be a world champion but he sure could make a champion's life miserable. May they rest in peace!

    His eye was damaged because hit was hit by Hagler. He was hit and cut just below the eye. There was no thumb BS. Any way that would not be an excuse for pros. I think that the coverage was bias and Ray should have known better. When Ray made Duran quit they said the same thing. "Why did Duran quit?" They made every excuse except to admit reality. This is a good example of the bias Hagler faced throughout his career. There was no thumb. It was s good shot and the guys eye went south. Then through the rest of the fight is was poor Roldan and how he was taking it to Hagler. Roldan hit Hagler with everything but yet Hagler was never hurt. You see any damage on Hagler's face? Nada. Hagler just kept coming. Roldan was just throwing wildly but yet the announcers we in his corner. Again, no matter what Hagler did, he never got the respect he deserved and this fight shows how he constantly had the uphill battle with the talking heads. Realistically, Hagler beat this guy up and all they want to talk about is a phantom thumb to the eye.

      I agree hagler took some really clean shot but a lot of shots he rolled with and caught on the gloves. Commentators never gave him credit for the boxer he was. The proof is he’s talks perfectly fine today. Proof he didn’t take a lot punishment.

    Boxing has lost a monumental pugilist and imo in his prime the ‘Baddest man on the Planet’
    No matter what Tyson fanboys say.
    This man epitomised everything the word ‘dedication’ to a sport means.
    He was and still is the fighter that inspired me to be the best version of me in any sport I tried.
    He’s the reason I Started Boxing as a callow youth and to this day admire the commitment it takes to succeed.
    He walked away owing the sport nothing and never unlike many others came back for a payday knowing he’d be cheating the public.

    Ask John "The Beast" Mugabi how hard Marvin Hagler could punch? Up until he fought Hagler, Mugabi had been a wrecking machine, destroying everybody and everything in his path. And for a long time in their fight he gave Hagler all he wanted too. But Mugabi had never faced anyone with an iron chin that could take a punch like Hagler could. Once Hagler timed Mugabi and started slipping his power shots and throwing his own back, he not only put him down and out, but rumor has it that Mugabi lost heart for the sport and was never the same fighter again in the ring that he'd been prior to fighting Hagler.

    The "knockdown" wasn't even a glancing blow. It sailed over the top of Hagler's head, grazing the back of his neck with little force, and Hagler slipped as he ducked the shot. Not arguable. Hagler was seldom bothered by a punch, only being visibly rattled, but never in trouble, against Hearns and Mugabi, two of the hardest punchers in history. This fight was the second one (Duran being the first), in which Marvin's reflexes were visibly slower, and in which he began to take too much punishment. After 60+fights, that's not a surprise. Still one of the top three middleweights of all time.

    • @SKa-tt9nm
      @SKa-tt9nm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marvelous was in serious trouble against Tommy Hearns. That’s why the fight ended in 3. If Tommy survived the onslaught, they would have almost certainly ended the fight on cuts and given the hitman the belt.

    • @danielsapenpsychologistph.1142
      @danielsapenpsychologistph.1142 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SKa-tt9nm It was bad news for both of them. Marvin came out to destroy him and never let him get set from the bell before the cut. You’re right, they wouldn’t have allowed the fate to go much longer with the cut the way it was. But Hearns also had a broken hand by that point, and Hagler was systematically breaking him down by the third round, Tommy was rattled and exhausted, and Marvin bleeding badly, But only getting stronger otherwise. Combination is things made it such a friggin epic fight. Tremendous warriors, that fight added to Marvin’s reputation, but it didn’t hurt Tommy’s

    To measure Hagler's impact, just know that Roldan too could have been champ, along with the rest of the middle weight contenders of the 70s, and early 80s, Hearns, Mugabe, Minter would have lasted longer if M.H, had not been there, the list goes on, there were some though people in the middle weight, Vito Antuofermo his corner had to tell him he got hit he didn't know he only saw forward, those were the days my friend, then you had F. Samford, George J. Archie's Bunker.

      In them days fights were a lot harder and 'less pay' too compared to now's silly money . All hats off to to Roldan also . Argentinians are a tough breed and never a push over . Hagler ruled for 7 years as the undisputed middle weight champion . From 1980 to 1987 . A long reign indeed . Always at war inside the ring, no scandals followed him outside the ring in fact a perfect gent . a no nonsense guy and always in tip top shape . I saw an interesting interview with Hagler in 2014 and he still looked in tip top shape and no belly. I was so shocked at his sudden death at age 66!
